Use of procainamide gels in the purification of human and horse serum cholinesterases.
The Biochemical journal    April 1, 1983   Volume 211, Issue 1 243-250 doi: 10.1042/bj2110243
Ralston JS, Main AR, Kilpatrick BF, Chasson AL.Two large-scale methods based primarily on the use of procainamide-Sepharose gels were developed for the purification of horse and human serum non-specific cholinesterases. With method I, the procainamide-Sepharose 4B gel was used in the first step to handle large volumes of serum. With method II, the procainamide-Sepharose 4B gel was used in the final step to obtain pure enzyme. Although both methods gave electrophoretically pure cholinesterase preparations in good yields, they were significantly more efficient at purifying the horse enzyme than the human enzyme. To study this problem, the re...
Cell-mediated immune response to Babesia equi-transformed lymphoblastoid cells in vitro. Zweygarth E, Ahmed JS, Rehbein G, Voigt WP.The capacity of equine peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) to proliferate in the presence of Babesia equi-transformed lymphoblastoid stimulator cells was tested in an autologous as well as in an allogenic one way mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR). It was found that both autologous and allogeneic responder lymphocytes incorporated high amounts of 3H-thymidine. The incorporation of 3H-thymidine was lower in MLR using as stimulator cells lymphocytes from which the cell line had previously been established, than when using parasitized culture cells as stimulator. Proliferation of PBL was achieved onl...
The metabolism of fenclofenac in the horse.
Xenobiotica; the fate of foreign compounds in biological systems    April 1, 1983   Volume 13, Issue 4 233-240 doi: 10.3109/00498258309052259
Marsh MV, Caldwell J, Sloan TP, Smith RL, Horner M, Moss MS.14C-Fenclofenac (2-(2'-4'-dichlorophenoxy)-phenylacetic acid) was administered orally to horses, and urinary metabolites investigated by chromatography. Fenclofenac was rapidly absorbed and eliminated, with a plasma half-life (t1/2) of 2.3 h, with 83.2 and 85.8% of the dose being recovered in the urine in 0-24 h. The major urinary metabolite was the ester glucuronide (58.8, 70.0% dose), and evidence is presented that this metabolite undergoes a structural rearrangement to give beta-glucuronidase-resistant isomers. The other 14C-labelled components in horse urine were unchanged fenclofenac (13....
Structural and functional organization of the suprapatella in two cercopithecines.
Journal of morphology    April 1, 1983   Volume 176, Issue 1 113-119 doi: 10.1002/jmor.1051760108
Walji AH, Fasana FV.Gross and microscopic study of Cercopithecus aethiops pygerythrus and Papio cyanocephalus anubis shows that these cercopithecines have a quadriceps tendon the distal portion of which consists mostly of dense collagenous bundles with scattered fine elastic fibres most of which lie in the loose connective tissue planes within and around the tendon and around blood vessels. A distinct fibrovesicular structure, the suprapatella, lies within the tendon of the vastus intermedius above the pony patella. Histologically, this structure is characterised by interwoven bundles of collagenous fibres, among...
Morphologic and biochemical changes in cartilage of foals treated with dexamethasone.
The Cornell veterinarian    April 1, 1983   Volume 73, Issue 2 170-192
Glade MJ, Krook L, Schryver HF, Hintz HF.Epiphyseal and articular cartilages were examined in pony foals treated with intramuscular injections of either 0.5 mg dexamethasone per 100 kg bodyweight daily for 3, 8 or 11 months, or 5.0 mg per 100 kg for 11 months, and in horse foals treated with 5.0 mg per 100 kg for 20 weeks. The proximal femoral growth plates exhibited increased spatial separation between chondrocyte columns, narrowed zones of disorganized columnar and hypertrophic cartilage, abnormal penetration of hypertrophic cartilage by metaphyseal capillaries, retained cartilage in the spongiosa, distal terminal plate formation, ...
Thermographic evaluation of horses with podotrochlosis.
American journal of veterinary research    April 1, 1983   Volume 44, Issue 4 535-539
Turner TA, Fessler JF, Lamp M, Pearce JA, Geddes LA.The distal forelimbs of 10 clinically normal horses with hair clipped on 1 limb were thermographically scanned before and after exercise. The thermal patterns, temperature distribution, and temperature changes after exercise were determined and compared with those of 8 horses with podotrochlosis. Clipping the hair did not cause changes in the thermal patterns, but the clipped limbs were warmer than the unclipped limbs. The temperature of the limbs of horses with podotrochlosis did not increase as much after exercise as did the limbs of normal horses. The failure of skin temperature increase co...
Trimethoprim-sulfadiazine in the horse: serum, synovial, peritoneal, and urine concentrations after single-dose intravenous administration.
American journal of veterinary research    April 1, 1983   Volume 44, Issue 4 540-543
Brown MP, Kelly RH, Stover SM, Gronwall R.Six healthy adult mares were given a single IV injection of trimethoprim (TMP)-sulfadiazine (SDZ) at a dosage rate of 2.5 mg of TMP/kg of body weight and 12.5 mg of SDZ/kg. Serum, synovial, peritoneal, and urine TMP-SDZ concentrations were measured serially over a 48-hour period. The highest measured mean concentrations of TMP and SDZ were found in the first (0.5 hour) sample of serum, synovial fluid, and peritoneal fluid. The mean peak concentrations of TMP and SDZ averaged 4.37 micrograms/ml and 21.81 micrograms/ml for serum, 2.95 micrograms/ml and 15.31 micrograms/ml for synovial fluid, and...
Guidelines for the future of equine locomotion research.
Equine veterinary journal    April 1, 1983   Volume 15, Issue 2 103-110 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1983.tb01728.x
Leach DH, Crawford WH.This paper describes the major areas that require investigation in equine locomotion and outlines a plan for such research in both the Thoroughbred and Standardbred. Fifteen topics for future investigation have been selected and given an order of priority. These topics deal with characteristics of normal locomotion, factors which influence locomotion, the epidemiology and economics of lameness and the clinical identification of lameness.
Kinematics of the equine thoracolumbar spine.
Equine veterinary journal    April 1, 1983   Volume 15, Issue 2 117-122 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1983.tb01732.x
Townsend HG, Leach DH, Fretz PB.At least three types of movement take place in the joint complexes of the equine thoracolumbar spine: dorsoventral flexion and extension, axial rotation and lateral bending. Using the standard right-handed Cartesian coordinate system, these movements may be defined as rotation about the x, y and z axes respectively. Except in cases of intervertebral fusion, all three types of movement occur in each joint complex of the equine back. The greatest amount of dorsoventral movement takes place at the lumbosacral and the first thoracic intervertebral joints. The greatest amount of axial rotation and ...
Examination of the origin of increased equine serum alkaline phosphatase concentrations.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    April 1, 1983   Volume 24, Issue 4 108-111
Trueman KF, Lumsden JH, McSherry BJ.Serum alkaline phosphatase activity was found to be increased in 32.6% of equine samples analyzed at the Ontario Veterinary College over an 18 month period. An attempt was made using sensitivity to L-phenylalanine and heat to identify the origin of increased serum alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes present in 44 clinical cases. No difference in sensitivity to either procedure was observed for serum alkaline phosphatase from groups of foals and horses representing different clinical problems. Alkaline phosphatase of osseous tissue origin appeared to be the major source of activity for each group o...
A review of research on equine locomotion and biomechanics.
Equine veterinary journal    April 1, 1983   Volume 15, Issue 2 93-102 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1983.tb01726.x
Leach DH, Dagg AI.A review of the literature about equine locomotion and biomechanics is presented to summarise available knowledge and provide perspective to current and proposed research programmes. It is evident that much past research has failed to provide sufficient information on basic principles of these two disciplines and that information is now required before progress can be made on more applied research topics. However, useful contributions have been made in gait typology, analysis of racetrack surface and design and limb kinetics, kinematics and coordination.

Echocardiographic features of aortic valve endocarditis in a dog, a cow, and a horse.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    March 15, 1983   Volume 182, Issue 6 595-599
Bonagura JD, Pipers FS.A horse, a cow, and a dog with aortic valve vegetative endocarditis were studied by M-mode echocardiography. Echocardiographic abnormalities of the aortic valve, mitral valve, and left ventricle were observed. These features were identical to those reported in human beings with aortic valve endocarditis. Abnormalities associated with aortic valve endocarditis included irregular thickening of the valve, multiple linear echoes in the aortic root, diastolic prolapse of the aortic vegetation, and diastolic fluttering of a torn aortic valve. Some of these features were found in each animal. The con...
A reagin-like antibody in horse serum. II. Anti-human IgE induced reversed cutaneous anaphylaxis-like responses in horse skin.
Veterinary research communications    March 1, 1983   Volume 6, Issue 2 111-122 doi: 10.1007/BF02214903
Matthews AG, Imlah P, McPherson EA.Fc specific anti-human IgE serum induced prolonged reversed cutaneous anaphylaxis (RCA)-like reactions in horse skin. Morphologically and histologically, these reactions resembled passively induced late cutaneous anaphylaxis responses in human skin, but differed from reversed passive Arthus responses induced in horse skin using anti-horse IgG serum. The induction of RCA-like responses in horse skin by anti-human IgE indicates shared Fc antigenic determinants on human IgE and a horse homocytotropic or reagin-like antibody.

Microangiographic studies of metaphyseal vessels in young foals.
Research in veterinary science    March 1, 1983   Volume 34, Issue 2 231-235
Firth EC, Poulos PW.Selective perfusion and microangiographic examination of the radius and metacarpus of 30 foals were performed. Vessels of extraosseous origin supplying the peripheral part of the metaphysis were not demonstrated in young foals, but became more obvious in older animals. The development of this vessel system coincided with the reduction of transphyseal vessels from the epiphysis crossing the growth plate.
The effect of nutritional stress on the plasma progestagen levels and embryonic mortality in twin pregnancies of mares.
Journal of the South African Veterinary Association    March 1, 1983   Volume 54, Issue 1 65-66
Van Niekerk CH, Morgenthal JC, Starke CJ.Two thoroughbred mares bearing twins as diagnosed by rectal palpation, were subjected to nutritional stress by drastically reducing the daily ration. This resulted in a marked reduction in plasma progestagen levels and the death of either one or both of the twin embryos.
Testosterone effects on mares during synchronization with altrenogest: FSH, LH, estrous duration and pregnancy rate.
Journal of animal science    March 1, 1983   Volume 56, Issue 3 678-686 doi: 10.2527/jas1983.563678x
Thompson DL, Godke RA, Squires EL.Twelve mares fed altrenogest for 14 d were used to study the effects of a single injection of testosterone propionate on concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) during diestrus, and to relate the normal and perturbed patterns of FSH secretion to subsequent estrous characteristics and fertility. Seven of 12 mares received testosterone propionate at 200 micrograms/kg of body weight on d 5 of progestogen feeding. Mares were teased and blood samples were drawn daily; all mares were artificially inseminated at the first estrus after progestogen treatment. Testosterone propionate treatm...

Mortality rates and associated factors in equine colic operations – a retrospective study of 341 operations.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    March 1, 1983   Volume 24, Issue 3 76-85
Pascoe PJ, McDonell WN, Trim CM, Van Gorder J.A retrospective survey of 300 surgical treatments for colic involving 341 interventions was carried out to determine mortality rates and associated factors. These horses had been referred to the Ontario Veterinary College over the period September 1974 to February 1980. Data from the case records was collected and stored on a computer and statistical analysis was carried out using X(2) tests.Fifty percent (150/300) of the horses survived to be discharged from the hospital. Fifty-two horses were euthanized during the operation and another ten horses should have been; if these cases are excluded...
[Economic importance of protecting draft horses used in forestry against blood-sucking dipterous insects].
Veterinarni medicina    March 1, 1983   Volume 28, Issue 3 169-175
Ríha J, Minár J, Králík O, Krupa V.The adverse effect of blood-sucking dipterous insects (gadflies, gnats, black flies, midges) was determined and checked, as exerted on the working performance of draft horses working in forests; the possibilities of protecting horses with repellents were studied at the same time. The trial was conducted under field conditions in the territory of the Broumov Forest Establishment in the Náchod and Trutnov districts. A 10% water emulsion of the repellent, diethyltoluamide, was used; the horses were treated with the emulsion in a 24-hour interval. Over the seventy working days from the 1st of Jul...
Reliability of single-sample phosphorus fractional excretion determination as a measure of daily phosphorus renal clearance in equids.
American journal of veterinary research    March 1, 1983   Volume 44, Issue 3 500-502
Lane VM, Merritt AM.In 4 healthy horses and 1 Welsh pony, fractional renal excretions of phosphorus (FEp) determined from 9 hourly time collections taken over a 24-hour period were compared to assess whether a single-sample collection would be an accurate indicator of the daily FEp. The mean FEp for each animal varied from 0.115% to 0.302%; the 2 animals with the highest values were significantly different (P less than 0.05) from the 3 with the lowest values. Individual variation within animals was not great, however, because it was calculated that the 24-hour FEp value could be found within +/- 0.087% of the sin...
A morphological study of the lesions of African horsesickness.
The Onderstepoort journal of veterinary research    March 1, 1983   Volume 50, Issue 1 7-24
Newsholme SJ.Gross, histological and ultrastructural findings are described in 6 natural cases and in 2 experimental cases of African horsesickness. From the gross lesions the cases were divisible into 2 groups which represented the previously described pulmonary and mixed forms of the disease. Histologically, abundance of fibrin and inflammatory cells in oedematous lung suggests that the pulmonary lesion is an exudative pneumonia. Lymphoid depletion and necrosis in germinal centres were consistently present. Electron microscopy failed to demonstrate virus particles or virus-associated structures in the ti...
Effect of intranasal oxygen administration on arterial blood gas and acid base parameters in spontaneously delivered, term induced and induced premature foals.
Research in veterinary science    March 1, 1983   Volume 34, Issue 2 159-162
Rose RJ, Hodgson DR, Leadon DP, Rossdale PD.The effect of intranasal administration of oxygen at a flow rate of 10 litres per minute for 10 minutes, was studied in a total of 19 foals (thoroughbred and pony) aged between 0.5 and 12 hours. Arterial blood samples were collected before and after oxygen administration for the determination of paO2, paCO2, pHa and base excess. The foals were divided into three groups: five spontaneously delivered thoroughbred and pony foals (group 1), seven term induced thoroughbred foals (group 2) and seven induced premature pony foals (group 3). To examine the effect of duration of oxygen administration on...
