Topic:Foals

"Foals" encompasses a stage in the lifecycle of equines with distinct physiological and developmental characteristics. Foals are young horses, typically under one year of age, undergoing rapid growth and development. They require specific nutritional, health, and management practices to support their transition to adulthood. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the growth, development, health challenges, and management practices associated with foals and horses, providing insights into their care and welfare across different life stages.

Parasitology research    July 12, 2011   Volume 110, Issue 2 657-662 doi: 10.1007/s00436-011-2537-7
de Almeida GL, Santurio JM, Filho JO, Zanette RA, Camillo G, Flores AG, da Silva JH, de la Rue ML.Biological control is an alternative method to reduce the population of parasites through natural predators. A promising option of biological control in the reduction of infective larvae on pasture is the use of nematophagous fungi. In this study, the efficacy of the nematophagous fungus Duddingtonia flagrans in controlling gastrointestinal nematode parasites in field-raised horses was tested. Ten foals with an average age of 12 months were divided in two groups: five males constituted the treated group and five females constituted the control group. Each group was introduced in a field of mix...
Pathological changes in horses dying with equine influenza in Australia, 2007.
Australian veterinary journal    July 8, 2011   Volume 89 Suppl 1 19-22 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.2011.00731.x
Begg AP, Reece RL, Hum S, Townsend W, Gordon A, Carrick J.Analysis of pathology results from the 2007 equine influenza (EI) outbreak in Australia indicate that young foals in naïve horse populations are prone to developing broncho-interstitial pneumonia, and that this can be a rare manifestation of EI virus infection in mature horses. All horses may develop secondary bacterial bronchopneumonia, with mature horses more likely to die. EI outbreaks among heavily pregnant mares can result in increased neonatal losses because of premature placental separation and dystocia causing fetal hypoxia.
Premature lactation and retention of a mummified fetus with live birth of the co-twin in a primiparous Morgan mare.

Veterinary microbiology    July 7, 2011   Volume 154, Issue 1-2 156-162 doi: 10.1016/j.vetmic.2011.06.037
Horohov DW, Loynachan AT, Page AE, Hughes K, Timoney JF, Fettinger M, Hatch T, Spaulding JG, McMichael J.Rhodococcus equi is a soil borne bacterium that causes severe morbidity and death in young foals. The economic costs of the disease include loss of life, treatment expenses, veterinary monitoring expenses and, perhaps most importantly, potential reduction in future athletic performance in horses that suffer severe lung abscessations caused by R. equi. Current standard of care for pneumonia caused by R. equi is treatment with a macrolide antimicrobial and rifampicin. However, the hallmark of pneumonia caused by R. equi is severe formation of pyogranulomas and a walling off effect that can preve...
Gestational length in Carthusian broodmares: effects of breeding season, foal gender, age of mare, year of parturition, parity and sire.
Polish journal of veterinary sciences    July 5, 2011   Volume 14, Issue 2 173-180 doi: 10.2478/v10181-011-0027-6
Satué K, Felipe M, Mota J, Muñoz A.The length of gestation in Carthusian broodmares was calculated on the basis of 339 spontaneous full-term deliveries taking place in the 8-year period 1998-2005 from 158 broodmares and 29 stallions in a major farm of Spanish horses of Carthusian strain in southern Spain. Ultrasonography was used to determine follicular dehiscence, 1st day of pregnancy and to confirm conception in mares. Mean GL was 332.4 +/- 12.1 days, and a normal interval of 297-358 days was established for this breed. GL records were grouped on the basis of foal sex (colts or fillies), mating month (between November and Jan...

Theriogenology    June 30, 2011   Volume 76, Issue 5 819-832 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2011.04.014
Franciolli AL, Cordeiro BM, da Fonseca ET, Rodrigues MN, Sarmento CA, Ambrosio CE, de Carvalho AF, Miglino MA, Silva LA.In spite of numerous, substantial advances in equine reproduction, many stages of embryonic and fetal morphological development are poorly understood, with no apparent single source of comprehensive information. Hence, the objective of the present study was to provide a complete macroscopic and microscopic description of the equine embryo/fetus at various gestational ages. Thirty-four embryos/fetuses were aged based on their crown rump length (CRL), and submitted to macroscopic description, biometry, light and scanning microscopy, as well as the alizarin technique. All observed developmental c...
Magnetic resonance imaging in foals with infectious arthritis. Gaschen L, LeRoux A, Trichel J, Riggs L, Bragulla HH, Rademacher N, Rodriguez D.The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of foals with infectious and noninfectious arthritis are described. Six foals with infectious arthritis and three foals with noninfectious arthritis were grouped based on synovial fluid analysis results and examined with radiography and MR imaging. Four out of six foals with infectious arthritis had osseous lesions in MR images indicative of osteomyelitis and only 4/19 lesions were detected on digital radiographs. The three foals with noninfectious arthritis had no osseous lesions in MR images or radiographically. Of the six joints that had osseous ...
Infection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells with neuropathogenic equine herpesvirus type-1 strain Ab4 reveals intact interferon-α induction and induces suppression of anti-inflammatory interleukin-10 responses in comparison to other viral strains.
Veterinary immunology and immunopathology    June 28, 2011   Volume 143, Issue 1-2 116-124 doi: 10.1016/j.vetimm.2011.06.032
Wagner B, Wimer C, Freer H, Osterrieder N, Erb HN.The recent increase in incidence, morbidity, and mortality of neurological disease induced by equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) has suggested a change of virulence of the virus. The exact mechanisms by which EHV-1 induces neurologic disease are not known. Environmental, viral, and host risk factors might contribute to neurological manifestation. Here, we investigated innate interferon-α (IFN-α), interleukin-10 (IL-10) and IL-4 responses after infection of equine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) with EHV-1 using an available cytokine multiplex assay. Three viral strains representing ...
The effect of environment on interferon-gamma production in neonatal foals.
Veterinary immunology and immunopathology    June 28, 2011   Volume 143, Issue 1-2 170-175 doi: 10.1016/j.vetimm.2011.06.030
Sun L, Adams AA, Page AE, Betancourt A, Horohov DW.While interferon-gamma (IFNγ) plays an important role in protection against viral and intracellular bacterial infections, its production in neonates is deficient. Exposure to environmental antigens can promote the maturation of the immune system of neonatal humans and mice. We hypothesize that exposure to high level of microbial components would increase the production of IFNγ in neonatal foals. To test this hypothesis, one group of foals was placed into stalls three times a week for 8 weeks. A second group of foals remained on pasture. Air samples were collected from the barn and pasture fo...
Acute myeloid leukaemia (M6B: pure acute erythroid leukaemia) in a Thoroughbred foal.
Australian veterinary journal    June 24, 2011   Volume 89, Issue 7 269-272 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.2011.00790.x
Forbes G, Feary DJ, Savage CJ, Nath L, Church S, Lording P.A 10-week-old Thoroughbred filly was referred for anaemia of 4 weeks' duration. Haematology revealed severe anaemia and panleucopenia. Cytological examination of bone marrow smears revealed a myeloid to erythroid ratio <0.02:1 (reference range 0.5-2.4:1.0) and an abundance of erythroid precursor cells. The erythroid cell population included rubriblasts, prorubricytes and rubricytes, with only scant numbers of metarubricytes present. There were numerous mitotic erythroid cells, some of which were atypical and megaloblastic. These cytomorphological changes are consistent with pure acute eryth...
Lawsonia intracellularis-specific interferon γ gene expression by peripheral blood mononuclear cells in vaccinated and naturally infected foals.
Veterinary journal (London, England : 1997)    June 22, 2011   Volume 192, Issue 2 249-251 doi: 10.1016/j.tvjl.2011.05.018
Pusterla N, Mapes S, Gebhart C.The cell-mediated immune response to Lawsonia intracellularis, the agent of equine proliferative enteropathy (EPE), was investigated in vaccinated and naturally infected foals. Interferon (IFN)-γ gene expression was determined in peripheral blood mononuclear cells collected from vaccinated (n=6) and control foals (n=6) every 30 days for 180 days following first vaccine administration, and from clinically affected foals (n=16) within 7-10 days of diagnosing EPE. Seroconversion (immunoperoxidase monolayer assay titer ≥60) occurred in 5/6 vaccinated foals between 60 and 90 days following the f...

Perrucci S, Buggiani C, Sgorbini M, Cerchiai I, Otranto D, Traversa D.Cryptosporidium infection was molecularly investigated in mares and in their neonatal foals for which the occurrence of foal heat diarrhoea was also assessed. Thirty-seven mare/foal pairs were included in the study. All foals were born in the same stud farm during 2006-2008 breeding seasons. Two faecal samples, one prior to and one after delivery were collected from each mare, whereas three faecal samples were taken from each foal, i.e. at 8, 10 and 12 days of age. All samples (74 from mares and 111 from foals) were divided into two aliquots, one of which was examined for the presence of Crypt...
Risk factors for the presence and extent of Developmental Orthopaedic Disease in the limbs of young horses: Insights from a count model.
Preventive veterinary medicine    June 12, 2011   Volume 101, Issue 1-2 96-106 doi: 10.1016/j.prevetmed.2011.05.009
Lepeule J, Seegers H, Rondeau V, Robert C, Denoix JM, Bareille N.Developmental Orthopaedic Disease (DOD) in limb joints is frequent, can cause lameness and is a major cause of economic losses for the horse breeding industry. Studies on risk factors for DOD usually dichotomise the outcome to presence/absence without considering the extent of the disease, which can be appreciated by the number or the severity of the lesions. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of growth, exercise conditions and feeding practices on the number of radiographic findings (RF) of DOD in a cohort of horses, assuming that the risk factors associated with the presence of ...
Maternal dexamethasone treatment in late gestation induces precocious fetal maturation and delivery in healthy Thoroughbred mares.
Equine veterinary journal    June 3, 2011   Volume 43, Issue 4 424-429 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.2010.00306.x
Ousey JC, Kölling M, Kindahl H, Allen WR.The foal requires an active hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis for organ maturation and post natal survival. Prenatal administration of synthetic glucocorticoids may provide an effective method for inducing fetal maturation safely in the mare. Objective: To determine whether dexamethasone administered to late pregnant mares: 1) will induce fetal maturation and precocious delivery; 2) is safe to use and 3) to identify endocrine responses in the mare and foal. Methods: Pregnant Thoroughbred mares received either 100 mg dexamethasone i.m. (treated n = 5) or 50 ml saline i.m. (control n = 5)...

Research in veterinary science    May 28, 2011   Volume 93, Issue 1 172-176 doi: 10.1016/j.rvsc.2011.05.003
Barbey C, Cauchard S, Cauchard J, Laugier C, Hartke A, Petry S.Rhodococcus equi remains a significant pathogen, causing severe pneumonia in foals. The development of vaccines and serologic diagnosis could be greatly facilitated by studying the humoral immune response to this equine pathogen. In this study, a crude extract of R. equi ATCC 33701-secreted proteins combined with the Montanide® ISA70 adjuvant was found to be highly immunogenic in mice with the highest titer of 99,000 on day 42 after the first subcutaneous immunization. This immune response was dependent on the quantity of proteins injected and the presence of adjuvant. By dot-blotting, eight ...
Observations on development of natural infection and species composition of small strongyles in young equids in Kentucky.
Parasitology research    May 26, 2011   Volume 109, Issue 6 1529-1535 doi: 10.1007/s00436-011-2460-y
Lyons ET, Kuzmina TA, Tolliver SC, Collins SS.Early development and maturation of species of small strongyles have not been studied extensively. Most information is on the first appearance of strongyle eggs in feces of foals. However, species cannot be determined in this manner because of similarity of the morphological features of the eggs. To determine more definitive knowledge on development and species composition of natural infections of small strongyles, eight equid foals were necropsied and examined at various ages (31 to 92 days of age). The entire contents of the large intestine were examined, and all worms (6,671) recovered were...
