Glycerol tributyrin, also known as tributyrin, is a triglyceride composed of three butyric acid molecules esterified to a glycerol backbone. It serves as a source of butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid involved in gut health and cellular energy metabolism.
In equine nutrition, glycerol tributyrin may be included in specialized supplements aimed at supporting intestinal integrity and function. Once ingested, it is broken down in the digestive tract to release butyrate, which may help support epithelial cell health in the hindgut.
