Chestnut Extract - Feed Ingredient

Chestnut extract is derived from the bark or wood of chestnut trees, most commonly the sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa). It is primarily valued for its high content of hydrolyzable tannins, particularly ellagitannins.

In equine feeds and supplements, chestnut extract is used for its astringent and antioxidant properties. The tannins it contains may help modulate microbial populations in the gut, bind to certain proteins, and support gastrointestinal health.

However, tannins can also bind to dietary proteins and minerals, potentially reducing their digestibility and absorption if used at high levels or over extended periods.

The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Chestnut Extract as an ingredient.
