Magnesium Chloride - Feed Ingredient

Magnesium chloride is an inorganic compound composed of magnesium and chlorine, typically found in the hexahydrate form (MgCl₂·6H₂O) when used in feed applications. It is highly soluble in water and is often derived from natural brine sources or seawater through evaporation processes.

In equine nutrition, magnesium chloride is used as a supplemental source of magnesium, an essential macro-mineral involved in neuromuscular function, enzyme activity, and energy metabolism. Magnesium plays a key role in muscle contraction and relaxation, and its adequacy is important for normal nerve transmission and cardiovascular health.

Magnesium chloride is valued for its high bioavailability and rapid absorption when compared to some other magnesium salts. It may be used in pelleted feeds, top-dress supplements, or electrolyte blends. Excessive intake can lead to soft stools or diarrhea, so inclusion rates should be carefully managed based on the horse’s total dietary magnesium intake and physiological needs.
