Birch Leaves - Feed Ingredient
Birch leaves, typically derived from species such as the silver birch (Betula pendula) or white birch (Betula alba), are occasionally included in herbal or forage-based equine supplements. They contain various bioactive constituents, including flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and essential oils.
In equine formulations, birch leaves are primarily used for their diuretic and mild anti-inflammatory properties. Traditionally, they have been employed to support urinary tract function and to assist in the management of fluid balance. Their antioxidant content may also provide general support for detoxification processes and metabolic function.
While generally considered safe when used appropriately, birch leaves should be fed in moderation. High doses may pose a risk of irritating the kidneys or increasing fluid loss, particularly in horses with pre-existing renal issues or those under intense physical stress.
