Canola Meal - Feed Ingredient

Canola meal is a byproduct of oil extraction from canola seeds (Brassica napus or Brassica rapa). After the oil is removed through mechanical pressing or solvent extraction, the remaining meal is processed into a protein-rich feed ingredient. Canola meal is widely used in animal nutrition as an alternative protein source to soybean meal.

In equine nutrition, canola meal provides a moderate level of crude protein along with a well-balanced amino acid profile. Notably, it contains higher levels of methionine compared to many other plant-based protein sources. Methionine is an essential amino acid involved in protein synthesis, muscle maintenance, and hoof and coat health. While canola meal is lower in lysine than soybean meal, its methionine content makes it a valuable component of equine diets requiring high-quality plant protein.
