Muscle fibre composition and glycogen depletion in horses competing in an endurance ride. An investigation into fibre composition and glycogen depletion pattern within the middle gluteal of 16 horses participating in an 80 km endurance ride was carried out. Although the proportion of slow twitch high oxidative (ST) fibres in the horses varied between 7 and 38 per cent, it was found that the horses with the highest proportion of these fibres usually had the best performance records. A biochemical study of the Arab Horse Society’s marathon race. Blood samples were taken before and after a cross country race over the marathon distance of 42 km. There was a rise in blood glucose and plasma free fatty acids and glycerol associated with a rise in plasma cortisol and glucagon but the fall in insulin was not significant (P > 0.05). Plasma potassium and albumin concentrations increased, calcium decreased and there was no change in sodium or bicarbonate concentrations. Bicipital bursitis in a mare. A case of bicipital bursitis in a six-year-old mare is described. The horse was presented with acute lameness, pyrexia and hot swelling over the right shoulder region. Although antibiotic treatment relieved these signs, a firm cold swelling remained which had to be removed by surgical resection and drainage.
Intravenous anaesthesia in horses after xylazine premedication. The effects of combining large doses of xylazine (1.1 mg per kg intravenously) with ketamine, methohexitone and thiopentone were studied in four experimental ponies. Onset of anaesthesia was more delayed after ketamine than after the barbiturates. Assessment of smoothness of induction and recovery indicated that all three combinations were effective and acceptable. Injection of xylazine was followed by atrioventricular (A-V) block which could be prevented by the prior administration of atropine. Grassland management for horses. The pasture needs for horses as compared to those for farm livestock are reviewed. The differing preferences of various types of grasses and other plants, and the patterns of grazing seen on"horse-sick" pastures, are discussed. Suggestions for practical management include frequent collection and removal of droppings, the use of grazing by cattle, adequate rest from horses and the application of cattle manure. Traumatic balanoposthitis in a yearling Appaloosa colt. A case of balanoposthitis involving injury to a yearling colt's penis and prepuce is described. Details are given of the Vennerhalm or reefing operation which was used to relieve the penile prolapse and paraphimosis accompanying the condition.
Mites in “head shaker” horses. It is reported that in Australia, the finding of Psoroptes cuniculi (Delafond) (including its synonym P. hippotis Raill. & Henry) in the ears of head-shaking horses is relatively common among thoroughbred racing horses in southern Queensland. A survey of the ears of horses undergoing theatre surgery showed that about 20% of the horses were infested.
Ultrasonic treatment of musculoskeletal conditions in the horse, dog and cat. A beam of pulsed ultrasound was used to treat musculoskeletal disorders in 53 horses and 143 dogs and cats. The cases were spread over seven years and 533 separate insonations were made. Doses, which varied according to the lesion, ranged from 0.2 to 3 watts/cm2 for five minutes in each treatment. In 63 per cent of the cases, rapid and complete resolution occurred.
