Gaultheria procumbens - Feed Ingredient
Gaultheria procumbens, commonly known as wintergreen, is a low-growing evergreen shrub native to North America. The leaves of the plant are the primary source of wintergreen oil, which contains high levels of methyl salicylate—a compound with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.
In traditional medicine, wintergreen has been used topically for muscle and joint discomfort. However, methyl salicylate is toxic in large amounts and can be absorbed through the skin or gastrointestinal tract.
Gaultheria procumbens is not recommended for use in equine nutrition due to the risk of salicylate toxicity. There is no research supporting its safety or efficacy in horses.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Gaultheria procumbens as an ingredient.
