Gypsiferous Shale - Feed Ingredient
Gypsiferous shale is a sedimentary rock that contains both shale (a fine-grained material composed of clay minerals) and gypsum (calcium sulfate dihydrate). It forms in geological environments where gypsum deposits become intermixed with shale layers.
In animal nutrition, including equine applications, gypsiferous shale is not commonly used as a direct feed ingredient. However, gypsum itself (from purified sources) may occasionally be included in mineral supplements as a source of calcium and sulfur.
Due to its mixed mineral composition and the presence of potentially indigestible components like clay and silicates, raw gypsiferous shale is generally unsuitable for feeding. If included in feed or supplements, its mineral content must be carefully evaluated and verified as safe for equine consumption.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Gypsiferous Shale as an ingredient.
