Chloride - Feed Ingredient
Chloride is an essential electrolyte and mineral required by horses for maintaining fluid balance, osmotic pressure, and acid-base equilibrium within the body. It exists predominantly in the extracellular fluid and is typically associated with sodium as sodium chloride (common salt) in equine diets. Chloride is involved in the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which is necessary for digestion.
In equine feed formulations, chloride is most commonly provided through ingredients like sodium chloride, potassium chloride, or magnesium chloride. These compounds are included to help meet the horse’s electrolyte requirements, particularly under conditions of heat stress, sweating, or intense physical activity when electrolyte losses are increased.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Chloride as an ingredient.
