Investigation into the heredity of congenital lateral patellar (sub)luxation in the Shetland pony.
The veterinary quarterly    January 1, 1987   Volume 9, Issue 1 1-8 doi: 10.1080/01652176.1987.9694070
Hermans WA, Kersjes AW, van der Mey GJ, Dik KJ.A breeding experiment was carried out in a group of Shetland ponies in order to investigate the heredity of congenital lateral patellar (sub)luxation. A breeding herd was established and consisted of stallions and mares acquired at different times. Some were free from, and others were affected by lateral patellar (sub)luxation in either one or both femoropatellar joints. Over a period of 20 years, 49 foals were born from different mating combinations. Some offspring were free from the defect and others showed the abnormality. Though the number of foals bred during the experiment is rather smal...
Apneic oxygenation in anesthetized ponies and horses.
Veterinary research communications    January 1, 1987   Volume 11, Issue 3 281-291 doi: 10.1007/BF00570926
Blaze CA, Robinson NE.Apneic oxygenation was studied in six ponies for 30 minutes, and six horses for 10 minutes. Arterial blood was sampled at regular intervals for measurement of oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions (PaO2 and PaCO2) and calculation of alveolar-arterial oxygen tension difference (PAO2-PaO2). In both groups of animals, PaO2 decreased rapidly during the first 3 minutes of apnea, then more slowly. Although the mean value was above 100 mmHg at 10 minutes, there was considerable inter-animal variability. Before apnea, PAO2-PaO2 was slightly, but not significantly, larger in horses than in ponies and incr...
Ventilatory and blood gas dynamics at onset and offset of exercise in the pony.
Journal of applied physiology (Bethesda, Md. : 1985)    January 1, 1987   Volume 62, Issue 1 141-148 doi: 10.1152/jappl.1987.62.1.141
Powers SK, Beadle RE, Thompson D, Lawler J.The purpose of these experiments was to examine the temporal pattern of arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) to assess the relationship between alveolar ventilation (VA) and CO2 return to the lung at the onset and offset of submaximal treadmill exercise. Five healthy ponies exercised for 8 min at two work rates: 50 m/min 6% grade and 70 m/min 12% grade. PaCO2 decreased (P less than 0.05) below resting values within 1 min after commencement of exercise at both work rates and reached a nadir at 90 s. PaCO2 decreased maximally by 2.5 and 3.5 Torr at the low and moderate rate, respectively. Aft...

Comparison of progesterone and progesterone + oestrogen on total and specific uterine proteins in pony mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 335-342
McDowell KJ, Sharp DC, Grubaugh W.Eight ovariectomized pony mares were used to test the effect of various doses of progesterone (0, 50, 150, 450 mg/day, in oil, i.m., for 10 days) on progesterone and LH in the peripheral circulation, and on total protein and uteroferrin in uterine secretions. Progesterone increased uteroferrin, but there were no differences amongst doses of progesterone. Progesterone treatment decreased LH, and tended to increase total protein. Eighteen ovariectomized mares were given vehicle, oestradiol (10 mg/day, in oil, i.m.), progesterone or progesterone + oestradiol for 28 days. Both the last two steroid...

[Establishment of a re-entrant ileo-cecal fistula in Equidae].
Annales de recherches veterinaires. Annals of veterinary research    January 1, 1987   Volume 18, Issue 1 35-41
Brugère H, Castellani G, Boxebeld A, Wolter R.A re-entrant cannulation of the digestive tract was performed in Equidae (ponies and donkeys) between the distal extremity of the ileum and the base of the caecum. The operative technique was conceived to avoid risks of infection of the peritoneal cavity: the openings of the ileum and of the caecum were achieved only after the closure of the abdominal wall incision. Two donkeys were still alive ten months after the operation. This method can provide a convenient model for digestibility studies in Equidae, particularly for assessment of the pre-caecal digestibility.
Oxytocin stimulation of plasma 15-keto-13,14-dihydro prostaglandin F-2 alpha during the oestrous cycle and early pregnancy in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 253-260
Goff AK, Pontbriand D, Sirois J.In Exp. 1, 4 mares were given oxytocin intravenously (10 i.u./500 kg body wt) daily between Days 9 and 14 (Day 0 = day of ovulation) when pregnant and on Days 9-14, 16, 18, 20 when non-pregnant (not inseminated). In the non-pregnant mares the increase in plasma PGFM response to oxytocin was greater at Day 13 (235 +/- 54 pg/ml) than at Day 11 (113 +/- 38 pg/ml; P less than 0.05) and was maximum at Day 16. However, these animals did not return to oestrus and plasma progesterone did not fall below 4 ng/ml. There was no significant increase in response to oxytocin between Days 9 and 14 in the preg...
Electrophysiological studies on atrial fibrillation.
Heart and vessels. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 2 32-39
Moore EN, Spear JF.We tested the multiple-wavelet hypothesis by studying the initiation and maintenance of atrial fibrillation in normal mules, horses, cows, calves, and goats. Persistence of atrial fibrillation in animals with a large atrial mass was compared with results in adult goats and calves having a smaller atrial mass. Atrial stimulation in clinically normal cows, mules, calves, and goats was accomplished using an intra-atrial stimulating catheter with rapid atrial pacing (30/s). Once initiated, atrial fibrillation persisted for 95,120,125 min, 3 days, and 8 weeks in five adult cows, respectively. In co...
Practicalities of insemination of mares with deep-frozen semen.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 121-125
Müller Z.From 341 stallions examined for sperm quality, 61% of warm-blooded stallions and 47% of cold-blooded stallions fulfilled the pre-existing criteria for their occasional use in insemination. From these stallions 51-71% of acceptable ejaculates were obtained. Altogether 959 mares were inseminated in an average of 1.36 oestrous cycles. For the insemination of one mare in one oestrous cycle on the average 2.2 insemination doses were used. These inseminations were carried out by 41 cattle insemination technicians trained in mare insemination. A pregnancy rate of 56% and a foaling rate of 48% were ac...
Plasma endotoxin levels in horses subjected to carbohydrate induced laminitis.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1987   Volume 19, Issue 1 25-28 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1987.tb02571.x
Sprouse RF, Garner HE, Green EM.Thirteen (65 per cent) of 20 horses subjected to carbohydrate overload developed Obel Grade 3 lameness within 56 h. Increases in plasma endotoxin from control levels of less than 0.1 ng/litre to values ranging from 2.4 to 81.53 ng/litre were measured in 11 (85 per cent) of 13 horses during the onset of Obel Grade 3 lameness. Obel Grade 3 lameness was associated with rises in plasma Gram-negative endotoxin levels in 11 (92 per cent) of 12 horses. Two peak increases separated by 16 h were verified in five (45 per cent) of 11 horses that exhibited both endotoxaemia and Obel Grade 3 lameness. The ...
Development and survival of free-living stages of equine strongyles under laboratory conditions.
Veterinary parasitology    January 1, 1987   Volume 23, Issue 1-2 121-133 doi: 10.1016/0304-4017(87)90030-6
Mfitilodze MW, Hutchinson GW.In a series of laboratory studies the optimum conditions for the development and survival of the free-living stages of strongyle parasites occurring in horses in tropical north Queensland were determined. No differences in behaviour were noted between the strongyle species. Development to the infective stage occurred only between 10 and 35 degrees C. The rate was affected by temperature, taking 15-24 days and 3 days, respectively, at the lowest and highest temperatures for the developing stages to reach the infective third stage. Yields of infective larvae were very low outside the range 20-33...
Effects of age, season and active immunization against estrogen on serum prolactin concentrations in stallions.
Domestic animal endocrinology    January 1, 1987   Volume 4, Issue 1 17-22 doi: 10.1016/0739-7240(87)90034-8
Thompson DL, Johnson L.Prolactin concentrations in stallion serum were measured by radioimmunoassay based on antiserum generated against equine prolactin and radioiodinated canine prolactin. Prolactin concentrations in serum collected from 152 stallions at a slaughterhouse were higher (P less than .01) in summer than in winter (5.7 +/- .15 vs 2.0 +/- .17 ng/ml). Moreover, there was an effect of age (P less than .02) in the analysis of variance; there was no interaction between age and season. In general, prolactin concentrations increased with age up to 3 to 5 years. Samples of serum collected from five control and ...
Genetic studies of neuraxonal dystrophy in the Morgan.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 1 109-113
Beech J, Haskins M.A naturally occurring disease condition, neuraxonal dystrophy, was identified in 27 male and 15 female Morgans, many of which were closely related. Five-generation pedigrees were constructed for 33 of these horses and were compared with those for 29 randomly selected age- and sex-matched Morgans. Their mean coefficient of inbreeding was not statistically different (P greater than 0.1, 1 tailed t test; P less than 0.001, median test). Breeding of 2 severely affected and 2 normal stallions to 2 severely affected, 3 mildly affected, and 6 normal mares produced 10 mildly affected, 8 suspect affect...
[Corrosion anatomical studies of the blood vessel system of the mare ovary].
Tierarztliche Praxis    January 1, 1987   Volume 15, Issue 2 181-184
König HE, Ries R.The ovary of the mare is vascularized by two branches of the A. ovarica, which differ in diameter. They take a characteristic course in this organ. Near the ovulation fossa several branches of 1st and 2nd class leave the A. ovarica to provide the functional structures. These vessels are formed like a corkscrew. At the veins and its ramifications there are sphincter-like structures which support the venous valves. They are of haemodynamic importance for the different phases of the functional structures.
Relationship of age and season and consumption of Senecio vulgaris to LH/hCG receptors in the stallion testis.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 59-65
Evans JW, Stanfield J, Hoffman LS, Slaussen C.Testes were obtained from 70 colts and stallions and were pooled according to age (4 months to 23 years) to determine the relationship of age to LH/hCG receptor kinetics. The receptor concentration (Rt) increased from 0.069 x 10(-11) M/mg crude membrane fraction (CMF) for the 4-14-month pools to 0.464 x 10(-11) M for the 2-3-year-old pools. A 10-fold increase in testicular size also occurred, and so the total number of receptors per testis was significantly increased. A further increase to 1.237 x 10(-11) M/mg CMF was observed for stallions older than 5 years. No differences in binding affinit...
Pharmacological manipulation of sexual behaviour in stallions.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 45-49
McDonnell SM, Garcia MC, Kenney RM.Series of experiments and clinical trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of psychoneurotropic agents on sexual behaviour of stallions. The benzodiazepine derivative, diazepam (Valium), effectively reversed experimentally suppressed precopulatory arousal and response. Diazepam treatment also blocked the negative effect of novel environment on sexual response. The dibenzazepines imipramine and clomipramine induced erection, masturbation, and ejaculation in the absence of a sexual stimulus.
Dietary molybdenum as a putative copper antagonist in the horse.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1987   Volume 19, Issue 1 50-54 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1987.tb02581.x
Strickland K, Smith F, Woods M, Mason J.Four horses were stabled and fed a diet of hay ad libitum, and 2 kg oats per animal per day, for a month. The basic diet was then supplemented with molybdenum, at a rate of 20 mg/kg dry matter for 4.5 months. For one month of this period the diet was supplemented also with sulphur at a rate of 1.2 g/kg dry matter. Analyses of jugular blood samples, obtained at intervals varying between two and 20 days, showed no evidence of a decline in total plasma copper or of an increased proportion of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) insoluble copper in plasma over this period. In separate studies, two other hor...
The effects of ammonium sulfate and acid on horse and human serum butyrylcholinesterase (EC 3.1.1.8).
Comparative biochemistry and physiology. B, Comparative biochemistry    January 1, 1987   Volume 88, Issue 1 153-156 doi: 10.1016/0305-0491(87)90094-0
Miller SK.1. Results of laboratory experiments which compared horse and human serum butyrylcholinesterase (EC 3.1.1.8) with respect to their acid inactivation and ammonium sulfate protection show: 2. Horse serum butyrylcholinesterase is more resistant to inactivation at pH 3.0 than human serum butyrylcholinesterase. 3. The loss of activity at pH 3.0 for both horse and human butyrylcholinesterase does not follow first order kinetics. 4. Both human and horse serum butyrylcholinesterase are protected from pH 3.0 inactivation by ammonium sulfate concentrations up to 33% saturation (1.37 M).
Cardiovascular and respiratory measurements in awake and isoflurane-anesthetized horses.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1987   Volume 48, Issue 1 7-12
Steffey EP, Dunlop CI, Farver TB, Woliner MJ, Schultz LJ.Circulatory and respiratory function was monitored in nonmedicated, spontaneously breathing horses (n = 7) immediately before, during, and 1 hour after 85 +/- 4.1 (X +/- SEM) minutes of constant 1.57% isoflurane in O2 anesthesia. Comparison of values during anesthesia with those obtained while horses were awake revealed a significant (P less than 0.05) decrease in arterial blood pressure that was related to a slight, but insignificant, decrease in cardiac output and peripheral vascular resistance. Although isoflurane anesthesia and recumbency resulted in a significant (P less than 0.05) decrea...
[The morphology and innervation of the levator muscles of the ribs in the dog, cat, horse, and pig].
Acta anatomica    January 1, 1987   Volume 129, Issue 2 131-135
Frewein J, Buff E.In the anatomical literature there are inconsistencies in the description of the levatores costarum muscles in man and in the domestic animals, and their innervation either by the dorsal or the ventral branches of the thoracic nerves. Therefore we studied the form, structure and, with the aid of the dissecting microscope, the innervation of these muscles in 7 dogs, 8 cats, 5 horses and 12 pigs. In the dog, cat and horse, mm. levatores costarum are present from the second to the last rib. In the pig, these muscles are present from the second to the 15th rib, even in individuals with 16 pairs of...
Patterns of oxytocin secretion during the oestrous cycle of the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 245-252
Tetzke TA, Ismail S, Mikuckis G, Evans JW.From a group of 11 cyclic mares, blood samples were collected at 3-min intervals for 2 h and at 15-min intervals for an additional 6 h during four stages of the oestrous cycle. Mean plasma oxytocin concentrations (pg/ml, LSM +/- se) were greater on Day 15 after ovulation (169.9 +/- 17.6) than on Day 0 (82.6 +/- 17.6; P less than 0.01), Day 3 (97.2 +/- 20.4, P less than 0.01) and Day 7 after ovulation (104.0 +/- 25.0, P less than 0.05). Oxytocin was secreted in a pulsatile manner throughout the oestrous cycle, with short (0-29 min), medium (30-89 min) and long (greater than 90 min) duration rhy...
Distribution of spermatozoa in the mare’s oviduct.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 79-86
Boyle MS, Cran DG, Allen WR, Hunter RH.The morphology of the uterotubal junction (UTJ) and caudal isthmus during the peri-ovulatory period, and the distribution of spermatozoa within the region, were studied in 10 Pony mares. The proximal tip of the uterine horn and caudal 1-2 cm of the isthmus were removed during oestrus or shortly after ovulation from animals mated or artificially inseminated within the previous 24 h. The tissues were incised longitudinally and fixed for scanning electron microscopy. Analysis of micrographs showed deep longitudinal and oedematous folds in the preovulatory samples. After ovulation, much of the fol...
[Histogenesis of granulation tissue in wound healing by second intention in horses and cattle].
Veterinarno-meditsinski nauki    January 1, 1987   Volume 24, Issue 1 72-79
Dinev D, Dzhurov A.An experiment in comparative developmental aspect was carried out with 5 horses and 5 cattle having a total of 60 skin and muscular wounds. Light microscopic studies on hematoxylin-eosin stained preparations revealed that the dystrophic changes in the underlying tissues were more strongly manifested in horses. This had to be taken into consideration in the surgical treatment of wounds with this animal species. The basic differences comprised the better manifested leukocytic reaction in horses and the more strongly expressed processes of growth and differentiation on the part of the connective ...
Effect of pulsatile gonadotrophin release on mean serum LH and FSH in peri-parturient mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 635-640
Hines KK, Fitzgerald BP, Loy RG.Changes in the pattern of LH and FSH in serum were studied in 6 mares foaling during the summer. Samples were collected frequently (every 15 min) for 24 h twice before foaling, -33 +/- 2 and -12 +/- 2 days, and for 12 h after foaling, on Day 0 and Day 4. Simultaneous pulses of FSH and LH were observed before foaling (r2 = 0.99). Before foaling, gonadotrophin pulses were infrequent (6 in 264 h of observation). On the day of foaling, LH and FSH pulse frequency increased (P less than 0.005) with 2-4 pulses per mare. The amplitudes of pulses of LH and FSH were higher before parturition than for th...
