Cellulose - Feed Ingredient
Cellulose is an insoluble, complex carbohydrate that forms the primary structural component of plant cell walls. It consists of long chains of glucose molecules linked by β(1→4) glycosidic bonds, which are indigestible by mammalian enzymes. Because it is not broken down in the small intestine, cellulose does not contribute any digestible energy.
In equine feeds, cellulose is included as a source of dietary fiber. It supports gut motility and promotes healthy hindgut fermentation by microbial populations. Cellulose may be derived from purified plant sources or be present as a component of fibrous ingredients such as beet pulp, soybean hulls, or alfalfa meal.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Cellulose as an ingredient.
