Topic:Ultrasound

Ultrasound in horses is a diagnostic imaging technique that utilizes high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the horse's internal structures. It is commonly used in veterinary medicine to evaluate soft tissues, tendons, ligaments, and organs. This non-invasive method allows for real-time visualization of physiological and pathological conditions, aiding in the diagnosis and management of various equine health issues. Ultrasound is particularly valuable for assessing musculoskeletal injuries, reproductive health, and abdominal conditions in horses. This page compiles peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the application, methodology, and advancements in ultrasound technology within equine veterinary practice.
Real-time ultrasound measure of the fetal eye (vitreous body) for prediction of parturition date in small ponies.
Theriogenology    January 19, 2006   Volume 66, Issue 2 331-337 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2005.11.019
Turner RM, McDonnell SM, Feit EM, Grogan EH, Foglia R.Ultrasonographic fetal eye measures have been used to estimate gestational age of the fetus in light horse mares. However, fetal eye measures have not been published for smaller pony breeds. This study was conducted to develop reference ranges for ultrasonographic measures of fetal eyes in small ponies for the purpose of predicting days before parturition (DBP) when breeding or ovulation dates are unknown. Twenty-three Shetland-type pony mares were studied across one (n = 10) or two (n = 13) gestations in 2004 (18 pregnancies) and 2005 (18 pregnancies). Measurements of fetal eyes were obtained...

On the day of pre-treatment ovulation (Day 0), horse mares were randomly assigned to receive PGF (Lutalyse; 10 mg/mare, i.m.) on Day 3 (17 mares) or Day 10 (17 mares). Beginning on either Days 3 or 10, follicle and CL data and blood samples were collected daily until post-trea...
An early endometrial vascular indicator of completed orientation of the embryo and the role of dorsal endometrial encroachment in mares.
Biology of reproduction    October 19, 2005   Volume 74, Issue 2 337-343 doi: 10.1095/biolreprod.105.047621
Silva LA, Ginther OJ.The spherical equine embryonic vesicle is mobile throughout the uterine lumen for several days before becoming fixed in the caudal segment of a uterine horn on Day 16 (ovulation = Day 0). Orientation refers to the position of the embryo proper at the periphery of the vesicle relative to the position of the mesometrial attachment. In mares, the embryonic pole of the vesicle is antimesometrial after completion of orientation. Day of vesicle fixation, differential thickening of the endometrium near the mesometrial attachment, and orientation of the embryonic vesicle were studied in 30 ponies, usi...
Septic pleuritis and abdominal abscess formation caused by Rhodococcus equi in a foal.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    September 30, 2005   Volume 227, Issue 6 960-919 doi: 10.2460/javma.2005.227.960
Valdes A, Johnson JR.A 3-month-old female Arabian horse was evaluated because of fever, respiratory distress, lethargy, and decreased appetite of 5 days' duration. Pleural effusion was diagnosed on the basis of ultrasonographic and radiographic examinations. Cytologic examination of pleural fluid collected via thoracocentesis revealed septic inflammation; bacteriologic culture of a sample of that fluid yielded Rhodococcus equi. A large intra-abdominal mass adjacent to the body wall was identified ultrasonographically. A specimen of the mass was collected via aspiration; the specimen was identified cytologically as...
Diagnosis and surgical removal of a granulosa-theca cell tumor in a mare.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    September 13, 2005   Volume 46, Issue 7 644-646
Maurice KT.An 8-year-old mare showed stallion-like behavior and aggressiveness. A granulosa-theca cell tumor was tentatively diagnosed based on history, transrectal palpation, and ultrasonography, and surgically removed. Serological levels of testosterone and inhibin were elevated. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. The mare recovered and by day 45 could be turned out with other horses. Une jument de 8 ans a manifesté un comportement et de l’agressivité semblables à ceux d’un étalon. Une tumeur de cellule de la granulosa-theca a été provisoirement diagnostiquée, en se fond...
Fertility in the mare after repeated transvaginal ultrasound-guided aspirations.
Animal reproduction science    September 7, 2005   Volume 88, Issue 3-4 299-308 doi: 10.1016/j.anireprosci.2005.01.002
Mari G, Barbara M, Eleonora I, Stefano B.Ovum pick-up (OPU) by transvaginal ultrasound guided aspiration (TUGA) is a procedure applied in equine-assisted reproduction programs such as oocyte transfer and in vitro embryo production. Despite a large number of studies reporting that it is a repeatable and safe technique, little information is available about the effect of repeated punctures on fertility of mares. Moreover, even if flushing follicles improves the oocyte recovery rate, to our knowledge the efficiency of flushing estrous and diestrous follicles has not been evaluated. The aims of the present study were (1) evaluate if repe...

Carpal collateral ligament desmopathy in three horses.
The Veterinary record    August 16, 2005   Volume 157, Issue 7 197-201 doi: 10.1136/vr.157.7.197
Desmaizières LM, Cauvin ER.The radiographic and ultrasonographic findings in three horses with severe damage to the collateral ligaments of the carpus, associated with degenerative joint disease, are described. The horses remained lame despite prolonged rest and medical management, primarily because of the progression of the joint disease. Ultrasonography was found to be an accurate method for diagnosing the injury to the ligaments and is recommended as part of a routine examination in suspected carpal injuries.
A non-invasive method of tendon force measurement.
Journal of biomechanics    August 9, 2005   Volume 38, Issue 10 2124-2129 doi: 10.1016/j.jbiomech.2004.09.012
Pourcelot P, Defontaine M, Ravary B, Lemâtre M, Crevier-Denoix N.The ability to measure the forces exerted in vivo on tendons and, consequently, the forces produced by muscles on tendons, offers a unique opportunity to investigate questions in disciplines as varied as physiology, biomechanics, orthopaedics and neuroscience. Until now, tendon loads could be assessed directly only by means of invasive sensors implanted within or attached to these collagenous structures. This study shows that the forces acting on tendons can be measured, in a non-invasive way, from the analysis of the propagation of an acoustic wave. Using the equine superficial digital flexor...
Comminuted fracture of the distal sesamoid bone and distal rupture of the deep digital flexor tendon. Hoegaerts M, Pille F, De Clercq T, Fulton IC, Saunders JH.A 10-year-old show jumper was evaluated for an acute severe lameness (grade 4 of 5) of the right foreleg. During weight bearing, the toe of the affected limb rotated dorsally suggesting rupture of the deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT). Upon radiographic examination of the hoof, a severe erosion at the flexor surface and a parasagittal fracture of the distal sesamoid bone were found. Ultrasonographic examination confirmed rupture of the DDFT. These findings were confirmed on post-mortem examination. Prior to the acute lameness, the horse was treated with corticosteroid injections into the podot...
Equine neonatal thoracic and abdominal ultrasonography.
The Veterinary clinics of North America. Equine practice    July 30, 2005   Volume 21, Issue 2 407-vii doi: 10.1016/j.cveq.2005.05.001
Porter MB, Ramirez S.Pathologic disorders of the equine neonate often develop shortly after foaling as a result of prematurity, dystocia, trauma, or septicemia. Recognition of these disorders requires routine patient assessment along with diagnostic aids, including abdominal and thoracic ultrasonography. Fortunately, modern technology affords today's equine practitioners the opportunity to use ultrasonography to advance their practice, and it is the authors' hope that this article might help in those efforts.

Methods: Normal forelimb SDF tendons (n=24) of 12 horses were divided into unoperated, sham-operated, and implanted (terylene fibre implant) groups. Horses were assessed for lameness and ultrasonographic changes to SDF tendons at intervals up to 48 weeks post-operatively. After euthanasia, SDF tendons were collected for histological and ultrastructural examination. Histological sections were examined for alcian blue staining intensity, cellularity, fibril bundle al...
Equine fetal gender determination from mid- to advanced-gestation by ultrasound.
Theriogenology    July 5, 2005   Volume 64, Issue 3 568-571 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2005.05.013
Bucca S.Equine fetal gender can be easily determined by ultrasound between Days 120 and 210. A combination of transrectal and transabdominal ultrasound examinations can visualise fetal sex organs up to 8 months of gestation. Early equine fetal sexing techniques, performed between approximately Days 58 and 70, are aimed at identifying the position of the genital tubercle. A wider diagnostic window, a diagnosis based on several parameters, and the ease of identification of fully developed fetal primary sex organs make gender diagnosis in mid- to advanced-gestation a preferable technique.
Assessment of feto-placental well-being in the mare from mid-gestation to term: transrectal and transabdominal ultrasonographic features.
Theriogenology    July 5, 2005   Volume 64, Issue 3 542-557 doi: 10.1016/j.theriogenology.2005.05.011
Bucca S, Fogarty U, Collins A, Small V.Ultrasound assessment of feto-placental well-being has found its application in the equine field, as a valid diagnostic tool. Most reports on equine fetal parameters focus on advanced to late gestation. The aim of the present study was to further validate the technique of ultrasound evaluation of the equine fetal environment, by extending its application to earlier stages of pregnancy. Fetal parameters were collected (on 150 pregnancies) over a 3-year period. Data included in the study were selected according to the clinical behaviour of the mare, the neonate/fetus and fetal membranes at the t...
Adiponectin and leptin are related to fat mass in horses.
Veterinary journal (London, England : 1997)    June 29, 2005   Volume 172, Issue 3 460-465 doi: 10.1016/j.tvjl.2005.05.002
Kearns CF, McKeever KH, Roegner V, Brady SM, Malinowski K.Plasma concentrations of adiponectin and leptin were measured in 23 mature Standardbred mares (age: 10+/-3 years) and 12 weanling fillies (10 Quarter Horse/Belgian crossbreds and two Quarter Horses; aged: 4+/-3 months) to test the hypothesis that adipocytokines are proportional to adiposity in horses. Rump fat thickness was measured using B-mode ultrasound and percent body fat (% fat) calculated using a published formula for the estimation of fatness in horses. Plasma adiponectin and leptin were determined using radioimmunoassay. In the absence of purified equine adiponectin or leptin, results...

Australian veterinary journal    June 28, 2005   Volume 82, Issue 11 686-692 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.2004.tb12155.x
Begg LM, Hughes KJ, Kessell A, Krockenberger MB, Wigney DI, Malik R.A 20-year-old Welsh Mountain Pony (212 kg) mare was initially presented for a chronic cough, fever, weight loss and low grade abdominal pain. She later developed dyspnoea, tachypnoea and exercise intolerance. The presence of multiple masses (up to 17 cm diameter) in the pulmonary parenchyma was established using lateral thoracic radiography and transthoracic ultrasonography. Encapsulated, budding yeasts were observed in smears made from transtracheal washings and needle aspirates of the pulmonary lesions. Cryptococcus gattii (synonym: Cryptococcus neoformans variety gattii; Cryptococcus bacill...
In vivo effect of interleukin-1beta and interleukin-1RA on oocyte cytoplasmic maturation, ovulation, and early embryonic development in the mare.
Reproductive biology and endocrinology : RB&E    June 22, 2005   Volume 3 26 doi: 10.1186/1477-7827-3-26
Caillaud M, Duchamp G, Gérard N.A growing body of evidence suggests that the interleukin-1 system is involved in periovulatory events. Previous work from our lab demonstrated that in the mare, interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) increases the ovulatory rate of metaphase II oocytes. The present study was conducted to analyze in vivo the effect of IL-1 on oocyte cytoplasmic maturation, ovulation and pregnancy rate. In the present work, IL-1beta (experiment 1, n = 13; experiment 2, n = 25) and interleukin-1RA (IL-1RA; experiment 1, n = 25) were injected intrafollicularly by using the transvaginal ultrasound-guided injection method. In...

Methods: 10 horses. Methods: Suspensory ligament desmitis was induced in both hind limbs of each horse by use of 2 collagenase injections (administered 2 weeks apart) in each suspensory ligament. Two weeks after the second injection, the right hind limb of each horse was treated with ESWT (3 treatments at 3-week intervals); the left hind limb ...
Transcervical endoscope-guided emptying of a transmural uterine cyst in a mare.
The Veterinary record    May 24, 2005   Volume 156, Issue 21 679-682 doi: 10.1136/vr.156.21.679
Rambags BP, Stout TA.An 18-year-old Friesian mare with a large intrauterine cyst was examined by transrectal ultrasonography. There were several small to moderately sized intraluminal endometrial cysts, one of which connected via the myometrium to a large subserosal cyst, thereby effectively forming a 'transmural' cyst complex. During a videohysteroscopy, the intraluminal part of this transmural cyst was removed by electrocoagulation via a polypectomy snare. It was then possible to drain the large subserosal part of the cyst into the uterine lumen by transrectal massage, thereby confirming the presence of the tran...

Radiography, ultrasonography, synoviocentesis, and arthroscopy were used to diagnose postoperative lameness that occurred in the limb used for blood pressure monitoring. Results: Horses ...
Neovascularisation in chronic tendon injuries detected with colour Doppler ultrasound in horse and man: implications for research and treatment.
Knee surgery, sports traumatology, arthroscopy : official journal of the ESSKA    April 27, 2005   Volume 13, Issue 6 505-508 doi: 10.1007/s00167-005-0648-3
Kristoffersen M, Ohberg L, Johnston C, Alfredson H.Recent research on chronic painful Achilles tendons in humans using ultrasonography and immunohistochemistry, has demonstrated an association between neurovascular ingrowth and tendon pain. In horses, chronic debilitating tendon conditions are well-known to be very difficult to treat, and the background to impaired function and pain is not scientifically clarified. In a collaborative research project between the Sports Medicine Unit in Umeå and Strömsholm Equine Hospital, grey-scale ultrasonography (US) and colour Doppler (CD) examination were performed in ten horses with chronic tendon inju...
Evaluation of gastrointestinal activity patterns in healthy horses using B mode and Doppler ultrasonography.
The Canadian veterinary journal = La revue veterinaire canadienne    April 14, 2005   Volume 46, Issue 2 134-140
Mitchell CF, Malone ED, Sage AM, Niksich K.Healthy adult horses were examined by using transabdominal ultrasonography to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate activity of the jejunum, cecum, and colon with B mode and Doppler techniques. Doppler ultrasound was used to assess jejunal peristaltic activity. Examinations were performed on multiple occasions under imposed colic evaluation conditions, including fasting, nasogastric intubation, and xylazine sedation. In fasted horses, jejunal visibility was increased and jejunal, cecal, and colonic activity was decreased. The stomach was displaced ventrally and was visualized ventral to th...
