Camelina Meal - Feed Ingredient

Camelina meal is a byproduct of oil extraction from the seeds of the Camelina sativa plant, also known as false flax. After the oil is pressed from the seeds, the remaining material is ground into a meal used as a feed ingredient.

In equine nutrition, camelina meal provides moderate protein, digestible fiber, and residual oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids. It is included in formulations to enhance the nutritional profile, particularly for fat and fiber content. However, the digestibility of its protein in horses is not well studied.

The meal may contain glucosinolates and other compounds typical of brassica family plants. Modern processing and controlled inclusion rates help limit potential negative effects.
