Lupins - Feed Ingredient
Lupins are legume seeds derived from plants of the Lupinus genus, commonly used as a source of protein and energy in equine diets. They are rich in digestible fiber, essential amino acids, and moderate levels of oil, making them a valuable ingredient in horse feeds. Lupins are typically fed in their processed form, such as crushed, extruded, or heat-treated, to improve digestibility and reduce the presence of anti-nutritional factors.
Unlike some other legume seeds (like peas), lupins are naturally low in starch, making them a suitable energy source for horses requiring controlled starch intake. However, certain varieties of lupins contain alkaloids, which can be toxic if consumed in large amounts. Modern cultivars used in animal feeds, known as sweet lupins, have been selectively bred to contain minimal alkaloid levels.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Lupins as an ingredient.
