The amino acid sequence of equine alpha-lactalbumin. The amino acid sequence of equine alpha-lactalbumin has been determined with the aid of an automatic sequencer. The protein chain consists of 123 amino acids and has a Mr of 14218. Elucidation of the structure involved sequence determination of native protein (residues 1-32), cyanogen bromide fragments, and tryptic, chymotryptic and S. aureus V8 proteolytic peptides. Approximately 67% of the residues are identical with corresponding residues of bovine alpha-lactalbumin B, and there is close homology with alpha-lactalbumin of other species.
Mare lactotransferrin: purification, analysis and N-terminal sequence determination. Mare lactotransferrin has been purified and analyzed. Its molecular mass is 81 kDa. A 28 amino acid long N-terminal sequence was established and a first series of comparisons with other transferrins was performed.
The effect of racetrack design on gait symmetry of the pacer. A survey of a western Canadian racetrack determined the superelevation and transition curves to be less than the cited design standards. High-speed cinematography was used to film seven Standardbred pacers as they proceeded around one curve of the track at racing speed and for each horse 19 temporal stride parameters were obtained from these films using a film analyzer system. Persistent vaginal haemorrhage in five mares caused by varicose veins of the vaginal wall. Persistent bleeding from the vulva was the only presenting clinical sign in five non-pregnant pluriparous mares varying in age from eight to 20 years. These were two hunter types, one shire, one thoroughbred and one Arab pony. The haemorrhage originated from ulcerated varicose veins present on the dorsal wall of the vagina adjacent to the vestibulovaginal junction. Equine hydatidosis: a new record for New Zealand. Cysts found in the liver of a horse which had never been out of New Zealand were used to infect two dogs which were slaughtered 35 days after infection. Large numbers of Echinococcus granulosus were recovered. These cestodes were compared with mature dog-sheep cestodes, using light and scanning electron microscopy and identified as the dog-horse strain of E.granulosus.
Direct evidence for linkage of roan and extension loci in Belgian horses. A bay roan Brabant Belgian stallion (ERn/ ern) was bred to eight chestnut American Belgian mares (ern/ ern), producing 57 foals. Thirty foals were bay roan, 25 were chestnut, one was bay, and one was chestnut roan. The recombination rate was 0.035 +/- 0.024, indicating fairly close linkage between the roan (Rn) and extension (E) loci.
Effects of furosemide on the plasma and urinary concentrations and the excretion of fentanyl: model for the study of drug interaction in the horse. The effects of furosemide (0.55 mg/kg IV) on the plasma and urinary fentanyl (PFE UFE) concentrations were studied during steady-state conditions. The PFE during the steady-state period was 0.31 +/- 0.027 ng/ml, with no significant changes occurring, even though the rate of excretion of fentanyl (EX) increased during the 1st hour from 112.0 +/- 21.6 to 534.5 +/- 82.9 ng/minute. The EX returned to control levels within 3 hours, as did the UFE. The injection of furosemide increased glomerular filtration rate from 1.97 +/- 0.21 to 3.81 +/- 0.75 ml/kg/min. Identification of swainsonine as a probable contributory mycotoxin in moldy forage mycotoxicoses. When infested with the fungus Rhizoctonia leguminicola, certain forages, e.g., red clover hay, can cause a "slobber syndrome" of varying severity when consumed by ruminants. The causative agent has been presumed to be slaframine [(1S,6S,8aS)-1-acetoxy-6-aminooctahydroindolizine], which is produced by R. leguminicola. Studies related to the metabolism of anabolic steroids in the horse: the phase I and phase II biotransformation of 19-nortestosterone in the equine castrate. The metabolism of 19-nor[4-14C]testosterone has been studied in the equine castrate. Following XAD-2 extraction of aliquots of the 0-24 h urine samples, the glucuronic acid and sulphate conjugates were separated by Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. The distribution and origin of a novel brain peptide, neuropeptide Y, in the spinal cord of several mammals. The distribution of neuropeptide Y [NPY]-immunoreactive material was examined in the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia of rat, guinea-pig, cat, marmoset, and horse. Considerable concentrations of NPY and similar distribution patterns of immunoreactive nerve fibres were found in the spinal cord of all species investigated. The prevalence and intensity of internal parasites of horses in the U.S.A. Fifty-five adult horses were necropsied over a 15-month period, and their worm burdens counted and speciated. Twenty-one species of Cyathostominae were recovered. Effects of centrifugation, glycerol level, cooling to 5 degrees C, freezing rate and thawing rate on the post-thaw motility of equine sperm. Five experiments evaluated the effects of processing, freezing and thawing techniques on post-thaw motility of equine sperm. Post-thaw motility was similar for sperm frozen using two cooling rates. Inclusion of 4% glycerol extender was superior to 2 or 6%. Thawing in 75 degrees C water for 7 sec was superior to thawing in 37 degrees C water for 30 sec. Endocrine aspects of early pregnancy in pony mares: a comparison of uterine luminal and peripheral plasma levels of steroids during the estrous cycle and early pregnancy. Comparisons of estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, and plasma progestin concentrations were made in uterine fluid and peripheral blood of nonpregnant and pregnant pony mares.
