[Architectonics of the blood vessels in the wall of the allantoamnion of the mare].
Veterinarno-meditsinski nauki    January 1, 1979   Volume 16, Issue 8 23-28
Gudev Kh, Kovachev G.Alantoamnion vascularization was studied on clarified preparations from three mares in advanced pregnancy. Two large blood vessels (artery and vein) beginning from the umbilical vessels were found in the alantoamnion wall. Numerous anastomoses were observed at the passage between the arterial and the vein section. The large arteries had a thick, jely-like vascular wall and snake-like folded lumen. In separate sections of the alantoamnion wall a well developed capillary net was observed consisting of individual particles, polygonal in shape. Vast avascular zones surrounded by numerous vascular ...
Tendon and ligament from the horse: an ultrastructural study of collagen fibrils and elastic fibres as a function of age.
Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series B, Biological sciences    December 18, 1978   Volume 203, Issue 1152 293-303 doi: 10.1098/rspb.1978.0106
Parry DA, Craig AS, Barnes GR.A study has been made of the ultrastructural organization of the collagen fibrils and elastic fibres in tendons and ligaments from horses of ages ranging from 2 months premature to 19 years. Diameter distributions of the collagen fibrils in the common digital extensor tendon, the superficial flexor tendon and the suspensory ligament are unimodal in the foetal tissue and at birth, and at these stages of development the three collagenous tissues are virtually indistinguishable. However, at maturity, the ligament and flexor tendon have bimodal distributions similar to that found for rat-tail tend...
Differences in the histochemical properties of skeletal muscles of different breeds of horses and dogs.
Journal of anatomy    December 1, 1978   Volume 127, Issue Pt 3 615-634
Gunn HM.Histochemical profiles of individual muscle fibres were established using myosin adenosine triphosphatase (myosin ATPase), succinate dehydrogenase (SDHase), and glycogen phosphorylase (GPase) reactions in three muscles (semitendinosus, diaphragm, and pectoralis transversus) of the horse and dog. The major histochemical difference between fibres lies in their myosin ATPase activity; fibres can be subdivided into those with a high and those with a low activity. In horse muscle, all fibres have a high activity of GPase. In the diaphragm and pectoralis transversus, all fibres have a high SDHase ac...

[Morphology of live and dead spermatozoa of stallions (author’s transl)].
Tijdschrift voor diergeneeskunde    December 1, 1978   Volume 103, Issue 23 1277-1283
Hendrikse J, van der Holst W, Best AP.Examination of 539 ejaculates of stallions of various breeds showed that approximately 60 per cent of the spermatozoa were completely normal morphologically. Of these morphologically normal spermatozoa, 13 per cent were dead. The total proportion of live spermatozoa was 75 per cent, 32 per cent being obviously abnormal (22 per cent of live and 10 per cent of dead spermatozoa). Separated heads (normal as well as abnormal) were significantly more common among dead spermatozoa. Protoplasmic droplets (both at the neck and at the end of the middle piece) were mainly present in live spermatozoa. As ...

Bishop WJ.GG is a useful sedative and anaesthetic agent in horses. Used alone, or in conjunction with barbiturates, it produces a un- iformly smooth recovery from anaesthesia. The need to infuse large volumes to obtain the desired effect is a disadvantage ofthis agent. Few critical studies have been made on the short and long term effects of administration of GG to horses. Its pharmacology and clinical use are described and indicate that it is a safe and useful drug.

The measurement of oestrone, equilin and dehydroepiandrosterone in the peripheral plasma of pregnant pony mares by radioimmunoassay.
Journal of steroid biochemistry    November 1, 1978   Volume 9, Issue 11 1065-1069 doi: 10.1016/0022-4731(78)90033-x
Rance TA, Park BK.Oestrone, equilin and dehydroepiandrosterone were measured by radioimmunoassay in peripheral plasma from five pony mares; samples were taken from day 60 of pregnancy at approximately weekly intervals through to parturition. Of the three steroids measured, dehydroepiandrosterone showed the most consistent pattern of secretion. DHA concentrations remained low until day 105, increased rapidly from day 120 and attained maximum values between days 168–210; levels declined to day 300, but there was considerable variation between mares in DHA patterns prior to parturition. There was great variation...
A light and electron microscopic study of the neuropathy of equine idiopathic laryngeal hemiplegia.
Neuropathology and applied neurobiology    November 1, 1978   Volume 4, Issue 6 483-501 doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2990.1978.tb01358.x
Duncan ID, Griffiths IR, Madrid RE.A study has been made of the pathological changes in the recurrent laryngeal nerves from horses with clinical and sub-clinical idiopathic laryngeal hemiplegia. Qualitative and quantitative studies showed in clinical cases there was a progressive distal loss of large myelinated fibres in the left recurrent nerve. Regenerating clusters and onion bulbs were frequently seen in affected nerves both at proximal and distal levels. Degenerating axons were characterized by collections of organelles, and denervated bands of Bungner were common. Similar but less severe changes were seen in the left recur...
A study of the normal range of strain, strain rate, and stiffness of tendon.
Journal of biomedical materials research    November 1, 1978   Volume 12, Issue 6 877-894 doi: 10.1002/jbm.820120610
Herrick WC, Kingsbury HB, Lou DY.This paper describes the result of an investigation of strains and strain rates which normally occur in the tendons of the equine foreleg and presents stress-strain curves and moduli for the tendons at these rates. It has previously been demonstrated that resistance to flexion of the joints of the distal part of the equine foreleg is provided by a passive system of tendons and ligaments. It is therefore possible, using a large displacement, high-rate testing machine, to duplicate in the laboratory the strain rates and forces which are normally produced in the tendons of the foreleg of the runn...
