Topic:Pulmonary Health

Pulmonary health in horses encompasses the study of the respiratory system's function, structure, and disorders within equine species. This area of research addresses various conditions affecting the lungs and airways, such as equine asthma, exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH), and infectious respiratory diseases. The respiratory system's efficiency is vital for horses, particularly those involved in athletic activities, as it influences performance and overall well-being. Research in pulmonary health investigates diagnostic methods, treatment options, and preventive measures for maintaining respiratory function in horses. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the equine respiratory system, as well as the management and therapeutic approaches for respiratory conditions in horses.
Pulmonary and systemic effects of inhaled endotoxin in control and heaves horses.
Equine veterinary journal    May 16, 2001   Volume 33, Issue 3 311-318 doi: 10.2746/042516401776249732
Pirie RS, Dixon PM, Collie DD, McGorum BC.To investigate whether inhaled endotoxin contributes to airway inflammation and dysfunction in stabled horses, control (n = 6) and asymptomatic heaves (previously termed chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)-susceptible (n = 7) horses were given inhalation challenges with 20, 200 and 2,000 microg of soluble Salmonella typhimurium Ra60 lipopolysaccharide (LPS). LPS inhalation induced a dose-dependent neutrophilic airway inflammatory response in both groups. Inhalation with 2,000 microg of LPS also induced detectable lung dysfunction in the heaves group. LPS inhalation did not alter clinical sc...

Clenbuterol administration does not enhance the efficacy of furosemide in attenuating the exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension in Thoroughbred horses.
Journal of veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics    February 13, 2001   Volume 23, Issue 6 389-395 doi: 10.1046/j.1365-2885.2000.00293.x
Manohar M, Goetz TE, Rothenbaum P, Humphrey S.The stimulation of pulmonary beta2-adrenergic receptors causes a decrease in vascular resistance. Thus, the present study was carried out to examine whether concomitant administration of clenbuterol-a beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist, to horses premedicated with furosemide would attenuate the exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension to a greater extent than furosemide alone, and in turn, affect the occurrence of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). Experiments were carried out on six healthy, sound, exercise-trained Thoroughbred horses. All horses were studied in the control...

Journal of veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics    December 7, 2000   Volume 23, Issue 5 317-322 doi: 10.1046/j.1365-2885.2000.00262.x
Manohar M, Goetz TE, Rothenbaum P, Humphrey S.The present study was carried out to examine whether intravenously administered pentoxifylline-a phosphodiesterase inhibitor which increases red blood cell deformability and decreases blood viscosity-would attenuate the magnitude of exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension in healthy, fit Thoroughbred horses and in turn, diminish the occurrence of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH). Experiments were carried out on six healthy, sound, exercise-trained Thoroughbred horses. Hemodynamic data were collected at rest, and during exercise performed at 8 and 14 m/sec on 3.5% uphill g...
Intratracheal clenbuterol in the horse: its pharmacological efficacy and analytical detection.
Journal of veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics    December 7, 2000   Volume 23, Issue 4 251-260
Harkins JD, Robinson NE, Woods WE, Lehner AF, Smith MD, Gates RS, Fisher M, Tobin T.Clenbuterol, a beta2 agonist/antagonist, is the only bronchodilator approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in horses. The Association of Racing Commissioners International classifies clenbuterol as a class 3 agent, and, as such, its identification in post-race samples may lead to sanctions. Anecdotal reports suggest that clenbuterol may have been administered by intratracheal (IT) injection to obtain beneficial effects and avoid post-race detection. The objectives of this study were (1) to measure the pharmacological efficacy of IT dose of clenbuterol and (2) to determine the ...

Equine veterinary journal    October 19, 2000   Volume 32, Issue 5 393-400 doi: 10.2746/042516400777591147
Robinson NE, Olszewski MA, Boehler D, Berney C, Hakala J, Matson C, Derksen FJ.During a trial to determine the dose response to the beta2-adrenergic agonist pirbuterol, we judged the severity of airway obstruction by use of a clinical scoring system and compared this to objective data obtained by quantitative measures of lung function. Six horses affected by recurrent airway obstruction were used in this trial. Four hundred and sixty-eight measurements of lung function and clinical scores were obtained from 13 measurement periods when horses received each of 6 doses of pirbuterol. Scores of 1-4 were assigned to degree of nasal flaring and abdominal effort and summed for ...
Relationship of pulmonary arterial pressure to pulmonary haemorrhage in exercising horses.
Equine veterinary journal    October 19, 2000   Volume 32, Issue 5 379-384 doi: 10.2746/042516400777591066
Langsetmo I, Meyer MR, Erickson HH.Exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) is characterised by blood in the airways after strenuous exercise and results from stress failure of the pulmonary capillaries. The purpose of this experiment was to establish a threshold value of transmural pulmonary arterial pressure at which haemorrhage occurs in the exercising horse. Five geldings, age 4-14 years, were run in random order once every 2 weeks at 1 of 4 speeds (9, 11, 13, 15 m/s); one day with no run was used as a control. Heart rate, pulmonary arterial pressure and oesophageal pressure were recorded for the duration of the run. T...
Immunohistochemical detection of virulence-associated Rhodococcus equi antigens in pulmonary and intestinal lesions in horses.
Journal of comparative pathology    October 18, 2000   Volume 123, Issue 2-3 186-189 doi: 10.1053/jcpa.2000.0392
Mariotti F, Cuteri V, Takai S, Renzoni G, Pascucci L, Vitellozzi G.Two horses with Rhodococcus equi infection were examined post mortem by an immunohistochemical method (peroxidase-antiperoxidase; PAP) with a monoclonal antibody (Mab 10G5) to the 15-17 kDa antigen of R. equi. One of the horses was also examined bacteriologically, R. equi being isolated in culture. Immunolabelling with this Mab was marked and widespread. On the other hand, the immunohistochemical reactivity of infected macrophages with a polyclonal antibody specific for lysozyme was slight. Thus, Mab 10G5 would appear to be a useful diagnostic reagent in R. equi infection, with or without cult...

Research in veterinary science    July 6, 2000   Volume 68, Issue 3 249-253 doi: 10.1053/rvsc.1999.0373
Raidal SL, Love DN, Bailey GD, Rose RJ.The effect of strenuous exercise on the functional capacity of pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) and bronchoalveolar lavage-derived lymphocytes was determined in eight horses prior to and after 7 weeks of training. Strenuous exercise had no effect on the total cell count or the percentage of live cells in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples prior to or following training. However, training was associated with a significant increase in the total cell count of pre-exercise BAL samples and a significant reduction in the percentage of live cells in post-exercise samples. Strenuous exercise was...
Exercise alters fractal dimension and spatial correlation of pulmonary blood flow in the horse.
Journal of applied physiology (Bethesda, Md. : 1985)    June 14, 2000   Volume 88, Issue 6 2269-2278 doi: 10.1152/jappl.2000.88.6.2269
Sinclair SE, McKinney S, Glenny RW, Bernard SL, Hlastala MP.We determined the changes in fractal dimensions and spatial correlations of regional pulmonary blood flow with increasing exercise in race horses (n = 4) by using 15-microm fluorescent microspheres. Fluorescence was measured to quantitate regional blood to 1.3-cm(3) samples (n = 1,621-2,503). Perfusion distributions were characterized with fractal dimensions (a measure of spatial variability) and spatial correlations. On average, the fractal dimension decreased with exercise (trot 1.216 to gallop 1.173; P < 0. 05) despite a variable fractal dimension at rest. Spatial correlation of flow to ...
Pulmonary vascular pressures of thoroughbred horses exercised 1, 2, 3 and 4 h after furosemide administration.
Journal of veterinary pharmacology and therapeutics    June 10, 2000   Volume 23, Issue 2 81-89 doi: 10.1046/j.1365-2885.2000.00252.x
Magid JH, Manohar M, Goetz TE, Baker GJ, Ulbricht R, Bontkowski S, Ghantous S.Furosemide premedication of horses 4 h prior to exercise significantly attenuates exercise-induced pulmonary capillary hypertension which may help diminish the severity of exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage. As pulmonary hemodynamic effects of furosemide may be mediated via a reduction in plasma volume (which is most pronounced 15-30 min postfurosemide administration, with plasma volume recovering thereafter), we hypothesized that administration of furosemide at intervals shorter than 4 h before exertion may be more effective in attenuating the exercise-induced rise in pulmonary capillary ...
