Effects of cecal fistulation upon nutrient digestion and indicator retention in horses. Three mature Thoroughbred geldings were used in duplicated trials conducted before and after cecal fistulation to determine the effects of the fistulation on nutrient digestion and indicator (Cr2O3 and polyethylene) retention time. There were significant increases (P<.01) in crude fiber and ether extract digestion following fistulation, while dry matter, gross energy, and crude protein digestibilities were not changed significantly. Retention times of Cr2O3 and polyethylene were increased significantly (P<-01 and P<.05, respectively) following fistulation. There were no significant differences...
Glucose-2-T turnover in Shetland ponies. The objectives of the investigation were to determine the utilization rate of glucose-2-T in Shetland ponies and to estimate the extent of tritium recycling into newly formed glucose following a single injection of glucose-2-T. A range of 0.5 to 2.3 and 1.3 to 5.2% recycling was observed for fasted and fed groups of ponies, respectively. The low recycling percentages were not statistically significant (P>.05) from zero except for the 4- and 6-hr. means of the fasted group. Since the recycling percentages for each hourly sample post-injection were not statistically significant, glucose half-lif...
Apparent digestion in various segments of the digestive tract of ponies fed diets with varying roughage-grain ratios. Eleven ponies were fed diets containing 1:0, 3:2 or 1:4 forage-grain ratios for 30 days. Animals were killed 4 hr. after feeding and the entire digestive tracts were removed and segments isolated. Digestion coefficients were calculated for dry matter, protein, available carbohydrate (ACHO) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) by Cr2O3-nutrient ratio for seven segments of the gut.
The major site of ACHO and protein digestion was prececal; whereas, the major sites of NDF digestion were the colon and cecum regardless of the hay:grain ratio. Therefore the relative importance of digestion in the lo...
Mares’ milk composition as related to “foal heat” scours. A CONDITION known as “foal heat” scours often develops in young foals during the mare's first estrum, which usually commences about 9 days post-partum. Various causative factors that have been suggested, although not scientifically established, include: (1) Changes in milk composition during the heat period (Henry and Morrison, 1923; Linton, 1931; Holmes and Lindquist, 1947; Doll, 1956), (2) ingestation of genital discharge (Sohnie, 1910; Udall, 1943; Siegmond, 1961), (3) ingestation of straw, feces, grass and other foreign matter (Udall, 1943) and (4) overloading of the foal's digestive t...
