Topic:Clinical Study

Clinical studies in equine research involve the systematic investigation of health and disease in horses through structured scientific methods. These studies aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of treatments, understand disease mechanisms, and improve veterinary care practices. Clinical studies can include randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and case-control studies. They may focus on various aspects such as pharmacokinetics, therapeutic interventions, and diagnostic techniques. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the design, implementation, and findings of clinical studies in equine medicine, providing insights into their impact on horse health and veterinary practices.
Determination of the center of pressure of the hoofs of the forelimbs of horses standing on a flat level surface.
Acta anatomica    January 1, 1993   Volume 146, Issue 2-3 175-178 doi: 10.1159/000147441
Colahan P, Lindsey E, Nunier C.The pressure exerted on a flat level surface by recently trimmed, unshod hoofs of the front limbs of 23 sound, adult horses was measured using pressure-sensitive film and a specially built cassette. The horses were tranquilized and stood with one foot on the 2.9-cm-thick cassette and the other on a block of equal height. The hoofs were observed for motion during the measurement, and the developed film was examined for improper alignment of the film or slipping of the hoof. The center of pressure was located using the method of weighted proportions of Barrey. This static measurement system with...
Nutrient utilisation by the hindlimb of thoroughbred horses at rest.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1993   Volume 25, Issue 1 41-44 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1993.tb02899.x
Pethick DW, Rose RJ, Bryden WL, Gooden JM.Nutrient uptake by the hindlimb was investigated utilising the arteriovenous difference technique in 5 Thoroughbred horses fed to maintenance a diet of 100% roughage or 52% oat grain and 48% roughage. Arterial blood was obtained from a catheter inserted into the carotid artery while venous blood was simultaneously collected from a catheter placed into the iliac vein via the medial saphenous vein. The arteriovenous difference for glucose was significant and represented a mean extraction of 10 +/- 1% with no effect of diet. If fully oxidised, glucose uptake (corrected for lactate and pyruvate ar...
Plasma potassium measurement with a new reagent carrier (Reflotron): comparison with ion-selective electrode results.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1993   Volume 54, Issue 1 127-129 doi: 10.1016/0034-5288(93)90022-8
Braun JP, Carstensen CA.Potassium concentrations were measured in the plasma of 336 animals with a new reagent carrier (Reflotron; Boehringer Mannheim) K+ and with an ion-specific electrode system: results were highly correlated (r = 0.991; y = 0.993 x + 0.02) and day-to-day coefficient of variation of the new reagent measurements was lower than 2.5 per cent. This system offers a good alternative to the ion-selective electrode system for plasma potassium measurement in veterinary practice.
Technique for long-term right dorsal colon fistulization in ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1993   Volume 54, Issue 1 183-184
Wilkins PA, Lowe JE.Right dorsal colon fistulas, 2.5 cm in diameter, were created in 2 healthy ponies, using a 2-stage surgical procedure. The first stage consisted of resection of portions of the 16th and 17th ribs on the right side, followed by surgical creation of a 6- to 8-cm-diameter adhesion between the right dorsal colon and the body wall. Fistulas were created approximately 2 weeks after the first surgery by sharp dissection through the adhesion into the lumen of the colon. The fistulas have been satisfactorily maintained for > 2 years by de Pezzer catheters (45 F). Ponies with fistulas have been used ...
An investigation of injection techniques for local analgesia of the equine distal tarsus and proximal metatarsus.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1993   Volume 25, Issue 1 30-35 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1993.tb02897.x
Dyson SJ, Romero JM.A positive radiographic contrast agent was injected into the tarsometatarsal (TMT) joints of both hindlimbs of 10 horses. Lateromedial radiographic views were obtained at 5, 15 and 30 mins after injection. Injection was successful in 19 of 20 limbs. Communication between the centrodistal (CD) and TMT joints was identified in 7 limbs (35%). Contrast agent extended around the tendons of tibialis cranialis (TC) and fibularis tertius (FT) in 18 limbs, and in 7 limbs some contrast entered the tarsal sheath. Slight to moderate plantar and/or distal extension of contrast agent was identified in 13 li...
Stability of sorbitol dehydrogenase activity in bovine and equine sera.
Veterinary clinical pathology    January 1, 1993   Volume 22, Issue 1 5-9 doi: 10.1111/j.1939-165x.1993.tb00869.x
Horney BS, Honor DJ, MacKenzie A, Burton S.Serum sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) activities in 10 cows and nine horses were measured using an automated clinical analyzer. The serum samples were divided into aliquots that were stored at room temperature (21 degrees C), refrigerated (0-5 degrees C), or frozen (-30 degrees C). The stability of the SDH activity was monitored at various intervals. SDH activity in bovine sera remained stable for at least 5 hours at room temperature, 24 hours refrigerated, and 72 hours frozen without any significant (p < 0.05) differences from the initial serum values. In equine sera, SDH activity remained st...
Incarceration of the small intestine in the epiploic foramen. Report of 19 cases (1983-1992).
Veterinary surgery : VS    January 1, 1993   Volume 22, Issue 1 57-61 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1993.tb00370.x
Engelbert TA, Tate LP, Bowman KF, Bristol DG.The medical records of 19 horses referred for colic and subsequently found (18 confirmed, 1 suspected) to have small intestinal incarceration through the epiploic foramen were reviewed. These horses were of various ages and breeds; they had clinical signs of colic for an average duration of 13.5 hours before examination. Seventeen horses had nasogastric reflux, and 15 had palpable small intestinal distention. Three horses were killed during surgery because of severe intestinal damage. Of the remaining 16 horses, 13 required intestinal resection and anastomosis. The length of incarcerated small...
[The occurrence and significance of enterotoxin-producing Clostridium perfringens strains in the intestinal tract of horses].
Berliner und Munchener tierarztliche Wochenschrift    January 1, 1993   Volume 106, Issue 1 1-6
Gautsch S, Beckmann G, Amtsberg G, Dieckmann M, Deegen E.100 faecal samples from clinically healthy horses of different age groups and feeding habits, 50 samples of faeces from horses suffering from enteropathy accompanied by diarrhoea and small and/or large intestine from 25 horses that had died after an intestinal disease were examined for the presence of Clostridium (Cl.) perfringens. The frequency with which Cl. perfringens was detected was 22% in clinically healthy horses, 32% in horses with diarrhoea and 52% in the dead horses. In two faecal samples from the horses with diarrhoea the microbial count of Cl. perfringens was ca. 10(6) cfu/g faece...
Partial arytenoidectomy in the horse using an extralaryngeal approach.
Veterinary surgery : VS    January 1, 1993   Volume 22, Issue 1 50-56 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1993.tb00368.x
Hay WP, Tulleners EP, Ducharme NG.An extralaryngeal approach to partial arytenoidectomy in the horse was developed by in vitro experiments on isolated larynges and then on intact equine cadavers. The goals of the approach were to preserve the laryngeal mucosa, eliminate the need for a laryngotomy or tracheotomy, and minimize postoperative complications. The new approach was evaluated in seven horses with normal upper respiratory tracts. Left laryngeal hemiplegia was surgically created, and, after a 30-day convalescence, left partial arytenoidectomy was performed using an extralaryngeal approach. The left-to-right hemilaryngeal...

Effect of carnitine supplement to the dam on plasma carnitine concentration in the sucking foal.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1993   Volume 25, Issue 1 49-52 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1993.tb02901.x
Benamou AE, Harris RC.The changes in carnitine in plasma and milk during the first 3 months of lactation were studied in 14 broodmares and their foals. Six of the mares (Group S) were given a supplement of 10 g carnitine split between the morning and evening feeds, starting 2 weeks before birth. At birth the plasma carnitine concentration in Group S mares was about twice that in Group NS mares (no supplement). In both groups the concentration initially declined in the days after birth. Whilst this trend was reversed in Group S mares, the concentration in Group NS mares remained at a reduced level for the remainder ...
Serum triiodothyronine, total thyroxine, and free thyroxine concentrations in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1993   Volume 54, Issue 1 52-55
Sojka JE, Johnson MA, Bottoms GD.The objectives of this experiment were to determine serum concentrations of triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and free thyroxine (fT4) at rest, following thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) administration, and following phenylbutazone administration in healthy horses. This was done to determine which available laboratory test can best be used for diagnosis of hypothyroid conditions in horses. Serum T3, T4, and fT4 concentrations in serum samples obtained before and after TSH stimulation and following phenylbutazone administration for 7 days were determined. Baseline values ranged from 0.21 ...
A comparison of ELISA, FAST-ELISA and gel diffusion tests for detecting antibody to equine infectious anaemia virus.
Veterinary microbiology    January 1, 1993   Volume 34, Issue 1 1-5 doi: 10.1016/0378-1135(93)90002-o
Lew AM, Thomas LM, Huntington PJ.Sera of sixteen horses with clinical signs of EIA from six different outbreaks and sera of 100 uninfected horses were used to validate an ELISA for EIA diagnosis. The antigen used was a recombinant protein derived from the amino-terminal portion of the transmembrane envelope protein of EIA (gp45). Reactivity between positive and negative sera could be clearly distinguished. Comparison with the traditional agar gel immunodiffusion test (commonly called the Coggins test) showed that the ELISA was superior in sensitivity. Comparison of this ELISA with the FAST-ELISA system showed that the latter ...
Haematological parameters of the Polish Primitive Horses.
Archivum veterinarium Polonicum    January 1, 1993   Volume 33, Issue 3-4 205-216
Krumrych W, Wiśniewski E, Danek J.Average values of chosen haematological parameters have been described in a population of 90 clinically normal Polish Primitive Horses. The comparison of the results with values given in literature for horses as a whole and for other breeds enabled us to state that Polish Primitive Horses' blood is characterized by relatively low values of RBC, PCV, segmented neutrophils and monocytes, and high percentage of lymphocytes. It was demonstrated that values of some blood parameters of examined animals are similar to typical results obtained for primitive and cold-blooded horses. Moreover, it was pr...

Infiltrative lipoma in a quarter horse.
The Cornell veterinarian    January 1, 1993   Volume 83, Issue 1 57-60
Lepage OM, Laverty S, Drolet R, Lavoie JP.A case of infiltrative lipoma in the left flank of a yearling Quarter Horse is described. Rectal palpation, percutaneous ultrasonographic examination, the marbled appearance and poor delineation from surrounding tissues strongly suggested an infiltrative lipoma. This was confirmed by histological examination. Infiltrative lipomas should be included in the differential diagnosis of soft masses located in equine muscle.
[Indications for ultrasonography in the diagnosis of surgical diseases].
Tierarztliche Praxis. Supplement    January 1, 1993   34-39
Fritsch R.Ultrasonography has established itself as an invaluable diagnostic aid in surgical diseases. In addition to the diagnosis of thoracic and abdominal disease, ultrasonography is increasing in importance in the examination of muscles, tendons and joints in small animals. In the horse, the application of the technique is being extended from tendon conditions to organ diseases. The optimal diagnostic information can only be achieved through the use of different scanner types.
Closed-circuit liquid injection isoflurane anesthesia in the horse.
Veterinary surgery : VS    January 1, 1993   Volume 22, Issue 1 73-78 doi: 10.1111/j.1532-950x.1993.tb00374.x
Olson KN, Klein LV, Nann LE, Soma LR.Six horses were administered isoflurane anesthesia by liquid injection into a closed breathing circuit according to the square root of time model. The unit dose (UD) was calculated using Lowe's formula to provide an end-tidal concentration of 1.3%, or the minimum alveolar concentration of isoflurane. The mean UD was 4.2 +/- 0.2 mL. The mean end-tidal isoflurane concentration (ETiso) for each interval after injection, and the peak and minimum concentrations for each injection interval, did not change beginning with the second injection, indicating that the square root of time model accurately p...
Antagonism of a specific dopaminergic receptor agonist with metoclopramide in horses.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1993   Volume 54, Issue 1 122-125
Eades SC, Moore JN.Changes in lateral cecal arterial blood flow, mean internal carotid arterial pressure, and heart rate caused by nasogastric administration of fenoldopam (3, 6, and 9 mg/kg of body weight), a selective agonist of dopaminergic receptors, were recorded in 7 healthy horses. Cecal arterial blood flow was significantly increased within 30 minutes after administration of fenoldopam at all 3 dosages, with the peak increases from baseline (67.8 +/- 17.5 ml/min) being 125 +/- 28, 120 +/- 22, and 153 +/- 32 ml/min for 3, 6, and 9 mg/kg, respectively. Although carotid arterial pressure did not change sign...

Kramer J, Tornquist S, Erfle J, Sloeojan G.Large granular lymphocytes (LGL) occur as a leukemic or aleukemic neoplasia in humans,(1) rats,(2) cats,(3,4) dogs,(5) and horses.(6) The single case of equine LGL previously reported was aleukemic.(5) In contrast to this previous report of aleukemic equine LGL neoplasia, the leukemia in the case presented here established the antemortem diagnosis of LGL.
The effect of starting time on dexamethasone suppression test results in horses.
Domestic animal endocrinology    January 1, 1993   Volume 10, Issue 1 1-5 doi: 10.1016/0739-7240(93)90002-s
Sojka JE, Johnson MA, Bottoms GD.This study was conducted to investigate the effect of starting time on dexamethasone suppression test results in horses. Eight adult horses were used throughout the trial. Baseline cortisol levels were established by collecting cortisol levels twice daily, at 8:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M. for 4 consecutive days. Morning baseline cortisol levels were 46.3 +/- 5.94 ng/ml, and evening baseline cortisol levels were 32.8 +/- 5.59 ng/ml. Although lower, the evening cortisol levels were not statistically different (P = 0.154) from the morning levels. Dexamethasone suppression tests initiated at either 9:00...
Analgesic effects of detomidine in thoroughbred horses with chronic tendon injury.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1993   Volume 54, Issue 1 52-56 doi: 10.1016/0034-5288(93)90010-d
Chambers JP, Livingston A, Waterman AE, Goodship AE.This study was undertaken to assess the analgesia provided by detomidine (20 micrograms kg-1 intravenously) in thoroughbred horses. Pain thresholds to a mechanical noxious stimulus were measured before and after a period of mild chronic pain in one foreleg. Detomidine was a good analgesic in control animals; their pain thresholds were significantly elevated for about 60 minutes. After injury, the injured leg had a significantly lower pain threshold and the intensity and duration of analgesia provided by detomidine were significantly reduced. The analgesia in the opposite (sound) leg was also r...
A method for loading equine platelets with the fluorescent calcium indicator Fura-2: ADP induces a rise in the cytosolic free calcium ion concentration.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1993   Volume 25, Issue 1 45-48 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1993.tb02900.x
Poole AW, Heath MF, Sage SO, Evans RJ.Equine platelets in platelet-rich plasma were incubated with the fluorescent indicator dye, Fura-2-AM (Fura-2-acetoxymethyl ester) and the degree of loading of the cells with the dye and the extent of hydrolysis of the ester was assessed by quantitative fluorimetry and by thin-layer chromatography respectively. Under these conditions the cells loaded poorly with Fura-2 to a concentration of 4 microM. The technique was validated by demonstrating adequate loading of human platelets with Fura-2, to a concentration of 250-300 microM, using the same method. The removal of plasma from the extracellu...
