Topic:Fertility

Fertility in horses encompasses the physiological processes and factors influencing reproductive success in equine species. It involves the study of reproductive anatomy, endocrinology, and behavior, as well as the management practices that affect breeding outcomes. Key aspects include the estrous cycle, conception rates, and factors impacting stallion and mare fertility. Reproductive technologies such as artificial insemination, embryo transfer, and hormonal therapies are also explored to enhance breeding efficiency. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that examine the biological mechanisms, management strategies, and technological advancements related to equine fertility.

Temperature of the artificial vagina and its effect on seminal quality and behavioral characteristics of stallions.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    October 15, 1980   Volume 177, Issue 8 720-722
Hillman RB, Olar TT, Squires EL, Pickett BW.Stallion semen was collected, using artificial vaginas at 44 to 46, 48 to 50, and 52 to 54 C, to study the effects of temperature on seminal quality and sexual behavior. The temperature of the artificial vagina had no significant effect on motility, gel volume, gel-free seminal volume, total seminal volume, pH, number of mounts per ejaculate, total time to ejaculation, or seminal temperature. Spermatozoa were collected, then exposed to water-bath temperatures of 38, 45, 49, or 53 C for 1 minute. Mean motility was similar after exposure to temperatures of 38 or 45 C, but exposure to temperature...
Maturation of equine epididymal spermatozoa.
American journal of veterinary research    August 1, 1980   Volume 41, Issue 8 1190-1196
Johnson L, Amann RP, Pickett BW.Spermatozoa from four regions of the epididymis and from ejaculated semen were evaluated for their resistance to cold shock, progressive motility, and structural stability. Spermatozoa were incubated at 38 C and their percentage of eosinophilia was compared with that of spermatozoa cooled to 0 C in 2 minutes, 10 C in 12 minutes, or 4 C in 22 minutes. Spermatozoa motility was estimated visually under phase-contrast microscopy and was recorded by cinematography. Structural stability of spermatozoa incubated in 0.05 M sodium borate buffer, 0.035 M sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), 0.002 M dithiothrei...

[The effect of the age of stallions and mares on their fertility].
Veterinarni medicina    July 1, 1980   Volume 25, Issue 7 437-448
Dusek J, Munk Z.The study was based on the documentation of the Napajedla Stud Farm of the English Thoroughbred horse for 1888-1972. Evaluating the effect of the age of stallions on their fertility (leaving aside the variability of the age of their mothers), such an effect was found to be significant only in four out of the 26 studs evaluated. In 65% of the selected stallions, the correlation coefficients were found to be negative, but without statistical significance. However, the objective of the study was to evaluate stallions and mares parallelly as to their age variability and fertility. The relationship...
Preliminary studies on the use of an oral progestogen to induce oestrus and ovulation in seasonally anoestrous Thoroughbred mares.
Equine veterinary journal    July 1, 1980   Volume 12, Issue 3 141-145 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1980.tb03405.x
Allen WR, Urwin V, Simpson DJ, Greenwood RE, Crowhurst RC, Ellis DR, Ricketts SW, Hunt MD, Digby NJ.Daily oral administration of 30 mg allyl trenbolone (Regumate) for 10 to 15 days to 61 barren, maiden and lactating Thoroughbred mares which were exhibiting either deep anoestrus, shallow anoestrus, prolonged spring oestrus or lactation anoestrus, resulted in 54 mares (88 per cent) showing oestrous behaviour within 8 days, and 51 mares (84 per cent) ovulating within 18 days, after the last dose of compound. Response rate was lowest in mares in deep anoestrus. Of the 38 Regumate-treated mares which were covered during the induced oestrus, 21 (55 per cent) conceived. The practical value of this ...
[The effect of inbreeding on the manifestations of some physiological traits in the Kladrub Black Horse strain].
Veterinarni medicina    June 1, 1980   Volume 25, Issue 6 349-358
Dusek J.Inbreeding was used in the regeneration process in the breeding of the Kladrub Black Horse. Inbreeding rate is realized in practice, as related to the manifestation of the selected characteristics of this unique horse population. The evaluation of the effect of inbreeding on conception rate and fertility did not demonstrate any differences between the group of inbred mares and non-inbred mares. The study was conducted in mares used for breeding for 10 years. The results provide evidence that inbreeding causes no depression in this characteristics in the Kladrub Black Horse which would otherwis...
[Estimation of the heritability coefficient of stud fertility].
Veterinarni medicina    May 1, 1980   Volume 25, Issue 5 299-304
Dusek J, Munk Z.The breeding documentation of the English Thoroughbred horse breeding farm at Napajedla was analyzed to study some effects acting upon the fertility of studs and mares and the length of gravidity. The heritability of fertility is the subject of this report. The normality of the distribution of fertility was tested by processing 300 data on fertility at the given significance level sup / Fn(xi) - F(xi) / less than or equal to Dn(a). The value of the supreme D(300) = 0.108 is lower than the critical level for alpha 0.05. The estimation of fertility heritability coefficient indicates that h2 = 0....

Non-surgical embryo collection in the mare and subsequent fertility of donor animals.
Journal of reproduction and fertility    March 1, 1980   Volume 58, Issue 2 357-361 doi: 10.1530/jrf.0.0580357
Tischner M, Bielański A.Observations were made on 14 mares which were non-surgically flushed on one or more occasions for recovery of embryos on Days 7-9 after ovulation. Flushing alone shortened the oestrous cycle by about 2.7 days but increased the number of mares failing to ovulate. Flushing followed by an injection of a prostaglandin analogue shortened the cycle by about 4.5 days and hence increased the frequency of ovulations. From a total of 70 flushings performed, 27 embryos were recovered and of 12 mares inseminated during the first oestrus after embryo collection, 6 conceived and foaled. The other 7 mares we...
[Diagnosis of early pregnancy by testing the progesterone level].
Der Praktische Tierarzt    January 1, 1980   Volume 61, Issue 1 52-55
Enbergs H.Measuring serum or plasma levels of progesterone can be used to determine if conception has occurred in horses. If the mare's progesterone level is below 2 ng/ml 18 days after mating has occurred, conception has not taken place. This method can be used as an addunct to genital examination, and it can be used to determine if hormonal irregularities are present in mares who have not been able to conceive.

H-Y antigen in a fertile XY female horse.
Journal of reproduction and fertility    January 1, 1980   Volume 58, Issue 1 157-160 doi: 10.1530/jrf.0.0580157
Sharp AJ, Wachtel SS, Benirschke K.The presence of significantly reduced levels of H-Y antigen in the blood of an XY mare is consistent with the view that H-Y genes comprise a system of testis determinants. Loss or suppression of a critical portion of H-Y genes and subthreshold expression of H-Y antigen could account for a failure of testicular differentiation, thereby allowing a measure of ovarian development in an XY embryo.
The effect of benzo(a)pyrene on fertility, primordial oocyte number, and ovarian response to pregnant mare’s serum gonadotropin.
Pediatric pharmacology (New York, N.Y.)    January 1, 1980   Volume 1, Issue 2 143-151
Mattison DR, White NB, Nightingale MR.The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) benzo(a)pyrene (BP) reduced the fertility of DBA/2N mice in a dose-dependent fashion. Control mice produced offspring at a rate of 0.91 pups/mouse per week. Treatment with BP at doses of 10, 100, 200, and 500 mg/kg decreased offspring production rates to 0.61, 0.20, zero and zero pups/mouse per week, respectively. BP also destroyed primordial oocytes in similarly treated mice. Treatment with BP at doses of 10, 50, 100, and 500 mg/kg destroyed 20%, 58%, 88%, and 100%, respectively, of the primordial oocytes in DBA/2N mouse ovaries. Dose-response curves ...

Induction of estrus and ovulation by endometrial biopsy in mares with prolonged diestrus.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    December 1, 1979   Volume 175, Issue 11 1196-1197
Hurtgen JP, Whitmore HL.Luteolysis, estrus, and ovulation were induced by endometrial biopsy during three periods of prolonged diestrus in two mares. Serum progesterone concentrations decreased to less than 1 ng/ml within 48 hours after biopsy. Mares were in estrus within 3 days after endometrial biopsy. It was concluded that endometrial biopsy may induce regression of the persistent corpus luteum by stimulating the release of an endogenous uterine luteolysin (prostaglandin).

Changes in concentrations of circulating gonadotropins following administration of equine follicular fluid to ovariectomized mares.
Biology of reproduction    November 1, 1979   Volume 21, Issue 4 867-872 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod21.4.867
Miller KF, Wesson JA, Ginther OJ.The effects of administration of equine follicular fluid (FF) on gonadotropin concentrations in the ovariectomized (OVX) mare were examined. The FF was obtained by aspiration of follicles in ovaries obtained during the summer at a slaughterhouse. Systemic administration of whole equine FF to OVX mares resulted in significant decreases in circulating concentrations of FSH (26.0–74.0% of the pretreatment concentrations depending on dosage). Treatment with FF from which steroids had been removed tended (P0.10) on FSH. Treatment with whole FF initially decreased and then increased the concentrat...
Evaluation of uterine tube function in pony mares.
The Veterinary record    October 20, 1979   Volume 105, Issue 16 364-366 doi: 10.1136/vr.105.16.364
Allen WE, Kessy BM, Noakes DE.Two experimental procedures were investigated in order to assess their usefulness in diagnosing occlusion of the equine uterine tube. The starch grain test, which involves the injection of a starch suspension onto the ovary and the subsequent recovery of starch from the cervix, proved to be safe and reliable. Each tube could be investigated separately. It was found that when starch was injected onto the ovulating ovary on the day of ovulation, there was a delay of four to seven days before starch was recovered from the cervix. The phenolsulphonphthalein (PSP) test, which involves the depositio...
Bacteria isolated from uterine washings from mares in the Sudan.
Equine veterinary journal    October 1, 1979   Volume 11, Issue 4 219-222 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1979.tb01349.x
El Sanousi SM, El Tayeb Amna B, Shadad EY.Uterine washes collected from 200 barren mares were examined at the Khartoum veterinary clinic during the period May 1977 to May 1978. A variety of bacteria was isolated from 77 per cent of the mares investigated. Thirty mares were treated by parenteral injection and intrauterine infusion of the appropriate antibiotics. Twenty-one of these mares conceived, of which 17 delivered normal foals and 4 had early embryonic deaths.

[Seasonal changes in spermatozoas and fertility of stallions in the tropics].
Veterinarni medicina    March 1, 1979   Volume 24, Issue 3 159-165
Cermák O.An attempt was made to express the relationship of spermiological characteristics with the fertility on the basis of seasonal variability of the fertility of stallions and of the ejaculate quality. A positive correlation between the activity of spermatozoa and the fertility ensues from the values of correlation coefficients. There is a negative correlation between the fertility and the concentration of citric acid. In the other characteristics, i.e. in the production of spermatozoa, volume of gel substance, pH, ergothioneine concentration, polarographic and hemolytic activity, the correlation ...
An analysis of stallion fertility rates (foals born alive) from the breeding documents of the Landgestüt Celle over a 158-year period.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 73-77
Merkt H, Jacobs KO, Klug E, Aukes E.An evaluation of the foaling rate achieved in the Hannoverian breed in Germany between 1815 and 1973 showed that during this period no improvement of the reproductive rate was achieved. The decennial foaling percentage remained within 50--60% except for those decades which included the two World Wars and their aftermaths. The annual foaling percentage remained maximal until the number of mares covered/stallion rose above 80 and it also remained high throughout the reproductive life of the stallion. Only in the oldest stallion (32 years) was there a significant lowering of fertility.

Disappearance of spermatozoa from the ejaculates of geldings.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 25-29
Shideler RK, Squires EL, Pickett BW, Anderson EW.Twenty-three geldings were used to determine changes in seminal characteristics following castration and the effect of frequency of ejaculation on these seminal characteristics. In Exp. 1, semen was collected from 8 geldings every other day after castration until the number of spermatozoa per ejaculate was below 1% of the precastration value. An average of 3 ejaculates was required to reduce the number of spermatozoa below this level. In Exp. 2, 15 stallions were castrated and each stallion was assigned to 1 of 3 groups for seminal collection at 7, 14 or 21 days post-castration. The ejaculates...
Fertility of donor mares following nonsurgical collection of embryos.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 1979   Issue 27 383-386
Vogelsang SG, Sorensen AM, Potter GD, Burns SJ, Kraemer DC.Embryos were collected nonsurgically on Day 7 or 8 after ovulation from 7 Quarter horse mares using a modified 30-ml Foley catheter to flush the uterine horn ipsilateral to the recent ovulation with 500 ml TCM-199 containing Hepes buffer. After collection, the uteri were infused with nitrofurazone to reduce the chances of infection due to the procedure. Eleven collections from 7 mares resulted in recovery of 9 embryos and nonsurgical transfer of 4 of these resulted in the birth of one foal. After collections, 8 oestrous cycles averages 22.75 days and 2 extended oestrous cycles were 43 and 59 d...
