[Activity of serum gonadotropins in pregnant zebras and mares]. Blood was collected from 28 zebra mare (Equus burchellia antiquorum) immediately after being shot in the Kruger National Park. The serum was separated within two hours after collection and then stored at -15 degrees C for later assay. Of these, thirteen selected samples were tested for gonadotrophic activity. Oxygen affinity responses to 2,3-diphosphoglycerate, and methaemoglobin formation in horse and human haemoglobins. The oxygen affinities of horse and human haemoglobins were compared in the absence and presence of the allosteric effector 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG). Horse haemoglobin solutions showed significantly smaller responses to the presence of 2,3-DPG, and this difference may be due to different amino acid substitutions at position NA2(2)beta. [Dexon, applicability in the horse (author’s transl)]. Dexon is a new, synthetic, absorbable suture material. Its applicability for suturing distally in the extremities of horses was tested in 65 cases. The indications included burried sutures as well as skin closure. It was concluded that the material can be used with advantage in cases traditionally sutured with catgut, vetafil or mersilene. It is technically a pleasant material and has further the advantage that it shall not be removed.
Plasma luteinizing hormone concentration in mares treated with gondotropin-releasing hormone and estradiol. Three experiments were performed to study the luteinizing hormone (LH) and ovulatory responses to various doses and methods of administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in estrous pony mares and the influence of estradiol-17beta (E2-17beta) on LH response to GnRH treatment. Isolation and partial characterization of the major glycoproteins of horse and swine erythrocyte membranes. The major glycoproteins of horse and swine erythrocyte membranes were isolated and examined chemically and immunologically. The major glycoprotein of horse erythrocyte membranes had a molecular weight of 33 000 and consisted of 46.2% protein and 53.8% carbohydrate, of which 9.4% was hexose, 10.1% hexosamine and 33.7% sialic acid. The transfer of passive immunity to the foal and its relation to immune status after birth. The mechanism of transfer of maternal immunity to the foal is reviewed. Maximal efficiency of macromolecular absorption by specialized cells of the small intestine exists soon after birth. The absorptive cells are progressively replaced by more mature-looking cells incapable of taking up large molecules and the rate of absorption is reduced in a linear decline and ceases completely within 24 hr. Surfactant studies in the fetal and neonatal foal. Phospholipids in embryonic lung tissue, pulmonary washings and amniotic fluid were measured to study the development of lyng surfactant in the horse. A significant increase in the concentration of total phospholipids in lung tissue and a concomitant rise in the amount of dipalmitoyl lecithin in amniotic fluid between 100 and 150 days of gestation indicated the initial formation of surfactant in the fetal lung during this period.
Development of pituitary and adrenal glands in the fetal horse. The various cell types in the adult anterior pituitary may be distinguished at the ultrastructural level of the sizes of the secretory granules within the cytoplasm. In the fetal adenohypophysis, with the exception of prolactin-producing cells, all types may be identified after Day 100 of gestation. Anatomy of the placental barrier in the mare. The study of the equine placenta, which began in Venice in 1598, has a long but discontinuous history. Early observations were purely morphological, but new techniques have stimulated a broader and more functional approach. Histological and ultrastructural observations at various stages of pregnancy have shown that the fetal side of the placenta comes to acquire certain features in common with the air-blood barrier of the mammalian lung. These changes may reflect the increasing O2 requirements of the fetus as gestation proceeds.
The ultrastructure of endometrial cups in pregnant mares. Electron microscopy and immunofluorescence techniques were used to study the various epithelial cells in the endometrial cups of ten pregnant mares, and in the uterine epithelium of one non-pregnant mare. Evidence was obtained which suggested that epithelial gland cells within the endometrial cups, as distinct from the hypertrophied decidual-like cells in the cup, may synthesize PMSG. The suggestion does not agree with the findings of other workers in the fetal origin (chorionic girdle cells) of this gonadotrophin.
Levels of LH, prolactin and oestrogens in the serum of post-partum mares. The levels of LH, prolactin and oestrogen were measured by radioimmunoassay in serum obtained from six mares during the post-partum period, and LH was also assayed in blood samples collected at 6-hr intervals from four normal cyclic mares during oestrus and at daily intervals during dioestrus. The concentrations of oestrogen and LH suggested that the mares were having ovulatory cycles during the post-partum period irrespective of behavioural oestrus, and the levels of prolactin seemed to rise in association with probable ovulatory LH peaks. Cytogenetic studies of three equine hybrids. A detailed investigation of testicular meiosis in a mule, a hinny and a Przewalski horse/domestic horse hybrid were made. Abnormalities of pairing were observed in the mule and hinny in most germ cells at the pachytene stage of meiotic prophase, and spermatogenesis was alsmot totally arrested. The fine structure of the glycocalyx of equine spermatozoa: a high-resolution cytochemical study. Equine spermatozoa were obtained from ejaculates of young stallions. The seminal plasma was removed and the sperm pellets washed three times with 0-15 M-NaCl solution before final centrifugation at 4500 g for 15 min. The pellets were fixed in a mixture of 2-5% glutaraldehyde in 0-1 M-cacodylate buffer, pH 7-4, with 0-5% Alcian blue and post-fixed in 1% osmium tetroxide with 1% lanthanum nitrate; other samples were treated with ruthenium red. In experiment I, the effect of a fixed daily photoperiod on the onset of the breeding season was studied in 36 mares from Nov 13, 1973, to June 13, 1974. [The effect of pregnant mare’s serum on the level of K+ ions in the immature rat ovary]. Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotrophin enhanced potassium level in immature rat ovaries in comparison with controls, three hours after intravenous injection. In vivo 42K uptake was also 36% higher (p less than or equal to 0,01) in PMSG primed rat ovaries. This response was specific to the ovary. Experiments are carried out to determine correlation between K+ level and macromolecule biosynthesis.
Periovulatory changes in peripheral plasma progesterone and estrogen concentrations in the mare. Concentrations of progesterone and estrogen were measured in peripheral blood plasma samples from mares around the time of ovulation. Samples were collected every 2 hours from 36 hours before, to 26 hours after, ovulation and assayed by radioimmunoassay. Progesterone concentrations were between 60 and 100 pg/ml for the period 24 hours before ovulation through 8 hours after ovulation. By 10 hours after ovulation, concentrations increased to 140 pg/ml and, by 26 hours after ovulation, reached 346 pg/ml. Plasma estrogen concentrations did not change significantly throughout the same period.
