The effect of season on the ovulatory response of Merino ewes to serum from pregnant mares.
Journal of reproduction and fertility    November 1, 1980   Volume 60, Issue 2 425-429 doi: 10.1530/jrf.0.0600425
Gherardi PB, Lindsay DR.Groups of 50 ewes were injected with serum from pregnant mares on 5 occasions, 3 months apart, and ovulation rate was estimated at laparoscopy. In Exp. 1, new ewes were used at each time and 3 dose rates (identical to 400, 630 and 1000 i.u. PMSG) were studied. In Exp. 2, the same ewes were used throughout and only 1 dose was given (1000 i.u.). In both experiments the response in ovulation rate of ewes varied significantly throughout the year, with the lowest response in spring (September) and the highest in autumn (March). The ewes in Exp. 2 were as responsive at the end as at the beginning of...

Temperature of the artificial vagina and its effect on seminal quality and behavioral characteristics of stallions.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    October 15, 1980   Volume 177, Issue 8 720-722
Hillman RB, Olar TT, Squires EL, Pickett BW.Stallion semen was collected, using artificial vaginas at 44 to 46, 48 to 50, and 52 to 54 C, to study the effects of temperature on seminal quality and sexual behavior. The temperature of the artificial vagina had no significant effect on motility, gel volume, gel-free seminal volume, total seminal volume, pH, number of mounts per ejaculate, total time to ejaculation, or seminal temperature. Spermatozoa were collected, then exposed to water-bath temperatures of 38, 45, 49, or 53 C for 1 minute. Mean motility was similar after exposure to temperatures of 38 or 45 C, but exposure to temperature...
Hydatidosis in donkeys in Morocco.
Annals of tropical medicine and parasitology    October 1, 1980   Volume 74, Issue 5 519-521 doi: 10.1080/00034983.1980.11687379
Pandey VS.The lungs and livers of 429 adult donkeys from different parts of Morocco were examined for hydatid cysts; 4·2% of lungs were infected and 2·1% of livers. Most of the cysts were small and had very hard thick walls; 61% of the donkeys had only one hydatid cyst; 78·5% of them were sterile and 29% caseated or calcified.
Absorption, excretion and tissue distribution of stable zinc and 65zinc in ponies.
Journal of animal science    October 1, 1980   Volume 51, Issue 4 896-902 doi: 10.2527/jas1980.514896x
Schryver HF, Hintz HF, Lowe JE.Absorption excretion and tissue distribution of stable Zn and 65Zn in mature ponies were studied in three experiments. In the first experiment, the metabolism of stable, dietary Zn and intravenously administered 65Zn was studied in three ponies in a 3 X 3 Latin square design. The ponies were fed a corn and beet pulp diet containing 35 mg Zn/kg or the same diet with 250 or 520 mg of supplemental Zn as ZnO. The ponies absorbed and retained more stable Zn when fed 250 mg of supplemental Zn that when fed the basal diet alone or the basal diet plus 520 mg of supplemental Zn. The ponies retained mor...
Hypogammaglobulinaemia in foals: prevalence on Victorian studs and simple methods for detection and correction in the field.
Australian veterinary journal    October 1, 1980   Volume 56, Issue 10 469-473 doi: 10.1111/j.1751-0813.1980.tb02556.x
Pemberton DH, Thomas KW, Terry MJ.The prevalence of hypogammaglobulinaemia in 82 young foals was determined. Twelve foals were considered clinically abnormal at birth and ten died within two weeks. All of these foals were hypogammaglobulinaemic. Seven (10%) of the other 70 apparently normal foals were hypogammaglobulinaemic despite having suckled normally. Three of these foals developed significant disease and one died at one month of age. Rapid detection of foals with low serum immunoglobulin levels was achieved by adapting the zinc sulphate turbidity test to partially evacuated blood collection tubes. This permitted test to ...
Echocardiography in assessing mitral valve motion in 3 horses with atrial fibrillation.
Equine veterinary journal    October 1, 1980   Volume 12, Issue 4 181-184 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1980.tb03421.x
Wingfield WE, Miller CW, Voss JL, Bennett DG, Breukels J.Echocardiography is a non-invasive, safe means of assessing intracardiac structures and their motion. In the normal motion of the mitral valve there is anterior motion noted during atrial systole. In 3 horses with atrial fibrillation the mitral valve motion had no anterior motion to correspond with atrial contractions. Quinidine returned the electrocardiogram of one horse to a sinus rhythm after which echocardiography demonstrated the reappearance of the anterior motion of the mitral valve.

Assessment of wall shear stress in arteries, applied to the coronary circulation.
Cardiovascular research    October 1, 1980   Volume 14, Issue 10 568-576 doi: 10.1093/cvr/14.10.568
Benson TJ, Nerem RM, Pedley TJ.Time dependent wall shear rates cannot be directly or accurately measured in arteries using presently available techniques. Here a simple method is presented for calculating them from a single measured velocity waveform (either centreline or cross-sectionally averaged velocity). The method involves only Fourier analysis and the application of given formulae, and it is expected to be approximately valid in any segment of artery which has no branches or sharp curves for a distance of several diameters. It is shown, however, that a frequency response of 30 Hz is required in the velocity measuring...

Characterization of gangliosides from equine kidney and spleen.
Journal of biochemistry    October 1, 1980   Volume 88, Issue 4 1119-1128 doi: 10.1093/oxfordjournals.jbchem.a133065
Gasa S, Makita A.Gangliosides were isolated from equine kidney and spleen, and their carbohydrate and lipid moieties were characterized. Among the long-chain bases, considerable proportions of trihydroxy bases (42.3 to 61.2% of the total bases), in which phytosphingosine was predominant were found in all the ganglioside classes. The other major base was sphingosine. Among the constituent fatty acids, long-chain acids (with a carbon number of more than 20), comprised approximately half the total acids, with some alpha-hydroxy and mono-unsaturated acids. By means of sequential hydrolysis with glycosidases couple...
Vascular supply of the equine stifle joint.
American journal of veterinary research    October 1, 1980   Volume 41, Issue 10 1621-1625
Updike SJ, Diesem CD.The vascular supply of the equine stifle joint was investigated, using latex vascular injections of pelvic limbs from 3 adult horses and 6 ponies. Vessels were grossly dissected to the small arteriole level. The primary source of blood supply was the femoral artery and its branches which entered the joint on the caudal and medial surfaces. The superficial vasculature arose from the caudal branch of the deep circumflex iliac artery cranially and laterally, and from the saphenous and descending genicular arteries medially. The deep vasculature arose from the popliteal artery and its branches on ...
Isolation of Yersinia enterocolitica from selected animal species.
American journal of veterinary research    October 1, 1980   Volume 41, Issue 10 1667-1668
Wooley RE, Shotts EB, McConnell JW.Yersinia enterocolitica was isolated from 5 of 1,002 fecal samples taken from laboratory rats and mice, hamsters, dogs, cats, pigs, cattle, horses, and deer. Two isolates were from dogs (2 of 202; 1%) and 1 from a pig (1 of 107; 0.9%). The 3 isolates were biotype 1. Atypical environmental Y enterocolitica was isolated from a cow (1 of 141; 0.7%) and a horse (1 of 101; 1%). Isolates were not recovered from the other animal species.

Equine veterinary journal    October 1, 1980   Volume 12, Issue 4 175-180 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1980.tb03420.x
Essén B, Lindholm A, Thornton J.Fibre characteristics and enzyme activities were determined for the gluteus, semitendinosus, vastus lateralis and triceps brachii muscles of 55 Standardbred trotters of different ages. Four fibre types (I, IIA, IIB, IIC) were demonstrated by histochemical staining of myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase after preincubation at different pH values. Type II fibres predominated in all the muscles and the type IIA/IIB ratio was higher in horses over 5 years than in younger horses, except in the vastus in which the IIA/IIB ratio did not change with age. The vastus had the highest proportion of type...
Antibody activities of immunoglobulins in anti-leptospiral horse sera.
Japanese journal of medical science & biology    October 1, 1980   Volume 33, Issue 5 239-247 doi: 10.7883/yoken1952.33.239
Otani S, Arimitsu Y, Akama K.Antileptospiral sera from hyperimmunized horses were fractionated by gel filtration on Sephadex G-200 or by starch block electrophoresis. The fractions were examined quantitatively for leptospiricidal, agglutinating and complement fixing activities. The leptospiricidal activity was higher in the 78 globulin fraction than in the 19S globulin fraction, while the agglutinating activity was shared by both the fractions being higher in the 19S fraction. Complement fixing activity was found evenly in both the fractions. Leptospiricidal and complement fixing activities were higher in gamma-globulin t...
Volvulus of the large colon in the horse.
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association    October 1, 1980   Volume 177, Issue 7 629-630
Barclay WP, Foerner JJ, Phillips TN.Volvulus of the large colon was diagnosed at surgery in 25 horses during a 4-year period. Two horses had a recurrence of the condition after successful correction. Mucosal necrosis was found to be a grave prognostic sign, as it was a consistent finding in horses that died at the time of surgery. Long-term colon dysfunction was not clinically evident in surviving horses.
Disorders of the thoracolumbar spine of the horse–a survey of 443 cases.
Equine veterinary journal    October 1, 1980   Volume 12, Issue 4 197-210 doi: 10.1111/j.2042-3306.1980.tb03427.x
Jeffcott LB.The survey comprised 443 horses, referred to the clinical department of the Equine Research Station, with a history of a thoracolumbar (TL) complaint. A wide range of lesions were capable of producing back problems and more than one condition or site of injury was found in 75 animals (17 per cent). There were 103 horses (19.7 per cent) with no evidence of damage to the TL spine or its associated structures. In 66 of these cases, clinical signs were attributed to a variety of hindlimb lamenesses and, in 37, no specific diagnosis could be made. Soft tissue injury was diagnosed in 203 cases (38.8...

Studies on the physiopathology of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in horses. I. Clinical signs.
The Onderstepoort journal of veterinary research    September 1, 1980   Volume 47, Issue 3 159-162
Littlejohn A.Twenty cases of chronic cough originating in the lung and associated with loss of performance were clinically examined. The physical signs observed were compared with those observed in a control series of 38 clinically normal horses. Reduced work tolerance, coughing for more than 3 months and abnormal pulmonary sounds (râles) were primary signs of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Forced abdominal expiratory efforts and pumping of the anus were regarded as confirmatory signs. Neither nasal discharge nor increased marginal distance was found to be a reliable sign of COPD. The mean ...
The disposition of calcium within parathyroid tissue.
Hormone and metabolic research = Hormon- und Stoffwechselforschung = Hormones et metabolisme    September 1, 1980   Volume 12, Issue 9 475-480 doi: 10.1055/s-2007-999176
Glick DM, Mockel J.The disposition of 45Ca was studied in equine parathyroid gland slices. This preparation was shown to be viable by its ability to carry out protein synthesis, by the responsiveness of its respiration to effectors of oxidative phosphorylation, and by its calcium-inhibitable PTH secretion. 45Ca accumulates in the slices as the extracellular calcium is raised through the range in which physiological serum calcium concentration lies. The tissue slices behave as if they have no calcium pump: (a) depriving the cells of energy by treatment with antimycin A does not admit more calcium to the tissue, (...
Equine connective tissue tumors contain unintegrated bovine papilloma virus DNA.
Journal of virology    September 1, 1980   Volume 35, Issue 3 962-964 doi: 10.1128/JVI.35.3.962-964.1980
Amtmann E, Müller H, Sauer G.Bovine papilloma virus (BPV) appears to be the etiological agent of common equine connective tissue tumors. We investigated the physical state of the viral DNA within such tumors and found no indication for integration into the host genome. The BPV genomes were present as free circular episomes. Two equine sarcoids were shown to contain multiple copies of free circular BPV type 1 (BPV-1) DNA. When the tumors were digested with several single-cut restriction enzymes, there were only form III BPV-1 DNA sequences could be revealed. One of the sarcoids contained, apart from wild-type BPV-1 DNA, a ...
An epidemic of Getah virus infection among racehorses: properties of the virus.
Research in veterinary science    September 1, 1980   Volume 29, Issue 2 162-167
Kono Y, Sentsui H, Ito Y.A virus (Sakai) which had been recovered from an outbreak of disease in horses was found to be a small spherical enveloped RNA virus with a diameter of approximately 70 nm and a buoyant density of 1.22 g per ml. It grew well and produced a cytopathic effect in a variety of cell cultures; it was sensitive to organic solvents, heat and low pH. It agglutinated goose erythrocytes in a 0.35 M sodium chloride solution at an optimum pH of 6.2 and was antigenically identical or closely related to Getah virus, a member of the alphavirus subgroup of the Togaviridae.
Smooth muscle cells in the testicular capsule of the horse, pig and sheep.
Journal of anatomy    September 1, 1980   Volume 131, Issue Pt 2 263-273
Chacon-Arellano JT, Woolley DM.Smooth muscle cells are present in the tunica albuginea testis of the horse, pig and sheep. typical fusiform muscle cells constitute a distinct layer up to 0.3 micrometer thick in the horse; there are fewer muscle cells, mainly of the branched form, in the pig; whereas in the sheep the muscle component is least well developed, with some cells intermediate in form between smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts (myofibroblasts). Attention is drawn to the continuity of this capsular muscle with the smooth muscle associated with the vasculature of the spermatic cord in the horse. This association sug...
