Development of a scoring system for the early diagnosis of equine neonatal sepsis.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 1 18-22 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01445.x
Brewer BD, Koterba AM.A sepsis scoring system was developed and tested prospectively in a blind study of 190 neonatal foals admitted to the University of Florida Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit. The system used 14 readily available historical, clinical or laboratory variables and weighted each item to arrive at a sepsis score. The score was found to have a sensitivity of 93 per cent, a specificity of 86 per cent, positive accuracy rate of 89 per cent and negative accuracy rate of 92 per cent. The sepsis score was far more sensitive and specific for infection, even in very early c...

Standardbred stallion gene transmission for twelve protein systems: evidence for selection in trotters.
Animal genetics    January 1, 1988   Volume 19, Issue 4 317-330 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2052.1988.tb00823.x
Weitkamp LR, MacCluer JW, Guttormsen SA, King RH.The transmission ratios of alleles at 12 protein marker loci were computed individually for American Standardbred stallions in a genealogy of 5392 phenotyped horses. Over all loci there was significant gene transmission distortion for trotting stallions (p = 0.0019) but not for pacing stallions (p = 0.99). The transmission distortion was due to sire-specific effects (p = 0.0024) and not to increased transmission of one or the other allele of a given heterozygous genotype (p = 0.21). Individual-specific, non-random transmission of homologous chromosomes may provide a mechanism for selection to ...
Exploratory celiotomy for suspected urinary tract disruption in neonatal foals: a review of 18 cases.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 1 13-17 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01443.x
Adams R, Koterba AM, Cudd TC, Baker WA.The medical records of 18 neonatal foals, in which exploratory celiotomies were performed for suspected urinary tract lesions, were reviewed. Despite clinical signs and laboratory values indicative of disruption of the urinary tract, three foals did not have a site of urinary tract leakage at surgery. Eight foals had ruptured bladders and seven foals had urachal lesions. Ultrasonography was used as a pre-operative diagnostic procedure in eight foals to evaluate the presence of free peritoneal fluid and urinary tract integrity. Nine foals were alive six months after discharge. Seven of the nine...
Pulmonary mechanics during treadmill exercise in race ponies.
Veterinary research communications    January 1, 1988   Volume 12, Issue 2-3 245-258 doi: 10.1007/BF00362807
Art T, Lekeux P.Exercise-induced variations in their ventilatory mechanics were studied in 8 healthy ponies 4.2 +/- 1.4 years old and weighing 282 +/- 11 kg. Airflow (V), tidal volume (VT), esophageal pressure, mask pressure and electrocardiogram were simultaneously recorded before, during and after a treadmill (incline 8.3 degrees) exercise which consisted of 2 min walking (1.5 m.sec-1), 3 min slow trotting (3.0 m.sec-1) and 3 min fast trotting (3.5 m.sec-1). The results of three consecutive daily measurements were averaged for each pony. Heart rate, minute volume (Ve), respiratory frequency (f) and peak ins...
T lymphocyte development and maturation in horses.
Animal genetics    January 1, 1988   Volume 19, Issue 4 343-348 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2052.1988.tb00825.x
Perryman LE, Wyatt CR, Magnuson NS, Mason PH.Monoclonal antibodies specific for equine T lymphocyte subpopulations were produced and procedures for the continuous culture of equine lymphocytes were developed. These reagents and procedures were used to analyse the appearance, maturation and functions of T lymphocytes in normal horses and in T lymphocyte deficient horses with severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). T lymphocytes appeared as early as the 75th day of fetal development and were normally distributed prior to birth of normal foals. Analysis of thymic T lymphocyte differentiation in SCID foals revealed the presence of both prot...
Platelet activating factor as a mediator of equine cell locomotion.
Veterinary research communications    January 1, 1988   Volume 12, Issue 2-3 101-107 doi: 10.1007/BF00362788
Dawson J, Lees P, Sedgwick AD.Equine polymorphonuclear (PMN) and mononuclear (MN) leucocytes were separated on Percoll gradients and used to study the chemoattractant properties of the polar ether-linked phospholipid, platelet activating factor (PAF). Six concentrations of PAF ranging from 1 ng/ml to 100 micrograms/ml were studied in each of two in vitro assay systems, the agarose microdroplet and a microfilter technique. Very significant (p less than 0.01) increases in the movement of both PMN and MN cells were obtained with most concentrations of PAF. In two instances there was no apparent concentration-response relation...

Breathing strategy of the adult horse (Equus caballus) at rest.
Journal of applied physiology (Bethesda, Md. : 1985)    January 1, 1988   Volume 64, Issue 1 337-346 doi: 10.1152/jappl.1988.64.1.337
Koterba AM, Kosch PC, Beech J, Whitlock T.To investigate the mechanism underlying the polyphasic airflow pattern of the equine species, we recorded airflow, tidal volum, rib cage and abdominal motion, and the sequence of activation of the diaphragm, intercostal, and abdominal muscles during quiet breathing in nine adult horses standing at rest. In addition, esophageal, abdominal, and transdiaphragmatic pressures were simultaneously recorded using balloon-tipped catheters. Analysis of tidal flow-volume loops showed that, unlike humans, the horse at rest breathes around, rather than from, the relaxed volume of the respiratory system (Vr...
Association of arytenoid chondritis with equine lymphocyte antigens but no association with laryngeal hemiplegia, umbilical hernias and cryptorchidism.
Animal genetics    January 1, 1988   Volume 19, Issue 4 427-433 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2052.1988.tb00834.x
McClure JJ, Koch C, Powell M, McClure JR.Associations were sought between ELA A1-A10 and W11 antigens and the presence of laryngeal hemiplegia, arytenoid chondritis, umbilical hernias and cryptorchidism in Thoroughbreds and/or Quarter Horses. No significant associations were detected between laryngeal hemiplegia and any ELA antigen in Thoroughbreds. The association between arytenoid chondritis and A9 was significant with a relative risk (RR) of 15.6 and aetiologic fraction (EF) of 0.80 in Thoroughbreds. There were apparent associations based on RR between A4 and A5 in Quarter Horses with umbilical hernias (RR = 7.5 and 6.1 respective...
Novel alpha haemoglobin haplotypes in horses.
Animal genetics    January 1, 1988   Volume 19, Issue 2 87-101 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2052.1988.tb00795.x
Bowling AT, Scott AM, Flint J, Clegg JB.Four minor haplotypes that produce abnormal haemoglobin phenotypes in horses have been characterized. Two of them, AIIb and V, are copy number variants with, respectively, one and three alpha genes instead of the normal complement of two. The AIIa and C haplotypes, on the other hand, each have two alpha genes but, as a result of probable gene conversions, they now encode identical, though haplotype specific, globins. Two out of 60 unrelated and phenotypically normal horses studied had an unusual triplicated rearrangement in the embryonic zeta-gene locus. Each of these variants appears to have ...
Exploratory celiotomy for gastrointestinal disease in neonatal foals: a review of 20 cases.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1988   Volume 20, Issue 1 9-12 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1988.tb01442.x
Adams R, Koterba AM, Brown MP, Cudd TC, Baker WA.The medical records of 20 neonatal foals in which exploratory celiotomies were performed for gastrointestinal disease were reviewed. In all 20 foals, persistent pain and/or progressive abdominal distension were the primary clinical findings influencing the decision to operate. However, ancilliary laboratory data were important to the proper medical management of these foals during anaesthesia and following surgery. Surgical diagnoses of the 20 foals included ileus (nine foals; 45 per cent), small colon obstruction (five foals; 25 per cent), large colon displacement (three foals; 15 per cent), ...
Serum alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes in the horse–variation with age, training and in different pathological conditions.
Zentralblatt fur Veterinarmedizin. Reihe A    January 1, 1988   Volume 35, Issue 1 13-23 doi: 10.1111/j.1439-0442.1988.tb00002.x
Thorén-Tolling K.Serum alkaline Phosphatase isoenzyme (ALP) activity was measured by agarose gel electrophoresis in horses, Swedish half-breds and trotters, of varying age and during different conditions of training. Thus the effects of aging and growing on the isoenzyme activities from birth up to about 3 years of age was studied. The influence of training during the first year of life on the ALP isoenzyme pattern was also evaluated. Furthermore the isoenzyme pattern in adult horses suffering from different kinds of diseases was studied. In newborn and very young horses normally two different isoenzyme fra...
Effects of halothane anesthesia on the clearance of gentamicin sulfate in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1988   Volume 49, Issue 1 19-22
Smith CM, Steffey EP, Baggot JD, Dunlop CI, Farver TB.Inhalation anesthetics decrease the clearance of some drugs that are eliminated by renal excretion. The purpose of the study reported here was to investigate the effects of halothane anesthesia on the pharmacokinetics and urinary excretion of gentamicin sulfate, using the horse as a model. Using a crossover design, pharmacokinetic values after a single IV dose of gentamicin (4 mg/kg) were compared in halothane-anesthetized and unanesthetized horses. Compared with unanesthetized horses, the anesthetized horses had significant decreases in total body clearance (P less than 0.01) and apparent vol...
Suitability of human, bovine, equine, and ovine tooth enamel for studies of artificial bacterial carious lesions.
Caries research    January 1, 1988   Volume 22, Issue 6 327-336 doi: 10.1159/000261132
Edmunds DH, Whittaker DK, Green RM.The progress of artificial caries-like lesions created in human, bovine, equine, and ovine enamel has been studied. Lesions were produced by exposure to an acid gel system or by 5-day exposure to a sequential batch culture technique using Streptococcus mutans NCTC 10832. Longitudinal ground sections were prepared. The lesions were of similar appearance in all species when examined in polarized light. The depth in human enamel was approximately half that in the animal species. Microradiography confirmed subsurface demineralization in all four species. Similar depth ratios were seen in the scann...
Classification of the main macroscopic lesions produced by larvae of Gasterophilus spp. (Diptera:Gasterophilidae) in free-ranging horses in Umbria.
The Cornell veterinarian    January 1, 1988   Volume 78, Issue 1 43-52
Principato M.Listed and described herein are the main macroscopic lesions produced along the whole digestive tract of free-ranging horses by larvae of the five Gasterophilus spp., occurring in Umbria, a region of central Italy: Gasterophilus intestinalis, Gasterophilus nasalis, Gasterophilus pecorum, Gasterophilus inermis, Gasterophilus haemorrhoidalis. Lesions are classified on the basis of their sizes and shapes and the host's anatomic sites infested, and they are examined in relation to the developmental stages of larvae causing them. The examination of the lesions shows that it is very difficult to dif...
Ultrastructural description of a new chytrid genus of caecum anaerobe, Caecomyces equi gen. nov., sp. nov., assigned to the Neocallimasticaceae.
Bio Systems    January 1, 1988   Volume 21, Issue 3-4 403-415 doi: 10.1016/0303-2647(88)90039-1
Gold JJ, Heath IB, Bauchop T.Vegetative and reproductive stages of Caecomyces equi gen. nov., sp. nov. isolated from the horse caecum were examined by light and electron microscopy. This organism, which is similar to isolates known as Sphaeromonas communis, produces uniflagellate, uninucleate zoospores whose perikinetosomal structures, i.e. circumflagellar ring, spur, struts and scoop, are similar in many respects to those described in species of Neocallimastix. Microtubular roots extend basally from the spur and associate with hydrogenosomes and the nucleus. Another group of microtubules radiates laterally in a fan-shape...
Effects of lesion size and location on equine articular cartilage repair.
Canadian journal of veterinary research = Revue canadienne de recherche veterinaire    January 1, 1988   Volume 52, Issue 1 137-146
Hurtig MB, Fretz PB, Doige CE, Schnurr DL.The mechanisms and completeness of equine articular cartilage repair were studied in ten horses over a nine month period. Large (15 mm square) and small (5 mm square) full-thickness lesions were made in weight bearing and nonweight bearing areas of the radiocarpal, middle carpal and femoropatellar joints. The horses were euthanized in groups of two 1, 2.5, 4, 5 and 9 months later. Gross pathology, microradiography, and histopathology were used to evaluate qualitative aspects of articular repair. Computer assisted microdensitometry of safranin-O stained cartilage sections was used to quantitate...
Microcirculation of the coronary band of the equine hoof.
Acta anatomica    January 1, 1988   Volume 133, Issue 1 24-26 doi: 10.1159/000146608
Marais J, Masty J.Scanning-electron-microscopic examination of corrosion casts was used to investigate the microcirculation of the coronary border of the equine hoof. Numerous peg-shaped capillary plexuses derived from arterioles extended distally from the dorsal branches of the digital arteries parallel to the hoof wall. The plexuses varied in length and consisted of a fine network of interconnected capillaries that converged to join a centrally situated venule. These centrally situated venules within the papillary plexuses gave rise to a vast venous plexus deep to the coronary band.

Uterine contractions in nonpregnant and early pregnant mares and jennies as determined by ultrasonography.
Journal of animal science    January 1, 1988   Volume 66, Issue 1 250-254 doi: 10.2527/jas1988.661250x
Cross DT, Ginther OJ.Uterine contractions in 8 nonpregnant and 13 pregnant mares were studied using ultrasonography. A 1-min video tape recording was made of longitudinal real-time images of the uterine body. An overall uterine contractile activity score (0 = no or minimal activity to 4 = maximal activity) was assigned to each video tape segment. There was a day effect (P less than .01) and an interaction (P less than .01) of reproductive status X day. Uterine activity scores were highest on d 14 to d 18 (d 0 = day of ovulation) for nonpregnant mares and on d 10 to d 14 for pregnant mares. Uterine activity scores ...
Asinine herpesvirus genomes: comparison with those of the equine herpesviruses.
Archives of virology    January 1, 1988   Volume 101, Issue 3-4 183-190 doi: 10.1007/BF01310999
Browning GF, Ficorilli N, Studdert MJ.Two previously unknown and distinct herpesviruses were isolated from donkeys. One, with the characteristics of a betaherpesvirus, was isolated from the leukocytes of an apparently healthy donkey, while the second, an alphaherpesvirus, was recovered from the nasal cavity of donkeys given high doses of corticosteroids, and caused rhinitis in two seronegative weanling donkeys when they were intranasally infected. Few, if any, restriction endonuclease fragments were shared by the donkey betaherpesvirus, equine herpesvirus 2 (EHV 2) or EHV 5, a second distinctly different equine betaherpesvirus, no...
Histology of the post partum equine uterus as determined by endometrial biopsies.
Acta veterinaria Scandinavica    January 1, 1988   Volume 29, Issue 2 173-180 doi: 10.1186/BF03548368
Katila T.Altogether 156 equine endometrial biopsies were carried out during the post partum (p.p.) period: immediately after parturition until 15 days after foaling. The histological changes are described. The rapid restoration of the equine endometrium is remarkable. The destruction of the luminal epithelium is minor and regeneration takes place rapidly. Remnants of the placenta, the microcotyledons and desquamated cells, have disappeared by 5 p.p. The transformation of glands from a pronounced secretory pattern to normal appearance also takes only 5 days. The occurrence of neutrophils and lymphocytes...
Variability of fiber size, capillary density and capillary length related to horse muscle fixation procedures.
Acta anatomica    January 1, 1988   Volume 133, Issue 2 89-95 doi: 10.1159/000146621
Mermod L, Hoppeler H, Kayar SR, Straub R, Weibel ER.Muscle samples were taken from the superficial part of the semitendinosus muscle of four standardbred horses to compare the effects of three different fixation procedures on fiber size and capillarity. Infiltration fixation in an extended position of the muscle was compared to immersion fixation and infiltration fixation in a flexed position of the limb. The capillary length density was used to estimate muscle capillarity. Infiltration fixation was found to be a viable alternative to perfusion fixation of muscles for morphometry of fiber size and capillary length density allowing muscle tissue...
Effect of sample freezing on the isolation of Mycoplasma spp. from the clitoral fossa of the mare.
Canadian journal of veterinary research = Revue canadienne de recherche veterinaire    January 1, 1988   Volume 52, Issue 1 147-148
Bermudez V, Miller RB, Johnson W, Rosendal S, Ruhnke L.The growth of Mycoplasma equigenitalium and Mycoplasma subdolum from specimens collected from the clitoral fossa of each of four Standardbred mares was not diminished by freezing of the specimens in liquid nitrogen (-196 degrees C) for up to 30 days when compared to samples cultured immediately.

Animal genetics    January 1, 1988   Volume 19, Issue 4 417-425 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2052.1988.tb00833.x
Angelos J, Oppenheim Y, Rebhun W, Mohammed H, Antczak DF.The relationship between breed and the risk of developing sarcoid tumours or uveitis of unknown etiology was evaluated in a retrospective study of 16242 equine cases admitted between 1975 and 1987 to the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine Large Animal Hospital, and 3198 equine tissue samples sent to the New York State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory between 1977 and 1987. Of 120 sarcoid cases from the Large Animal Hospital, sarcoids were twice as likely to develop in Quarter Horses (odds ratio, OR = 1.8, P less than 0.05) relative to Thoroughbreds and less than half as likely to de...
[The use of a beta 2-mimetic agent (clenbuterol) in equine pregnancy disorders and obstetrics].
Tierarztliche Praxis    January 1, 1988   Volume 16, Issue 1 57-59
Bostedt H.A clinical study about the effects of a beta 2-mimetic agent (Clenbuterol) in mares with pregnancy disorders or disorders during the periparturient period (n = 34) is reported. In general, a single dose of 0.3 mg Clenbuterol given i.v. induces sufficient tocolysis. Subsequent doses or follow-up treatment depend upon individual development during dystocia, indication of treatment and clinical preparturient status (dorsoflexio uteri ante partum, abortus imminens, preparturient labor pains).
[Indirect blood pressure determination in the horse with the Dinamap 1255 research monitor].
Tierarztliche Praxis    January 1, 1988   Volume 16, Issue 4 373-376
Fritsch R, Hausmann R.In 26 horses measurings of blood pressure, using the Dinamap 1255 research monitor, were performed and compared for accuracy with blood pressure values obtained by direct measurement in the arteria carotis. It was found that oscillometrically ascertained initial blood values in standing horses have a sufficient correlation to initial blood pressure values obtained by direct measurement. But every blood pressure change is registered too late, when using the oscillometric blood pressure apparatus. This temporal delay becomes unacceptable, when a considerable increase in blood pressure occurs. A ...
