Humates - Feed Ingredient
Humates are naturally occurring organic compounds derived from the decomposition of plant and animal matter, typically sourced from materials such as leonardite, lignite, or peat. They primarily contain humic acid, fulvic acid, and trace minerals. In animal nutrition, humates are used as functional additives and are not considered direct nutrient sources.
In equine feed and supplement formulations, humates are included for their potential influence on digestive efficiency, nutrient absorption, and gut environment modulation. They may bind toxins in the gastrointestinal tract and influence microbial populations, although specific effects can vary depending on the humate source and composition.
Because humates act through non-specific binding, they may also bind to beneficial nutrients or orally administered medications, potentially reducing their availability. This interaction should be considered when humates are included in diets containing targeted nutrient supplementation or veterinary treatments.
Their application is based largely on anecdotal evidence, as controlled research in horses remains limited.
