Regional distribution of brain blood flow during maximal exertion in splenectomized ponies.
Respiration physiology    April 1, 1987   Volume 68, Issue 1 77-84 doi: 10.1016/0034-5687(87)90078-8
Manohar M.It has been reported in exercising ponies that O2 supply to all regions of the brain increased primarily due to a large increment in CaO2 and it was implied that this may reflect a generalized increase in brain metabolism during strenuous exercise. Splenectomy ameliorates the rise in CaO2 observed with exercise in ponies. Thus, the objective of the present study was to examine changes in regional brain blood flow and O2 supply of splenectomized ponies with sub-maximal and maximal exercise and to compare these data with previous observations in normal ponies. It was reasoned that in the absence...
Esophageal manometry in horses, cows, and sheep during deglutition.
American journal of veterinary research    April 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 4 547-551
Clark ES, Morris DD, Whitlock RH.Esophageal pressure events during deglutition were evaluated in healthy adult animals (6 horses, 6 cattle, and 5 sheep), using a 3-side hole catheter assembly perfused with water by use of a hydraulic-capillary infusion system. The peak postdeglutition pressure, contraction time, and contraction length were determined for the cranial and caudal esophageal sphincter regions and for each functionally different region within the body of the esophagus. The percentage of deglutitions in which relaxation developed at the sphincter regions and the propagation speed (velocity at which pressure waves t...

Neurological disease and lipofuscinosis in horses and sheep grazing Trachyandra divaricata (branched onion weed) in south Western Australia.
Australian veterinary journal    April 1, 1987   Volume 64, Issue 4 105-108 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1987.tb09639.x
Huxtable CR, Chapman HM, Main DC, Vass D, Pearse BH, Hilbert BJ.A severe paretic syndrome accompanied by intense neuronal lipofuscinosis is described in sheep and horses exposed to Trachyandra divaricata. This is a newly recognised toxic hazard for grazing livestock in the coastal region of the south west of Western Australia. Animals appear to become affected over a period of weeks when summer conditions induce a scarcity of alternative feed. The disease is discussed in relation to its recent documentation in South Africa where the plant is indigenous.
Efficacy of four anthelmintics against benzimidazole-resistant cyathostomes of horses.
The Veterinary record    March 28, 1987   Volume 120, Issue 13 293-296 doi: 10.1136/vr.120.13.293
Bürger HJ, Bauer C.In order to confirm benzimidazole resistance as recommended at a workshop of the Commission of the European Communities the isolate 'E' of cyathostome strongyles originating from a stud where benzimidazole resistance had been demonstrated by egg hatch tests and by egg count reduction tests was investigated in two series of critical tests. Each of 11 foals reared strongyle-free was infected with 130,000 third stage cyathostome larvae. One animal remained untreated, two pairs of foals were treated with paste formulations of the (pro)benzimidazoles cambendazole (20 mg/kg bodyweight) or febantel (...

Biochimica et biophysica acta    March 18, 1987   Volume 912, Issue 1 87-97 doi: 10.1016/0167-4838(87)90251-2
Satterlee JD, Moench SJ, Erman JE.Cytochrome-c peroxidase (ferrocytochrome-c:hydrogen-peroxide oxidoreductase, EC 1.11.1.5) forms a noncovalent 1:1 complex with horse cytochrome c in low ionic strength solution that is detectable by proton NMR spectroscopy. When the entire proton hyperfine-shifted spectrum is considered only five hyperfine resonances exhibit unambiguously detectable shifts: the heme 8-CH3 and 3-CH3 resonances, single proton resonances near 19 ppm and -4 ppm and the methionine-80 methyl group. These shifts are very similar to those observed for the covalently crosslinked complex of cytochrome-c peroxidase and h...

The Journal of heredity    March 1, 1987   Volume 78, Issue 2 75-80 doi: 10.1093/oxfordjournals.jhered.a110340
Bowling AT, Ryder OA.Ninety-six Przewalski's horses (Equus przewalskii) were blood typed using systems of inherited blood variants known to be highly effective for parentage testing of domestic horses (E. caballus). Sixteen red cell antigenic factors detected using sera prepared by alloimmunization of domestic horses were shown to be inherited in six systems (A, C, D, P, Q, and U) and in the same patterns as domestic horses. Family data confirmed autosomal, codominant inheritance at five loci of serum protein variants (Al, Tf, Xk, Pi, and Es) and three loci of red cell proteins (PGM, PHI, and Hb). One serum protei...

Veterinary surgery : VS    March 1, 1987   Volume 16, Issue 2 126-130 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1987.tb00923.x
Bukowiecki CF, Bramlage LR, Gabel AA.Forty-eight limbs of 12 freshly euthanized horses were used to generate data on the strength of the equine suspensory apparatus. The point of failure of the suspensory apparatus of each limb was determined. Immediately before euthanasia, 6 of the 12 horses (thoroughbreds and standardbreds) had been engaged in active training or racing, and six horses in stall and/or pasture activity. In the actively training or racing horses, the point of acute failure of the suspensory apparatus was within the proximal sesamoid bones in 20 (83%) limbs (resulting in 17 apical fractures, 2 basilar fractures, an...
Radiolabeling of equine platelets in plasma with 111In-(2-mercaptopyridine-N-oxide) and their in vivo survival.
American journal of veterinary research    March 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 3 385-391
Coyne CP, Kelly AB, Hornof WJ, O'Brien TR, Philp MS, Lamb JF.A method is presented for the in vitro isolation and radiolabeling of equine platelets with the isotope indium 111 (111In: half-life = 2.8 days, gamma = 173 keV, 89%; 247 keV, 94%). The technique described involves complexing 111In with the lipid-soluble chelating agent, 2-mercaptopyridine-N-oxide (merc), in an aqueous medium. 111In-merc platelet-labeling efficiencies in autologous plasma pretreated with or without ferric citrate reagent were 82 +/- 7% and 24 +/- 12%, respectively. Mean intravascular survivals of 111In-merc-radiolabeled platelets in 8 healthy horses according to simple linear,...
Immediate split-thickness autogenous skin grafts in the horse. Case reports on the treatment of equine sarcoids in 3 horses.
Veterinary surgery : VS    March 1, 1987   Volume 16, Issue 2 167-171 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1987.tb00931.x
Wilson DG, Peyton LC, Wolf G.Three horses with equine sarcoids were treated with radical surgical excision and immediate split-thickness skin grafts. Graft take ranged from 50 to 100%, and the epithelial coverage attained resulted in an early functional repair. In no instance was there a recurrence of the sarcoid.
Pharmacokinetics and renal clearance of sulfamethazine, sulfamerazine, and sulfadiazine and their N4-acetyl and hydroxy metabolites in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    March 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 3 392-402
Nouws JF, Firth EC, Vree TB, Baakman M.Plasma disposition, protein binding, urinary recovery, and renal clearance of sulfamethazine (SMZ), sulfamerazine (SMR), and sulfadiazine (SDZ) and their N4-acetyl and hydroxy derivatives were studied in 4 horses in a crossover trial. The plasma concentration-time curves of the metabolites paralleled those of the parent drug in the elimination phase. Sulfamethazine and SMR were extensively metabolized. In plasma and urine, the main metabolite of the 3 sulfonamides tested was the 5-hydroxypyrimidine derivative, which was highly glucuronidated. Difference in elimination half-life of SMZ, SMR, an...

Preliminary study of quantitative aspects and the effect of pulsed electromagnetic field treatment on the incorporation of equine cancellous bone grafts.
Equine veterinary journal    March 1, 1987   Volume 19, Issue 2 120-124 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1987.tb02603.x
Kold SE, Hickman J, Meisen F.The quantitative aspects of equine cancellous bone graft incorporation and the possibility of influencing graft incorporation by daily exposure to a pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) was studied in eight yearling ponies. In order to be able to quantify formative aspects of graft remodelling, a double and treble tetracycline intravital labelling technique was used. Intravital radiographs were obtained at regular intervals throughout the trial, but were found to be of little assistance in assessing any differences between stimulated and non-stimulated grafts. The ponies were humanely destroyed...
A rapid microtitration serum agglutination test for the detection of contagious equine metritis antibodies.
The Onderstepoort journal of veterinary research    March 1, 1987   Volume 54, Issue 1 97-98

Two known positive sera were tested 100 times in 15 separate tests. The results were reproducible to within a twofold range. The test is capable of being carried out within 100 min.
Evaluation of creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase activities in clinically normal and abnormal equine joints.
American journal of veterinary research    March 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 3 463-466
Yancik SA, McIlwraith CW, Wagner AE, Trotter GW.Creatine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LD) enzyme activities and isoenzymes were determined for synovial fluid, synovial membrane, and articular cartilage from 24 clinically normal equine tarsocrural (tibiotarsal) and femoropatellar joints. All 3 tissues contained LD isoenzymes LD1 to LD5, and CK isoenzymes BB and MM. The CK isoenzyme MB was not found. The similarities in isoenzyme composition of these 3 tissues made differentiation of the source of LD and CK impossible by isoenzyme pattern alone. Reference values for the total enzyme activities of specific joint tissues also had wide...
