Topic:Clinical Study

Clinical studies in equine research involve the systematic investigation of health and disease in horses through structured scientific methods. These studies aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of treatments, understand disease mechanisms, and improve veterinary care practices. Clinical studies can include randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and case-control studies. They may focus on various aspects such as pharmacokinetics, therapeutic interventions, and diagnostic techniques. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the design, implementation, and findings of clinical studies in equine medicine, providing insights into their impact on horse health and veterinary practices.
Effect of pulsatile gonadotrophin release on mean serum LH and FSH in peri-parturient mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 635-640
Hines KK, Fitzgerald BP, Loy RG.Changes in the pattern of LH and FSH in serum were studied in 6 mares foaling during the summer. Samples were collected frequently (every 15 min) for 24 h twice before foaling, -33 +/- 2 and -12 +/- 2 days, and for 12 h after foaling, on Day 0 and Day 4. Simultaneous pulses of FSH and LH were observed before foaling (r2 = 0.99). Before foaling, gonadotrophin pulses were infrequent (6 in 264 h of observation). On the day of foaling, LH and FSH pulse frequency increased (P less than 0.005) with 2-4 pulses per mare. The amplitudes of pulses of LH and FSH were higher before parturition than for th...
Pharmacological manipulation of sexual behaviour in stallions.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 45-49
McDonnell SM, Garcia MC, Kenney RM.Series of experiments and clinical trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of psychoneurotropic agents on sexual behaviour of stallions. The benzodiazepine derivative, diazepam (Valium), effectively reversed experimentally suppressed precopulatory arousal and response. Diazepam treatment also blocked the negative effect of novel environment on sexual response. The dibenzazepines imipramine and clomipramine induced erection, masturbation, and ejaculation in the absence of a sexual stimulus.
Changes in maternal hormone concentrations associated with induction of fetal death at day 45 of gestation in mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 35 461-467
Jeffcott LB, Hyland JH, MacLean AA, Dyke T, Robertson-Smith G.Pregnant Standardbred mares were allocated to 2 groups. On Day 45 of gestation, 20-45 ml saline (240 g NaCl/l) were injected into the fetal sacs of 10 mares, and the other 10 mares were given sham treatment. Post-operative plasma oestrone sulphate concentrations were lower (P less than 0.01) on Days 48-55 in saline-treated mares than in sham-treated mares. Mean plasma progesterone profiles were similar in the two groups of mares, although post-operative luteolysis occurred in 4 saline-treated mares. There was no difference in plasma CG profiles between the 2 groups, except that CG concentratio...
[Diagnosis of liver diseases in dogs, cats and horses].
Tierarztliche Praxis    January 1, 1987   Volume 15, Issue 4 343-347
Kraft W.Clinical symptoms of hepatopathies are not specific and must be verified by further investigation. Laboratory diagnosis is a very useful method to decide if liver disease is present or not. In individual cases laboratory methods can give hints as to the aetiology of the illness. If necessary, biopsy, angiography or/and cholecystography can be carried out for further clarification of the diagnosis.
Evaluation and management of respiratory disease in the horse.
Tierarztliche Praxis. Supplement    January 1, 1987   Volume 2 21-23
Johnston AM.Respiratory disease is one of the commonest medical reasons for referring a horse to the Royal Veterinary College, with coughing the main presenting sign. Investigation requires the taking of a detailed history, clinical examination, the use of appropriate diagnostic aids and noting response to medication and management changes. On arrival the horse is stabled in a minimal dust environment, remaining there until discharge. The use of a dust-free box frequently produces a favourable response without the use of medication which in itself is diagnostic. The problem of a horse which is asymptomati...
Methodological issues in behavioural immunology.
Immunology today    January 1, 1987   Volume 8, Issue 2 33-34 doi: 10.1016/0167-5699(87)90233-7
Cohen JJ.Sunrise over the Rincon Mountains revealed a procession of fifty horses groaning under their burden of psychologists and immunologists as a recent desert workshop got under way. The participants later sat, some rather gingerly, around a table to discuss methodological questions central to the new and sometimes embattled field variously called behavioural immunology, psychoneuroimmunology, and neuroimmunomodulation.
Equine basal cell tumors.
Veterinary pathology    January 1, 1987   Volume 24, Issue 1 44-49 doi: 10.1177/030098588702400108
Schuh JC, Valentine BA.Basal cell tumors from 11 horses were examined histologically. Distinct patterns identified in the order of frequency are adenoid (six), solid (three), and medusoid (two). A minor component of most of these neoplasms was a ribbon pattern and cystic spaces. Hyalinized connective tissue and clear cells reminiscent of hair follicle glassy membranes and outer root sheath were present in a solid and the medusoid tumors. Heavy melanin pigmentation was present in one solid basal cell tumor. In eight cases for which information was available, the tumors had not recurred 3 to 8 years after excision.
Secretion of luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone in intact and ovariectomized mares in summer and winter.
Journal of animal science    January 1, 1987   Volume 64, Issue 1 247-253 doi: 10.2527/jas1987.641247x
Thompson DL, McNeill DR, Wiest JJ, St George RL, Jones LS, Garza F.Sequential samples of blood were drawn via jugular catheters every 15 min for 24 h from four mares in each of five reproductive states: intact anestrous mares in winter, intact diestrous mares in summer, intact estrous mares in summer, ovariectomized mares in winter and ovariectomized mares in summer. Estrous mares were sampled on d 4 or 5 of estrus and diestrous mares on d 10 or 11 of diestrus. Each sample of plasma was assessed for concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in two independent radioimmunoassays. A computer program was developed that dete...

The Veterinary record    December 6, 1986   Volume 119, Issue 23 569-571
Rutten DR, Chaffaux S, Valon M, Deletang F, De Haas V.In two studies in Holland and France a total of 41 mares found either to be in anoestrus or showing continuous oestrous behaviour during the early part of the covering season were treated with a progesterone releasing intravaginal device. Of the 32 mares in the first study, 24 ovulated after treatment and 11 became pregnant to a covering at the induced oestrus. In the second study all but one of the nine mares showed oestrus, seven ovulated and six became pregnant at the post treatment oestrus. By the end of the covering season 15 of the 21 mares treated for anoestrus and seven of the 11 mares...
Techniques for taking a behavioral history.
The Veterinary clinics of North America. Equine practice    December 1, 1986   Volume 2, Issue 3 507-518 doi: 10.1016/s0749-0739(17)30703-4
Crowell-Davis SL, Houpt KA.A thorough behavioral history is essential for adequate assessment of a given case. In reviewing the chief complaint, a description of what actually happened, rather than the owner's interpretation of what happened, is required. Other behavior problems, environment, rearing history, and training need to be reviewed. Sample question sets for some common problems are given.
Pharmacokinetics of rifampin given as a single oral dose in foals.
American journal of veterinary research    December 1, 1986   Volume 47, Issue 12 2584-2586
Castro LA, Brown MP, Gronwall R, Houston AE, Miles N.Six foals from 6 to 8 weeks of age were given a single oral dose of rifampin at a dosage of 10 mg/kg of body weight. Serum rifampin concentrations were measured serially during a 24-hour period. The mean peak serum rifampin concentration was 6.7 micrograms/ml at 4 hours after treatment. The concentration decreased slowly, and at 24 hours the mean value was 2.7 micrograms/ml. The elimination half-life was 17.5 hours, and the elimination rate constant was 0.04/hr.
Evaluation of the repair process of cartilage defects of the equine third carpal bone with and without subchondral bone perforation.
American journal of veterinary research    December 1, 1986   Volume 47, Issue 12 2637-2645
Vachon A, Bramlage LR, Gabel AA, Weisbrode S.To determine the effect of subchondral bone drilling (forage) on the cartilage repair process after injury has occurred, a cartilage defect (1 cm in diameter) was created on the radial facet of the proximal surface of each third carpal bone in 6 adult horses. In one of the third carpal bones (right or left thoracic limb) of each horse, a 1-cm cartilage defect was created, and 5 holes (1 mm in diameter and 10 mm deep) were drilled through the subchondral bone into the cancellous bone. In the other thoracic limb, an identical defect was created, but not drilled. Analyses of cell numbers and type...
A short, reliable, highly reproducible complement fixation test for the serological diagnosis of contagious equine metritis.
The Onderstepoort journal of veterinary research    December 1, 1986   Volume 53, Issue 4 241-243
Gummow B, Herr S, Brett OL.A complement fixation test, using round-bottomed microtitration plates and an 8 channel microdiluter, based on that used for brucellosis by Herr, Huchzermeyer, Te Brugge, Williamson, Roos & Schiele, 1985, has been developed for use on the sera of horses to detect antibodies to the contagious equine metritis organism. The results with 2 known positive sera tested 116 times in 27 separate tests were reproducible for the most part within a twofold range. They seldom exceeded these limits and never exceeded a fourfold range. The test itself is capable of being carried out within 90 min. The te...
The functional competence of uterine-derived polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) from mares resistant and susceptible to chronic uterine infection: a sequential migration analysis.
Biology of reproduction    December 1, 1986   Volume 35, Issue 5 1168-1174 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod35.5.1168
Liu IK, Cheung AT, Walsh EM, Ayin S.The functional competence of uterine-derived polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) from 28 mares was measured for migration responsiveness by use of a chamber (filter) assay. Uterine infection was induced with Streptococcus zooepidemicus in mares considered resistant to chronic uterine infection (Grade I). In sequential analysis of uterine flushings obtained from these mares 5, 12, 15, 20, and 25 h after infection was induced, PMNs showed an initial rise at 12 h (from 5), then a general decline in migration response and in concentration of cells per ml from 12 through 25 h post-inoculation. In ...
Software for analysis of equine ground reaction force data.
Computer methods and programs in biomedicine    December 1, 1986   Volume 23, Issue 3 247-253 doi: 10.1016/0169-2607(86)90058-1
Schamhardt HC, Merkens HW, Lammertink JL.Software for analysis of force plate recordings of the horse at normal walk is described. The data of a number of stance phases are averaged to obtain a representative tracing of that horse. The amplitudes of a number of characteristic peaks in the force-time curves are used to compare left and right front limbs and left and right hind limbs. The averaged tracings are plotted, default on the line printer or, via separate program, on a high quality pen plotter. A version of the program applicable for analysis of human force plate recordings, is available.

Biology of reproduction    December 1, 1986   Volume 35, Issue 5 1123-1130 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod35.5.1123
Johnson AL.Cycling standardbred mares were infused with saline or 20 micrograms gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) in a pulsatile pattern (one 5-sec pulse/h, 2 h or 4 h) beginning on Day 16 of the estrous cycle. Although serum concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) increased significantly earlier in all three GnRH-treated groups (within one day of the initiation of infusion) compared to saline-infused controls, there were no differences in peak periovulatory LH concentrations among treatments (overall mean +/- SEM, 8.98 +/- 0.55 ng/ml). The number of days from the start of treatment to ovulation w...
Surface oximetry of healthy and ischemic equine intestine.
American journal of veterinary research    December 1, 1986   Volume 47, Issue 12 2530-2535
Snyder JR, Pascoe JR, Holland M, Kurpershoek CJ.Measurements of jejunal, ileal, and large colon (pelvic flexure) surface O2 tension (PSO2) were made in halothane-anesthetized horses with a nonheated miniature oxygen polarographic electrode. Assisted ventilation with 100% O2 was used to maintain PaCO2 tension at 50 +/- 8 mm of Hg while mean arterial blood pressure was maintained greater than or equal to 70 mm of Hg. Mean +/- SD PSO2 for the intestinal segments were: jejunum (horses 1 to 4), 71 +/- 20 mm of Hg; ileum (horses 1 to 4), 61 +/- 8 mm of Hg; and pelvic flexure of the large colon (horses 1 to 10), 55 +/- 13 mm of Hg. The response of...
