For moderate sample throughput the method provides a viable alternative to radioimmunoassay screening and has advantages over the latter technique due to its flexibility, specificity and ability to detect a number of steroids in a single analysis. Full automation of the gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric analysis is an additional feature of the methodology.
