A preliminary study of hyperextension of the carpal joint in the racing Thoroughbred. A photographic study of the angles of 71 carpal joints of horses at the end of a race has shown that overextension of the joint is normal at this stage. Further study is needed to determine the factors which may influence hyperextension, and whether they are relevant to carpal injury.

Management factors associated with stereotypic and redirected behaviour in the thoroughbred horse. A greater knowledge of the effect of management factors is required to investigate the ontogeny of abnormal behaviour in the stabled horse. A postal survey of racehorse (flat) trainers yielded information about 22 yard and management factors. The relationship of the factors to the prevalence of abnormal behaviour was analysed by logistic regression. Endoscopy of the upper respiratory tract during treadmill exercise: a clinical study of 100 horses. Endoscopy of the upper respiratory tract was performed in 100 horses during high speed treadmill exercise. Reasons for endoscopy were a history of an abnormal noise during exercise in 75 horses, poor performance in 17 horses and to evaluate the results of upper respiratory tract surgery in 8 horses. Behavioural studies in healthy ponies subjected to short-term forced recumbency aiming at an adjunctive treatment in an acute attack of laminitis. The authors postulated that a period of forced recumbency during an acute attack of laminitis may counteract the disabling effects on the secondary epidermal laminae. Radiographic and endoscopic study of horses performing an oral based stereotypy. There is confusion in the veterinary literature concerning the definition of oral based stereotypies in the horse. This study reports the use of fluoroscopy and endoscopy during cribbiting/wind-sucking in afflicted horses. [Horse controls–animal welfare in equine sports]. In the course of ten horse-shows 248 horses were submitted to a short veterinary examination in the course of the horse controls that were introduced in 1991. In 143 horses (57.6%) animal cruelty preventive deficiencies were found. The results of the horse controls are compared to previous results and discussed from the point of view of animal protection.
Observations on the anatomy and pathology of the palmar intercarpal ligaments in the middle carpal joints of thoroughbred racehorses. Ten carpi from juvenile Thoroughbred horses were dissected in detail to record the anatomy of the palmar intercarpal ligaments (PICLs). Equine motor neuron disease: findings in 28 horses and proposal of a pathophysiological mechanism for the disease. Over a three and one-half year period, 28 adult horses were diagnosed with equine motor neuron disease (EMND). The most commonly identified environmental risk factors for a horse having EMND were absence of grazing for more than a year and provision of poor quality hay. A description is given of 75 features present in the normal tarsus of the standing horse which are apparent due to visible skin contours overlying them. Characteristics of cyclicity in maiden thoroughbred mares in the United Kingdom. The characteristics of the cyclicity of 12 maiden thoroughbred mares kept in two groups were studied over a total of 58 cycles. On average, oestrus lasted 5.3 days and in 60 per cent of the cycles ovulation occurred in the last two days of oestrus. Oestrus and ovulation tended to be synchronised in each group of mares. Is dentition an accurate indication of the age of a horse? It is widely accepted that the age of a horse can be determined from an examination of its teeth, but there is no evidence that the accuracy of the systems of ageing used has been validated. A dental record was made of 80 horses of known age. There was a good correlation between the actual and apparent age of the horses up to five years, but older horses showed much greater variability and accuracy declined markedly after 11 years of age. Effect of body direction on heart rate in trailered horses. To determine whether body direction in a trailer affects the degree to which a horse is excited (and presumably stressed) during transport, heart rates were measured in 8 Thoroughbred geldings transported over a 32-km route of county roads while tethered facing forward or backward in a 4-horse stock trailer. Dominant inheritance of overo spotting in paint horses. Analysis of selected studbook records of the American Paint Horse Association, consisting of 687 foals sired by 13 overo stallions from non-overo mares, supports the inheritance of overo spotting as an autosomal dominant gene. More than one gene may control patterns registered as overo. Additional studies are necessary to explain the sporadic occurrence of overo spotting from nonspotted quarter horse parents and to confirm the inheritance of overo spotting in other breeds.

Selection of quarter horses affected with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis by show judges. Thirty offspring of a Quarter Horse sire, affected by hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HPP), were examined electromyographically. On the basis of the detection of or lack of spontaneous activity with high frequency myotonic or pseudomyotonic discharges, the horses were diagnosed as being affected (14 horses) or unaffected (16 horses) with HPP. Epidemiological observations on sarcoids in a population of donkeys (Equus asinus). An epidemiological study of equine sarcoid in a population of 4126 donkeys showed that the peak incidence of the disease was 15.2 cases per 100 animal-years and occurred in animals in their fourth year of life. The crude incidence of the disease was 0.6 cases per 100 animal-years. The disease occurred most frequently in younger, male animals during their first five years in the population. Sedation of horses with romifidine and butorphanol. Combinations of romifidine and butorphanol were used to sedate 55 horses for a variety of surgical, therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Eighteen of the horses were given the drugs separately, romifidine first followed by butorphanol four minutes later, and 37 were given the drugs together. The levels of sedation and ataxia were assessed and graded, and there were no statistically significant differences between the two methods of administration. Helmets and horseback riders. To determine patterns of helmet use and attitudes toward helmets among horseback riders, we analyzed a subset of data (n = 1,834) from a cross-sectional mail survey of horseback riders conducted from July to December 1991. Is horse riding a dangerous recreation for young girls? A study at emergency departments of Lahti City Hospital and Päijat-Häme Central Hospital, Lahti. Horse-related injuries form a notable part of sports and leisure time accidents. 54% of the injured were female riders under the age of 20 years. The most serious injuries were upper extremity ones. Over one third of the riders had suffered previously from horse-related injuries.

A survey of cardiac auscultatory findings in horses. Auscultation was used to examine 545 horses for cardiac murmurs and some arrhythmias. The most significant finding was the high prevalence of right-sided holosystolic or pansystolic plateau-type murmurs compatible with a diagnosis of tricuspid regurgitation in National Hunt racing Thoroughbreds of all ages (16.4%). In vivo investigation of communication between the distal intertarsal and tarsometatarsal joints in horses and ponies. The frequency of communication between the tarsometatarsal and distal intertarsal joints was investigated in 27 horses and 12 ponies. After the injection of diluted latex into the tarsometatarsal joints using the plantarolateral approach, the horses and ponies were walked for 200 meters. Latex was found in the distal intertarsal joints of 19 of 73 tarsi (26% communication) at necropsy. In 3 tarsi, latex was also found in the proximal intertarsal and tarsocrural joints.
