Ground Flaxseed (Linseed) - Feed Ingredient

Ground flaxseed is derived from the seeds of the Linum usitatissimum plant, which are finely milled without removing the oil. This process retains the seed’s natural fat content, making whole ground flaxseed an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). The grinding process breaks down the seed coat, improving digestibility and nutrient absorption, making it easier for the horse to utilize its beneficial compounds.

In equine diets, whole ground flaxseed is valued for its high-fat content, which provides a source of cool energy and supports skin and coat health. It is commonly included in feeds or supplements to help balance omega-6 to omega-3 ratios, especially in horses consuming grain-based diets. Compared to flaxseed meal, which has had most of its oil removed, whole ground flaxseed contains a higher concentration of essential fatty acids while offering slightly lower protein and fiber levels.

The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Ground Flaxseed (Linseed) as an ingredient.
