Bilberry - Feed Ingredient
Bilberry, also known as Vaccinium myrtillus, is a small, dark-blue fruit native to Europe and closely related to the North American blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum). The fruit, leaves, and extracts are used in dietary supplements and animal feed products for their content of anthocyanins, flavonoids, and other antioxidant compounds.
In equine feed or supplements, bilberry is occasionally included for its phytochemical content. It is not a primary nutrient source but may be valued for its bioactive compounds. The berries are typically dried and ground into powder or processed into extracts. There are no major feeding concerns noted with bilberry, although its effects have not been well studied in horses.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Bilberry as an ingredient.
