Linkage of the grey coat colour locus to microsatellites on horse chromosome 25. The progressive loss of colour in the hair of grey horses is controlled by a dominantly inherited allele at the Grey locus (GG). In this study, two paternal Quarter Horse (QH) families segregating for the GG allele were genotyped with a set of 101 microsatellite markers spanning the 31 autosomes and the X chromosome. Correlation between the osmotic second virial coefficient and solubility for equine serum albumin and ovalbumin. The Haas - Drenth - Wilson (HDW) (Haas et al., 1999) theoretical model was used to correlate osmotic second virial coefficient (B) values with solubility (S) values for equine serum albumin (ESA) and ovalbumin for corresponding solution conditions. The best fit from the theoretical model was compared to experimental S versus B data. B values were experimentally measured using static light scattering. Selection of recently isolated colicinogenic Escherichia coli strains inhibitory to Escherichia coli O157:H7. Escherichia coli strains were screened for their ability to inhibit E. coli O157:H7. An initial evaluation of 18 strains carrying previously characterized colicins determined that only colicin E7 inhibited all of the E. coli O157:H7 strains tested. Measurement of leptin and insulin-like growth factor-I in seminal plasma from different species. The multi-functional proteins, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and leptin were present in seminal plasma from different species. Concentrations of IGF-I in equine and porcine semen were 20 and 17.5 ng/ml, respectively. Seminal plasma concentrations of leptin were 1 ng/ml in human and 11 ng/ml in porcine samples.
[Microsatellite analysis in a population of Baudet du Poitou donkeys]. A population of Baudet du Poitou donkeys was genetically characterized using microsatellites. The results were used to verify the pedigrees and to estimate the genetic variability. It could be confirmed that a equine parentage test kit works well for donkeys and that by using 13 microsatellites more than 99% of wrong pedigree informations would be detected. The genetic variability was comparable to a representative group of Baudet du Poitou donkeys in France.
Spatial distribution of fiber types within skeletal muscle fascicles from Standardbred horses. Skeletal muscle fascicles from superficial and deep portions of semitendinosus (ST) and gluteus medius (GM) muscles from Standardbred trotters were analyzed with regard to muscle fiber type proportion (types I, IIA, and IIB) and spatial distribution. Hierarchical analysis of genetic structure in Spanish donkey breeds using microsatellite markers. The hierarchical population structure of five, native-Spanish donkey breeds (Andaluza, Catalana, Mallorquina, Encartaciones and Zamorano-Leonesa) has been studied using F-statistics. Major constituents, leptin, and non-protein nitrogen compounds in mares’ colostrum and milk. Five Haflinger mares were hand-milked at 0 h (pre-suckle) and 6 h (postsuckle), 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h after parturition. Gynandromorphism in Amblyomma cajennense and Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae). During a survey of ticks on horses in November 2000, at the University of São Paulo farm in Pirassununga county, São Paulo, Brazil, 1 gynandromorph of Amblyomma cajennense was collected from a naturally infested horse. In another survey on dogs in March 2001, in the urban area of Monte Negro, Rondônia, Brazil, a gynandromorph of Rhipicephalus sanguineus was collected from a naturally infested dog. Weekly update: West Nile virus activity–United States, July 17-23, 2002. This report summarizes West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance data reported to CDC through ArboNET and verified by states and other jurisdictions as of July 23, 2002. During the reporting week of July 17-23, nine human cases of WNV were reported from two states (Louisiana and Mississippi). During the same period, WNV infections were reported in 202 dead crows, 48 other dead birds, 13 horses, and 69 mosquito pools.

Evaluation of factors affecting individual assignment precision using microsatellite data from horse breeds and simulated breed crosses. Assignment tests have been utilized to investigate population classification, measure genetic diversity and to solve forensic questions.
