Lactic Acid - Feed Ingredient
Lactic acid is an organic acid, produced through fermentation by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) such as Lactobacillus species. The L-form is the biologically active isomer most relevant in animal nutrition. Lactic acid is commonly used in feed manufacturing as an acidifier, preservative, and pH regulator.
In equine feed applications, lactic acid is primarily included as a feed additive to lower feed or gut pH, inhibit spoilage organisms, and promote microbial stability. By acidifying the feed, it helps reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and molds in feedstuffs, contributing to feed safety and shelf stability.
