Antistreptolysin O titer in horses. Antistreptolysin O (ASO) titers were determined in the sera of 532 horses from stud farms and 436 working horses from small farms. A statistically significant correlation was seen between the ASO titer and the age of the horses. Diurnal changes in the hematological indices in the blood of racing Arabian horses. In 8 stallions and 6 mares of pure Arabian horses the diurnal changes in the number and certain parameters of red and white blood cells were studied. All of them showed distinct diurnal changes but they did not fulfill the conditions of circadian rhythm according to Halberg. It was found that most of peaks occurred during the dark phase of 24 hr period except the percentage of eosinophils, erythrocyte diameters and cell rate sedimentation. The majority of indices studied showed the higher mean diurnal levels in the mares than in the stallions.
Influence of age and breed of equid on plasma copper and zinc concentrations. Plasma ceruloplasmin activities and plasma Cu and Zn concentrations were determined in 215 clinically normal equids of various ages and breeds. Newborn foals, regardless of breed, were hypocupremic, compared with adolescent and mature horses. The mean plasma Cu concentration of newborn Standardbred-Thoroughbred (STD-TB) foals was 2.9 mumol/L, which was about one-sixth of plasma Cu concentrations of mature horses. Comparison of specificity of human and horse leucocyte proteinases with synthetic peptide substrates. Highly purified horse leucocyte proteinases 1, 2A and 2B hydrolyze synthetic substrates which are decomposed also by human leucocyte elastase but they are unable to hydrolyze typical substrates of cathepsin G. Thus in distinction to other mammalian species horse leucocytes are devoid of cathepsin G and contain only elastases.

Lysosomal arylsulfatases A and B (aryl-sulfate sulfohydrolases, EC 3.1.6.1) from horse leukocytes were purified about 680-fold and 70-fold, respectively, starting from a crude extract of the azurophil and specific granules of leukocytes, by affinity, ion exchange, and gel filtration chromatography. Removing formaldehyde from embalmed cadavers by percolating the body cavities with dilute ethanol. Formaldehyde was removed from embalmed animal cadavers by pumping ethanol (20%) through the pleural and peritoneal cavities of 4 goats, 4 cows and 4 horses. The goats were percolated intermittently for 7 days and the large animals continuously for 72 h. Just after opening the body cavities, samples of air close to the organs were collected and analyzed for formaldehyde using a spectrofluorimetric method. The concentration of formaldehyde in the air samples was in goats 0.45 +/- 0.44 microgram/l (mean +/- SD), cows 0.42 +/- 0.29 microgram/l and horses 0.43 +/- 0.25 microgram/l.
The relationship between lipofuscin and neuromelanin in some sites of the nervous system of the horse. Histochemical and cytochemical features of neuronal pigment in the spinal cord, and in the sympathetic and spinal ganglia of the adult horse have been studied. A comparison of the mineral composition of milk of domestic and captive wild equids (Equus przewalski, E. zebra, E. burchelli, E. caballus, E. assinus). Milk samples were obtained in early and/or late lactation from Przewalski horses, Hartmann's zebras, Grant's zebras, domestic horses, ponies and a mule mare made pregnant by embryo transfer. Comparative scanning electron-microscopic study of the lingual papillae in two species of domestic mammals (Equus caballus and Bos taurus). 1. Gustatory Papillae. The morphological characteristics of bovine and equine gustatory lingual papillae are compared by scanning electron microscopy. A reverse phase liquid chromatographic procedure is described for the simultaneous determination of oxfendazole [2-(methoxycarbonylamino)-5-phenylsulfinylbenzimidazole] and trichlorfon [(2,2,2-trichloro-1-hydroxyethyl)phosphonic acid dimethyl ester] in equine paste. A retrospective study of equine infectious anemia based on the canadian control program. Equine infectious anemia in Canada was reviewed for the period January 1976 to December 1981. The human and ecological factors prevailing in Canada are deemed instrumental with respect to the evolution of the disease. Over 95% of Holstein cross-breeds, 28% of sheep (local mixed breeds) and 18% of goats (local mixed breeds) examined from 18 August to 4 September 1983 were infested with the southern cattle tick, Boophilus microplus Canestrini. Comparison of neutrophil elastases and of neutrophil protease inhibitors in the horse and man. Neutral neutrophil protease, elastase activities, and cytosol protease inhibitors of these enzymes of horses and man were compared. Human neutrophils had 5 times the elastase activity of equine neutrophils, and neutral protease activity was approximately 50% greater in human neutrophils than that in equine neutrophils. The use of a single complement fixation test technique in bovine brucellosis, Johne’s disease, dourine, equine piroplasmosis and Q fever serology. The same techniques may be used in the complement fixation test (CFT) for the serological diagnosis of bovine brucellosis, Johne's disease (paratuberculosis), dourine, equine piroplasmosis and Q fever (caused by Coxiella burnetii). Comparison of the bacterial and fungal flora in the pharynx of normal horses and horses affected with pharyngitis. A total of 43 horses were used for the study of the pharyngeal bacterial flora. The median value of the number of bacteria in the group of 19 normal horses was 3.8 x 10(4) cfu/g of secretions.
