Modulation of allergy incidence in icelandic horses is associated with a change in IL-4-producing T cells.
International archives of allergy and immunology    July 2, 2007   Volume 144, Issue 4 325-337 doi: 10.1159/000106459
Hamza E, Doherr MG, Bertoni G, Jungi TW, Marti E.Equine insect bite hypersensitivity (IBH) is an immediate-type hypersensitivity reaction provoked by insect-derived allergens. Icelandic horses living in Iceland do not have IBH due to absence of relevant insects, but acquire it at high frequency after being imported to mainland Europe. In contrast, their offspring born in mainland Europe has reduced IBH incidence. T helper 1 (Th1) and Th2 cells and cytokines were determined in Icelandic horses born in Iceland and on the continent and which either have IBH or are healthy. Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from these horses wer...
Immunocontraception and increased longevity in equids.
Zoo biology    July 1, 2007   Volume 26, Issue 4 237-244 doi: 10.1002/zoo.20109
Kirkpatrick JF, Turner A.Intensive population management by means of fertility control has been shown to change the age profile of a wild horse herd. The primary change has been an increase in the number and percent of older animals, as expected, but also the appearance of new and older age classes. An examination of direct effects of fertility control on two groups of treated animals shows a significant increase in longevity over non-treated animals that is associated with contraceptive treatment. The mean age at death (MAD) was calculated for 128 wild horses for which precise birth and death dates were known, includ...
Molecular evidence for transplacental transmission of Theileria equi from carrier mares to their apparently healthy foals.
Veterinary parasitology    June 29, 2007   Volume 148, Issue 2 130-136 doi: 10.1016/j.vetpar.2007.05.017
Allsopp MT, Lewis BD, Penzhorn BL.The intra-erythrocytic parasite Theileria equi is one of two tick-transmitted causative agents of equine piroplasmosis. Piroplasms of T. equi can be transmitted across the equine placenta and once a horse is infected, it appears to remain a lifelong carrier, since anti-theilerial drugs suppress but do not eliminate the parasite. Carrier mares may transmit the organism to their offspring and this may result in abortion or neonatal piroplasmosis, but observations by some researchers suggest that foals may be born as carriers yet remain apparently healthy. Using a T. equi-specific oligonucleotide...

[Diversity and dynamics of bacteriophages in horse feces].
Mikrobiologiia    June 23, 2007   Volume 76, Issue 2 271-278
Kulikova EE, Isaeva AS, Rotkina AS, Manykin AA, Letarov AV.The complex cellulolytic microbial community of the horse intestines is a convenient model for studying the ecology of bacteriophages in natural habitats. Unlike the rumen of the ruminants, this community of the equine large intestine is not subjected to digestion. The inner conditions of the horse gut are much more stable in comparison to other mammals, due to the fact that the horse diet remains almost unchanged and the intervals between food consumption and defecation are much shorter than the whole digestive cycle. The results of preliminary analysis of the structure and dynamics of the vi...
Population sub-structuring among Trypanosoma evansi stocks.
Parasitology research    June 22, 2007   Volume 101, Issue 5 1215-1224 doi: 10.1007/s00436-007-0603-y
Njiru ZK, Constantine CC.To investigate the population genetic structure of Trypanosoma evansi from domesticated animals, we have analysed 112 stocks from camels, buffaloes, cattle and horses using the tandemly repeated coding sequence (MORF2) and minisatellite markers 292 and cysteine-rich acidic integral membrane protein (CRAM). We recorded a total of six alleles at the MORF2 locus, seven at 292 and 12 at the CRAM loci. Nei's genetic distance showed reduced allelic diversity between buffaloes and cattle stocks (1.2) as compared to the diversity between camels and buffaloes (3.75) and camels and cattle stock (1.69). ...
Vaginal lactic acid bacteria in the mare: evaluation of the probiotic potential of native Lactobacillus spp. and Enterococcus spp. strains.
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek    June 21, 2007   Volume 93, Issue 1-2 71-78 doi: 10.1007/s10482-007-9180-4
Fraga M, Perelmuter K, Delucchi L, Cidade E, Zunino P.Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are important members of the human vaginal microbiota and their presence is considered beneficial. However, little is known about native vaginal bacteria in other animal species such as the horse. The aim of this work was to quantify the vaginal lactic acid bacteria and lactobacilli of mares and to establish if selected equine vaginal lactic acid bacteria, particularly Lactobacillus and Enterococcus spp. strains, could exhibit potential as probiotics. The vaginal lactic acid bacteria and lactobacilli of 26 mares were quantified by plate counts. Five strains (three La...
Are 6-month-old foals sensitive to dam’s influence?
Developmental psychobiology    June 20, 2007   Volume 49, Issue 5 514-521 doi: 10.1002/dev.20225
Henry S, Briefer S, Richard-Yris MA, Hausberger M.A recent study has shown that gently handling dams in front of their few days old foals may strongly influence the development of human-foal relationships. In the present study, we test whether 6-month-old foals remain sensitive to their dams' influence. The study was performed on 16 foal-mare dyads, with half of the mares receiving positive contacts from the experimenter in presence of their 6-month-old foals (n = 8) whereas the other mares were not handled (n = 8). All foals were tested 15 and 30-35 days later under various conditions (reaction to a motionless human, approach test, saddle-pa...
Temperament in preweanling horses: development of reactions to humans and novelty, and startle responses.
Developmental psychobiology    June 20, 2007   Volume 49, Issue 5 501-513 doi: 10.1002/dev.20233
Lansade L, Bouissou MF, Boivin X.The purpose of this study was to investigate the development and the stability across situations and over time of three temperament traits in young foals: propensity to react to humans, propensity to react to novelty, and propensity to react to suddenness. In a comparative study, we examined the reactions of animals in three independent groups (N = 27) tested at 3, 12, and 24 weeks of age, respectively. We observed that human avoidance and novel object approach behaviors are quasi inexistent in the group tested at 3 weeks, but are more and more present in the groups tested at subsequent ages. ...
Cetirizine in horses: pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics following repeated oral administration.
Veterinary journal (London, England : 1997)    June 19, 2007   Volume 177, Issue 2 242-249 doi: 10.1016/j.tvjl.2007.03.026
Olsén L, Bondesson U, Broström H, Tjälve H, Ingvast-Larsson C.The pharmacokinetics of the histamine H(1)-antagonist cetirizine and its effect on histamine-induced cutaneous wheal formation were studied in six healthy horses following repeated oral administration. After three consecutive administrations of cetirizine (0.2 mg/kg body weight, bw) every 12h, the trough plasma concentration of cetirizine was 16+/-4 ng/mL (mean+/-SD) and the wheal formation was inhibited by 45+/-23%. After four additional administrations of cetirizine (0.4 mg/kg bw) every 12 h, the trough plasma concentration was 48+/-15 ng/mL and the wheal formation was inhibited by 68+/-11%....
Aging enhances a mechanically-induced reduction in tendon strength by an active process involving matrix metalloproteinase activity.
Aging cell    June 18, 2007   Volume 6, Issue 4 547-556 doi: 10.1111/j.1474-9726.2007.00307.x
Dudhia J, Scott CM, Draper ER, Heinegård D, Pitsillides AA, Smith RK.Age-associated and degenerative loss of functional integrity in soft tissues develops from effects of cumulative and subtle changes in their extracellular matrix (ECM). The highly ordered tendon ECM provides the tissue with its tensile strength during loading. As age and exercise collide in the high incidence of tendinopathies, we hypothesized that aged tendons fail due to cumulative damage resulting from a combination of diminished matrix repair and fragmentation of ECM proteins induced by prolonged cyclical loading, and that this is an active cell-mediated process. We developed an equine ten...

Filamentous fungi identification was achieved to the genus level; yeast colonies were identified for macro-micromorphologic and physiological characteristics. Results: Eighty-one donkeys out of 102 (79.4%) were positive for fungi; 47/102 (46.1%) had positive cultures from both ey...
Morphometric classification of Spanish thoroughbred stallion sperm heads.
Animal reproduction science    June 13, 2007   Volume 103, Issue 3-4 374-378 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2007.06.001
Hidalgo M, Rodríguez I, Dorado J, Soler C.This work used semen samples collected from 12 stallions and assessed for sperm morphometry by the Sperm Class Analyzer (SCA) computer-assisted system. A discriminant analysis was performed on the morphometric data from that sperm to obtain a classification matrix for sperm head shape. Thereafter, we defined six types of sperm head shape. Classification of sperm head by this method obtained a globally correct assignment of 90.1%. Moreover, significant differences (p<0.05) were found between animals for all the sperm head morphometric parameters assessed.
Effective priming of foals born to immune dams against influenza by a canarypox-vectored recombinant influenza H3N8 vaccine.
Journal of comparative pathology    June 7, 2007   Volume 137 Suppl 1 S76-S80 doi: 10.1016/j.jcpa.2007.04.016
Minke JM, Toulemonde CE, Dinic S, Cozette V, Cullinane A, Audonnet JC.A classical limitation of early life immunization is the interference by maternally derived antibodies, which are known to inhibit the immune response to modified-live and killed vaccines. Several studies have convincingly shown that even minute amounts of maternally derived antibodies against equine influenza can strongly interfere with successful vaccination of foals born to immune mares. In this study we evaluated the response of foals born to vaccinated mares to immunization with a canarypox-vectored recombinant vaccine against equine influenza virus H3N8. The recombinant vaccine was able ...
Negative effect of estradiol on luteinizing hormone throughout the ovulatory luteinizing hormone surge in mares.
Biology of reproduction    June 6, 2007   Volume 77, Issue 3 543-550 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod.107.061705
Ginther OJ, Utt MD, Beg MA, Gastal EL, Gastal MO.The negative effect of estradiol-17beta (E2) on LH, based on exogenous E2 treatments, and the reciprocal effect of LH on endogenous E2, based on hCG treatments, were studied throughout the ovulatory follicular wave during a total of 103 equine estrous cycles in seven experiments. An initial study developed E2 treatment protocols that approximated physiologic E2 concentrations during the estrous cycle. On Day 13 (ovulation = Day 0), when basal concentrations of E2 and LH precede the ovulatory surges, exogenous E2 significantly depressed LH concentrations to below basal levels. Ablation of all f...

Lameness, response to joint flexion, synovial eff...
Immune responsiveness in the neonatal period.
Journal of comparative pathology    June 4, 2007   Volume 137 Suppl 1 S27-S31 doi: 10.1016/j.jcpa.2007.04.008
Morein B, Blomqvist G, Hu K.The maintenance of pregnancy requires suppression of the maternal immune system which would naturally recognize the developing fetus as an allograft and seek to destroy it by mounting a Th1 regulated cytotoxic immune response. During pregnancy a range of soluble factors are produced by the placenta which switch maternal immune regulation towards a protective Th2 phenotype. These factors also influence the developing fetal immune system and all newborns initially have an immunological milieu skewed towards Th2 immunity. Vaccination during the neonatal period must therefore overcome the dual cha...
