Topic:Immunoglobulin G

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the predominant antibody isotype found in the bloodstream of horses and is integral to their immune defense mechanisms. It is produced by B lymphocytes and plays a significant role in identifying and neutralizing pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. IgG is involved in various immune functions, including opsonization, complement activation, and neutralization of toxins. In equine medicine, measuring IgG levels is important for assessing the immune status of foals, especially in cases of failure of passive transfer (FPT) of maternal antibodies. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the structure, function, and clinical implications of Immunoglobulin G in equine health.

The American journal of tropical medicine and hygiene    July 21, 2001   Volume 64, Issue 5-6 283-289 doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.2001.64.283
Rocha-Campos AC, Gonçalves LR, Higashi HG, Yamagushi IK, Fernandes I, Oliveira JE, Ribela MT, Sousa-E-Silva MC, da Silva WD.Contact with Lonomia obliqua caterpillars results in a bleeding syndrome characterized by hemorrhage and blood coagulation disturbances. Conventional therapy using antifibrinolytics or cryoprecipitates has been unable to treat pathophysiologic alterations. As antivenoms are effective therapy for treatment of victims of venomous animals, a process of manufacturing a specific antilonomic serum by immunizing horses with Lonomia caterpillar bristle extracts (LBE) was developed. Lonomia caterpillar bristle extracts exhibited several protein bands on SDS-PAGE, induced blood coagulation abnormalities...

Possible role of autoimmunity to spermatozoa in idiopathic infertility of stallions.
Journal of reproduction and fertility. Supplement    January 1, 2000   Issue 56 23-30
Kenney RM, Cummings MR, Teuscher C, Love CC.Testicular degeneration is a major cause of subfertility in stallions, although an aetiological diagnosis cannot be made in most cases. In the present study, autoimmune testicular degeneration was induced and evaluated in stallions by immunizing stallions with their own spermatozoa mixed with an adjuvant. The factors evaluated included changes in semen quality and testicular histology. A large decrease in sperm number and quality was observed in response to sperm autoantigens. An ELISA test specific for antisperm antibodies was developed which enabled antibody titres in serum, seminal plasma a...

Results of the prevalence survey indicated that IgG antibodies to Neospora were present in 62 (11.5%) of t...
Detection and effects on platelet function of anti-platelet antibody in mule foals with experimentally induced neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia.
Journal of veterinary internal medicine    December 10, 1999   Volume 13, Issue 6 534-539 doi: 10.1892/0891-6640(1999)013<0534:daeopf>2.3.co;2
Ramirez S, Gaunt SD, McClure JJ, Oliver J.Horse mares carrying mule foals were immunized during the last trimester of pregnancy with whole acid-citrate-dextrose-anticoagulated donkey blood to experimentally induce neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia occurred in the neonatal mule foals born to immunized horse mares within 24 hours after ingestion of their dams' colostrum. Mule foals born to mares not immunized with donkey blood did not develop thrombocytopenia. These findings suggest that antibodies may have been directed against a donkey platelet antigen present in the mule foals but not present in their dams. The o...
