Cod Liver Oil - Feed Ingredient
Cod liver oil is a nutrient-dense oil extracted from the livers of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). It is traditionally obtained through gentle cooking and pressing of the livers, followed by purification to remove impurities and stabilize the oil. This marine-derived ingredient is valued for its naturally high levels of fat-soluble vitamins and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.
In equine nutrition, cod liver oil is used primarily as a source of vitamin A and vitamin D, along with the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These long-chain omega-3s are more biologically active than shorter-chain plant-based forms like alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and are more effective in modulating inflammatory processes in the body.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Cod Liver Oil as an ingredient.
