Proliferative Optic Neuropathy in Horses. An asymptomatic, ophthalmoscopically visible proliferation affected the optic disc and nerve of two aged horses. The lesion consisted of an accumulation of foamy cells, histologically akin to fat cells, which contained an unidentified lipid-like material. The affected area and its environs were permeated by tortuous, thickened blood vessels with heavy deposits of collagen in their walls.
