Enterotoxemia in two foals. Two Quarter Horse foals from different premises died from enterotoxemia. Clostridium perfringens toxins alpha and beta were demonstrated in the foal's intestines by mouse protection tests. Clostridium perfringens type C was isolated from the intestines of each foal. Histologic examination revealed hemorrhage, necrosis, and massive numbers of C perfringens.
Direct colorimetric determination of serum arginase in various domestic animals. A direct colorimetric method for the determination of serum arginase activity in various domestic animals is described. Serum arginase activity in healthy mature dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep, and pigs ranged from 0 to 14 IU/L. Serum arginase activity increased considerably in these animals during experimental hepatic damage induced by oral administration of carbon tetrachloride.
Isolation of rotavirus from foals with diarrhoea. A rotavirus, morphologically similar to other known rotaviruses, was demonstrated in the faeces of 5 foals with diarrhoea on two properties. Four of these 5 samples produced specific intracytoplasmic fluorescence in cell culture when reacted with calf rotavirus antiserum conjugate. Sixteen affected foals from both properties were depressed, did not suckle and became recumbent. [Radiological and clinical considerations on navicular disease (author’s transl)]. The radiological and clinical interpretation of alterations of the navicular bone, the interaction of radiological and clinical symptoms in relation to the age of the animal, the influence of work-load on this interaction and the possibility of predicting navicular disease at an early stage are discussed. Studies on cross protection induced in calves by rotaviruses of calves, children and foals. Inoculation at birth with a live attenuated strain of a bovine rotavirus isolated in the USA (scourvax-reo) induced protection in five gnotobiotic calves seven to 21 days later against a UK isolate of pathogenic bovine rotavirus. Effects of endometrial biopsy, uterine culture, and cervical dilatation on the equine estrous cycle. In 10 mares, lysis of the corpus luteum was induced by endometrial biopsy and culture on day 4 after estrus, as evidenced by a sharp decline in serum progesterone concentration and a shortened interestrous interval. Estrus following the manipulations was prolonged. Endometrial biopsy and culture on days 1 and 3 after estrus or manually dilating the cervix on day 4 after estrus also decreased the serum progesterone concentration (within 24--48 hr after manipulation), shortened diestrus, and prolonged the subsequent estrus. In two separate experiments food intakes and heart rates were monitored in New Forest and Welsh filly foals maintained at constant weight (by energy restriction) or allowed to grow normally for 180 (New Forest) or 147 (Welsh) days. against intestinal nematodes (3, 4, 6). There are
two reports of field trials with CBZ (2, 5), and
although a large number of horses were involved,
the efficacies reported were for a restricted
number of nematodes. Recently, CBZ paste was
administered to horses in another field trial and

Isolation of a gonadotropin (PMEG) from pregnant mare endometrial cups: comparison with PMSG. The gonadotropin (PMEG) in pregnant mare endometrial cups was purified and compared to pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG). Purification methodology applicable to PMSG was employed. In vivo and in vitro assays for FSH and LH were used to evaluate PMEG preparations. In all cases, lower activities (11-54%) were observed with PMEG compared to PMSG. Limb skin thermometry in racehorses. Skin temperature measurements were recorded of the legs of 13 racehorses between 2 and 5 years old. The normal limb temperature patterns are described. In over 90 per cent of the normal horses the difference between contralateral limbs was less than 1 degree C, but in the remainder differences of up to 8 degree C were recorded due to the excessive cooling of one limb. Blood and tissue content of the iso-enzymes of lactate dehydrogenase in the thoroughbred. The occasions, position and relative concentration of LDH iso-enzymes in the blood tissues of the thoroughbred horse were determined. Locomotor muscles possess a high concentration of LDH 5 whereas non-locomotor muscles have a low concentration of this iso-enzyme.
