Airflow mechanics in models of equine obstructive airway disease under conditions simulating exercise. Effects of respiratory tract obstructions on ventilatory mechanics in horses exercising at high speeds were tested with a fibreglass replica of the airways (nares to mainstem bronchi) of an adult horse. Mechanical properties of pathological equine superficial digital flexor tendons. The objective of this study was to mechanically characterise superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) lesions. Repair of a deep digital tendon deficit in a horse using a polypropylene implant. A yearling horse was treated for a chronic wound with a 4 cm deficit in the deep digital tendon. The gap in the tendon was bridged with paired polypropylene braided implants designed for use as a ligament augmentation device. Uncomplicated healing and return to function occurred.

An outbreak of abortion in mares associated with Salmonella abortusequi infection. An abortion outbreak occurred in a herd of 38 horses, 26 of which were pregnant mares. Twenty-one mares aborted between 5-10 months of gestation. In no case were there indications of impending abortion. Pathoanatomical, histopathological, virological and bacteriological examinations were carried out on 4 aborted fetuses. Histopathology identified Gram-negative bacteria compatible with salmonella in all 4 placentae. Expression of the nonstructural protein NS1 of equine influenza A virus: detection of anti-NS1 antibody in post infection equine sera. The nucleotide sequence of the nonstructural protein NS1 of the influenza virus A/equine 2/Suffolk/89 was determined and found to be 97% identical to that of A/equine 2/Miami/63. Lameness and pleural effusion associated with an aggressive fibrosarcoma in a horse. An 8-year-old Thoroughbred gelding was admitted for evaluation of chronic lameness of the left scapulohumeral joint of 3 months' duration. Cortisol concentrations in post competition horse urine: a French and British survey. The purpose of the present report was to estimate the population parameters of cortisol concentrations in urine, an endogenous hormone used as a 'doping' agent and for which an international threshold (1.0 micrograms/ml) has been proposed. Effects of treadmill inclination on kinematics of the trot in Dutch Warmblood horses. To evaluate the effects of uphill trotting on stride characteristics, 6 well trained Dutch Warmblood horses trotted at 4 m/s on a horizontal and on an inclined (6%) treadmill. This was done under 3 different conditions, unloaded, mounted by an experienced 90 kg rider and loaded with 90 kg of lead, to study whether extra weight provoked more or different alterations than the incline per se. Cardio-histopathological observations on aborted equine fetuses infected with equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1). Twenty-five aborted equine fetuses infected with equid herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) were examined cardio-histopathologically. The main changes in the heart consisted of interstitial myocarditis and intramyocardial vascular lesions accompanied by degeneration and necrosis of the cardiac myocytes. Ground reaction forces in horses, assessed from hoof wall deformation using artificial neural networks. An artificial neural network (ANN) was developed to investigate whether hoof wall deformation could be used to determine ground reaction forces (GRF) in horses. The ANN was taught this relationship under certain conditions and was able to generalise this knowledge to conditions for which it was not trained before. Severe polysaccharide storage myopathy in Belgian and Percheron draught horses. A severe myopathy leading to death or euthanasia was identified in 4 Belgian and 4 Percheron draught horses age 2-21 years. Noninvasive photoelastic method to show distribution of strain in the hoof wall of a living horse. A photoelastic method used for materials testing in industry was adapted to show the distribution of strain through the hoof wall in the living horse. Strain was a change in length per unit length in the material of the loaded hoof wall compared with the unloaded condition. Modified carotid artery transposition for repetitive arterial blood gas sampling in large animals. A modified surgical procedure for creation of a carotid loop for repeated percutaneous sampling of arterial blood gas was performed on 8 Holstein heifers and 14 horses. This approach permitted sampling of blood gas via fine-needle aspiration (one to three times daily) and/or catheterization for extended periods. Very high pressures are required to cause stress failure of pulmonary capillaries in thoroughbred racehorses.
