Ground Barley - Feed Ingredient
Barley is a cereal grain used in equine feeds as a source of starch-based energy. It has a harder kernel and lower fiber content than oats, with moderate levels of protein and fat. Because raw barley is less digestible in horses, it is typically processed before feeding.
Ground barley refers to whole barley that has been mechanically milled into a fine or coarse meal. Grinding improves digestibility by increasing surface area for enzymatic action. It is commonly used in textured or pelleted feeds. Due to its high starch content, it should be fed cautiously in horses at risk for starch-related disorders such as laminitis or insulin dysregulation.
