An evaluation of the accuracy of ageing horses by their dentition: can a computer model be accurate? The prediction of the age of a horse from its dentition has been widely accepted as an accurate technique, but recent reports have questioned this belief. In this study the dental features of 434 thoroughbreds of known age were documented and a multiple regression equation was calculated from the 13 dental features which had the highest correlation with true age. Case-control study of risk factors for development of pleuropneumonia in horses. Risk factors for development of pleuropneumonia were determined by reviewing medical records of 45 horses with pleuropneumonia and 180 control horses examined between Jan 1, 1980 and Jan 1, 1990. Age-related morphometrical changes of arteries of uterine wall in mares. To investigate the morphological changes of uterine wall arteries associated with the progression of age in Thoroughbred broodmares, uterine wall arteries from 13 mares, aged 2 to 31 years, were studied by routine histomorphometry. [Heart rate fluctuations in the horse at rest: (1) Investigation of heart rate changes by spectrum analysis]. The heart rate fluctuations at rest were studied in order to explore the emotionality of the horses by isolating the influence of the autonomic control. This paper presents a method of spectral analysis which was used to analyse the heart rate variability in the frequency domain. Prothrombotic events in the prodromal stages of acute laminitis in horses. Prothrombotic changes occurring in the prodromal stages of carbohydrate-induced laminitis were investigated. Hemostatic alterations were evaluated by determining platelet counts, platelet survival, activated partial thromboplastin time, one-stage prothrombin time, and monocyte procoagulant activity. Seroepidemiological and molecular evidence for the presence of two H3N8 equine influenza viruses in China in 1993-94. Naproxen (+6-methoxy-[alpha-methyl]-2-naphthalene acetic acid) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used for the treatment of inflammatory conditions in horses. Paraneoplastic bullous stomatitis in a horse. An adult horse with a 2-month history of anorexia, ataxia, and oral blisters had developed these clinical signs just prior to the appearance and growth of a cervical mass. Bullous stomatitis was characterized histologically as subepidermal clefting. Borna disease (BD) is a progressive poliomeningoencephalomyelitis which occurs naturally in horses and sheep. Ovuplant (deslorelin STI), when used in estrous mares with a follicle > or = 30 mm, reliably causes acceleration of ovulation and assurance that > 80% of the treated mares will ovulate within 48 hours. Infectious tenosynovitis. Infectious tenosynovitis is treated similarly to infectious arthritis. The principles of treatment include an early diagnosis and immediate therapy. Therapy should include use of systemic and local antimicrobials and sheath lavage and drainage. Fibrosis and adhesions can be minimized with passive range of motion exercises, intrathecal hyaluronate, and phenylbutazone therapy. Restrictive fibrosis may be treated successfully by annular ligament resection.

Contrast radiography provides a clear survey of the size, shape, and location of extratendovaginal fluid-filled cavities, distended bursa, and tendon sheaths and demonstrates intersynovial communication. Ultrasonography effectively demonstrates Achilles tendon injury, slippage of the SDFT off the summit of the calcaneus, assorted ligamentous injuries, and cystic or solid extratendovaginal masses. Repair of a full-thickness gastric rupture in a horse. A 14-year-old Thoroughbred broodmare was evaluated for signs of mild to moderate abdominal pain of 5 hours' duration. Ventricular tachycardia associated with exhaustive exercise in a horse. Ventricular tachycardia was diagnosed in a 12-year-old unconditioned Appaloosa gelding after a 3-day trail ride. Initial signs were those of abdominal discomfort, ileus, and dehydration. Medical treatment included IV administration of lactated Ringer's solution. Ligaments associated with joints. This article contains a short introduction to the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of ligaments associated with diarthrodial joints. Individual ligaments are discussed on a regional basis as forelimb, distal limb, and hindlimb. Emphasis is placed on the anatomy of the ligaments because this is the key to sound clinical application of their involvement in joint disease. There are few conditions of diarthrodial joints that do not involve their associated ligaments, and this role may be in causative, diagnostic, and therapeutic or convalescent considerations.
Detection of African horse sickness viruses by dot-blot hybridization using a digoxigenin-labelled probe. In order to develop a non-radioactive dot-blot hybridization assay, for the detection of African-horse sickness virus (AHSV), genome segment 7 from 9 serotypes was amplified by RT-PCR. The resulting PCR products were denatured, immobilized on nylon membranes and then hybridized to a non-radioactive digoxigenin-labelled probe.
