Topic:Clinical Study

Clinical studies in equine research involve the systematic investigation of health and disease in horses through structured scientific methods. These studies aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of treatments, understand disease mechanisms, and improve veterinary care practices. Clinical studies can include randomized controlled trials, observational studies, and case-control studies. They may focus on various aspects such as pharmacokinetics, therapeutic interventions, and diagnostic techniques. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the design, implementation, and findings of clinical studies in equine medicine, providing insights into their impact on horse health and veterinary practices.
Effects of synchronization and frequency in insemination on fertility.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 257-261
Voss JL, Wallace RA, Squires EL, Pickett BW, Shideler RK.Fifty-four normally cycling, non-lactating mares were given 2 injections (i.m.) of PGF-2 alpha (10 mg) 14 days apart without regard to stage of the oestrous cycle. At 19 days after the first PGF-2 alpha treatment, a single i.m. injection of either hCG (3300 i.u.) or a GnRH-analogue (500 micrograms) was administered. Each mare was inseminated with 100 X 10(6) motile spermatozoa at one of the following frequencies: once only on Day 20; every other day during oestrus or at least on Days 19 and 21; or daily during oestrus or at least on Days 19, 20, 21 and 22. Eighteen control mares received salin...

Influence of exogenous testosterone on sperm production, seminal quality and libido of stallions.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 19-23
Berndtson WE, Hoyer JH, Squires EL, Pickett BW.The effect of exogenous testosterone on sperm production, seminal quality and libido was studied in 24 stallions. Based on pretreatment data, a stallion was assigned to 1 of 3 groups each containing 8 animals. One member of each group received 0 (Group 1), 50 (Group 2), or 200 micrograms (Group 3) testosterone propionate per kg body weight every 2 days for 88 days. The lower dose of testosterone had no significant effect on most of the parameters studied: the higher dose depressed total scrotal width at Day 90 post-treatment (P less than 0.01), total spermatozoa ejaculated between Days 60 and ...

Endometrial biopsy findings in mares with contagious equine metritis.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 355-359
Ricketts SW, Rossdale PD.Endometrial biopsy samples before and after treatment were obtained from 10 mares naturally infected and one Pony mare experimentally infected with Contagious Equine Metritis in 1977. The histopathological features were a short-lived polymorphonuclear cell infiltration of the luminal epithelium and stroma followed by a very early and marked mononuclear cell infiltration of the stroma, including many plasma cells. The luminal epithelium responded with cellular proliferation which may have reflected a regenerative response. Following the initial acute response, intercellular basal vacuoles conta...
Selenium and gamma-glutamyl transferase activity in the serum of thoroughbreds.
Research in veterinary science    January 1, 1979   Volume 26, Issue 1 76-80
Blackmore DJ, Willett K, Agness D.Selenium and gamma-glutamyl transferase activity has been measured in the serum of clinically health thoroughbreds. The thoroughbreds, whose performance was reported to be unsatisfactory, had consistently low concentrations of selenium and high activity of gamma-glutamyl transferase in the serum when compared with those whose performance was as expected. Vitamin E levels in the serum showed no such difference. The only other biochemical and haematological abnormality was lower serum phosphate concentrations in the unsatisfactory group. These results suggest that low concentrations of selenium ...
Scanning electron microscope studies of the endometrium of the cyclic mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 287-292
Samuel CA, Ricketts SW, Rossdale PD, Steven DH, Thurley KW.Endometrial biopsies obtained from mares at different stages of the oestrous cycle, during anoestrus and in various abnormal conditions were examined with the scanning electron microscope. Preliminary observations suggest that the patterns of secretory and ciliary activity in the uterine epithelium are similar to those observed by electron microscopical techniques in laboratory and other large domestic animals. The response of the epithelial cells to hormonal variations and infections is compared with that of the endometrium as seen with the light microscope.

Plasma progesterone concentrations derived from the administration of exogenous progesterone to ovariectomized mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 211-216
Hawkins DL, Neely DP, Stabenfeldt GH.Six ovariectomized mares were divided into 3 groups to determine the effects of exogenous progesterone in oil and repositol progesterone on plasma progesterone concentrations. Progesterone in oil was administered in 7 daily injections in Exp. I. Progesterone concentrations were not maintained greater than 1.0 ng/ml for 24 h with 50 mg/day. However, they remained greater than 1.0 ng/ml during the last 4 days of 100 mg/day and greater than 1.5 ng/ml throughout the injection sequence of 200 mg/day. Repositol progesterone was administered on Days 1 and 7 in Exp. II. At 500 mg, progesterone concent...

Foreign body obstruction of the small colon in six horses.
Equine veterinary journal    January 1, 1979   Volume 11, Issue 1 60-63 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1979.tb01302.x
Gay CC, Speirs VC, Christie BA, Smyth B, Parry B.Six horses, which had a foreign body obstruction of the small colon showed abdominal pain of progressing severity and intestinal tympany. On rectal examination the caecum and large colon were distended with ingesta and gas but the obstructing mass could be palpated in only 3 cases. All horses had elevated indirect blood pressure and in 3 there was also fluid distension of the stomach. Only one horse had known access to foreign material in the diet, but a further 3 were related to an exceptionally dry climate period. Five of the 6 horses recovered following surgery.

Critical test evaluation of butamisole against gastrointestinal parasites of horses and ponies.
American journal of veterinary research    January 1, 1979   Volume 40, Issue 1 139-141
Grieve RB, Moore BG, Bradley RE.A critical test was performed to evaluate the anthelmintic properties of an injectable butamisole formulation and to compare the efficiency with that of a commercially available piperazine-thiabendazole anthelmintic. The test was done in 10 horses and 15 ponies with naturally acquired parasitic infections. Butamisole was administered at the dose level of 2.5 or 3.75 mg/kg of body weight by either subcutaneous or deep intramuscular injection. Given at the dose level of 2.5 mg/kg, butamisole was highly effective (99%) against Strongylus vulgaris and moderately effective (49%) against Parascaris ...

Maxwell JA.A 9-year-old mare exhibiting signs of colic late in pregnancy was presented. Uterine torsion was diagnosed and corrected by caesarean section. A live foal was delivered and the mare survived the surgical interference.
Prolonged interovulatory interval after oestradiol treatment in mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 205-209
Woodley SL, Burns PJ, Douglas RH, Oxender WD.This study was designed to test if oestradiol treatment would prevent or delay luteolysis in mares. Mares (5/group) received 0, 0.1, 1.0 or 10.0 mg oestradiol-17 beta daily from the day of ovulation until the next ovulation or for a maximum of 32 days. This treatment did not prevent luteolysis which occurred 15.8, 16.8, 15.8 and 17.3 days after the previous ovulation for the mares treated with 0, 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0 mg oestradiol respectively. Although oestradiol treatment failed to alter oestrous behaviour after luteolysis, daily treatment with 10.0 mg oestradiol prevented follicular growth and...
Blood-volume determination with Evans blue dye in foals.
Acta veterinaria Scandinavica    January 1, 1979   Volume 20, Issue 1 10-15 doi: 10.1186/BF03546624
Persson SG, Ullberg LE.The rate of disappearance of Evans blue dye from the blood after an intravenous injection was studied in young foals, between 4 and 105 days of age. This was found to be age dependant, especially during the first month, the initial dye disappearance being much faster than in the adult horse. This would mean an overestimation of plasma volume, using the single sampling technique, of about 5% during the first day of life, i.e. negligible from a practical point of view considering the standard error of estimation. The effect of exercise on the venous haematocrit was studied, too, in foals less th...
Interaction of oestradiol and gonadotrophin-releasing hormone on LH release in the mare.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 151-155
Vivrette SL, Irvine CH.Acyclic mare given oestradiol for 3 days to simulate the preovulatory plasma oestradiol surge showed a non-significant 37% decrease in plasma LH during treatment. When GnRH analogue injections were given with oestradiol on Days 1--3, oestradiol had no effect on each GnRH-induced LH increase, but LH increases were more prolonged following subsequent GnRH injections on Days 4--7 when oestradiol was no longer being given. A much greater prolongation of LH release occurred when the course of GnRH injections was commenced after oestradiol treatment ceased; the LH response was almost identical to th...

Oestrus and fertility following progestagen treatment of mares showing clinical evidence of early pregnancy failure.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 453-455
Günzel AR, Merkt H.Of 383 mares showing clinical evidence of suspected early fetal resorption between 20 and 60 days after mating, 217 were treated with a single injection of 200 mg CAP (a synthetic progestagen); the remaining 166 mares served as untreated controls. Treatment had neither a beneficial nor a detrimental effect on the continuation of pregnancy. Conception rates following loss of the conceptus were higher in lactating than in non-lactating mares. No increase in number of twin or deformed foals was evident in the treated animals.

Serum and liver lipid composition and lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase in horses, Equus caballus.
Comparative biochemistry and physiology. B, Comparative biochemistry    January 1, 1979   Volume 62, Issue 2 185-193 doi: 10.1016/0305-0491(79)90309-2
Yamamoto M, Tanaka Y, Sugano M.1. The lipid composition of serum and liver and some properties of serum lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase of the horse were investigated. 2. Phospholipids and cholesterol were the major components of serum lipids and the concentration of triglyceride was considerably low. The concentration of liver lipids was comparable with that of other mammals. 3. Fatty acid composition of serum cholesterol ester resembled that of the 2-position of lecithin, except palmitic acid. 4. The activity of serum cholesterol esterifying enzyme was found to be 0.03-0.09 mumol/hr per ml. There was an equimolar de...
Alteration of seasonal reproductive patterns in mares following superior cervical ganglionectomy.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 87-93
Sharp DC, Vernon MW, Zavy MT.Oestrous behaviour, ovarian follicular development, ovulation and changes in hair coat were observed in Pony mares which were unoperated, sham-ganglionectomized control or bilaterally superior cervical ganglionectomized. Surgery was performed during the winter anoestrus (1975--1976). Reproductive patterns in all groups were similar during the first breeding season (1976) after operation but in ganglionectomized mares the onset of the next breeding season (date of first ovulation in 1977), the pattern of follicular development, date of first oestrus and pattern of hair coat changes were all sig...
Induction of follicular development and ovulation in seasonally acyclic mares using gonadotrophin-releasing hormones and progesterone.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 113-121
Evans MJ, Irvine CH.Deeply acyclic (seasonally anovulatory) mares were treated with GnRH or a GnRH analogue to induce follicular development and ovulation. Courses of GnRH (3--4) were administered at approximately 10-day intervals to reproduce the gonadotrophin surges which precede ovulation in the normal cycle. Exogenous progesterone was administered in an attempt to reproduce the luteal phase pattern. Induced serum FSH concentrations were comparable to those causing follicular development in the normal cycle, but induced LH levels were lower and of shorter duration than those of the periovulatory surge. Three o...
