Hemodynamic effects of calcium gluconate administered to conscious horses. Calcium gluconate was administered to conscious horses at 3 different rates (0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 mg/kg/min for 15 minutes each). Serum calcium concentrations and parameters of cardiovascular function were evaluated. Replication of equid herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in the testes and epididymides of ponies and venereal shedding of infectious virus. Six Welsh Mountain pony colts were infected intranasally with the Ab4 isolate of EHV-1. Clinical and virological monitoring demonstrated mild upper respiratory tract disease, with nasal shedding of virus and establishment of a cell-associated viraemia. Natural superinfection of Parascaris equorum in a stall-confined orphan horse foal. At 4 days of age, an orphan horse foal born on a pasture was placed in a parasite-free stall. It was euthanized at 205 days of age and examination revealed numerous. Parascaris equorum specimens, ranging from 3.0 mm to adult size, indicating reinfections in the stall over an extended period of time. Initial infection of the foal was from stages on pasture. The foal had been observed repeatedly eating its own feces and the question is posed as to whether "recycling' of P. equorum eggs several times by coprophagy allowed time for embryonation and reinfection to occur.

Pathomorphological findings in a case of onychomycosis of a racehorse. The hooves of a racehorse which were affected with white line disease and hoof wall disorders on both forelimbs were histopathologically investigated using thin ground section and standard paraffin section techniques. On both hooves, large quantities of fungus were found to have invaded the white line tissues, especially in the terminal horn which were markedly damaged. Glyceryl trinitrate enhances nitric oxide mediated perfusion within the equine hoof. Laminitis, a microvascular disease of the equine hoof leads to severe lameness. Exogenous iv 1-arginine and transdermal nitric oxide donors, such as GTN, applied to the pasterns improve lameness during acute laminitis. Identification of an alternatively spliced transcript of equine interleukin-1 beta. Using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated equine peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) cDNA as a template, we performed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification with equine interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) specific primers. Acute small intestinal injury associated with hematomas in the mesentery of four horses. Four horses were evaluated for clinical signs consistent with small intestinal disease. During exploratory surgery, primary hematomas in the mesentery were found in 2 horses. Intracranial hematoma in experienced teenage equestrians. Intracranial hematoma in pediatric equestrians is rare, notwithstanding the lack of uniform standards and requirements for the use of protective headgear during equestrian events. We report two teenage helmeted equestrians who sustained severe head trauma with intracranial hematoma due to falls during equestrian events. Clinical and pathological aspects of an outbreak of equine leukoencephalomalacia in Spain. In 1988 an outbreak of leukoencephalomalacia was diagnosed in equids that had eaten corn with a pinkish fungal growth. The fungus was then identified as Fusarium moniliforme.
