Extruded maize is corn that has been processed using high heat, moisture, and pressure, then shaped through a die to form expanded, cooked particles. This extrusion process gelatinizes the starch, significantly enhancing its digestibility and palatability for horses.

In equine nutrition, extruded maize is used as a high-energy feed ingredient. The improved starch availability reduces the risk of undigested starch reaching the hindgut. However, due to its high non-structural carbohydrate content, extruded maize should be used with caution for horses with metabolic sensitivities.
