DHA Algae - Feed Ingredient
DHA algae refers to algae-derived sources of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid. These microalgae are cultivated specifically for their high DHA content and processed into oil or meal forms for inclusion in feed and supplements.
DHA is one of the most biologically active omega-3 fatty acids and plays a significant role in supporting cellular membrane structure, neurological function, and modulation of inflammatory responses. In equine nutrition, DHA from algae is often used in place of marine-based oils or when a plant-based source of long-chain omega-3s is desired.
Compared to plant-based omega-3 fatty acids such as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) found in flaxseed or chia, DHA offers more direct and potent anti-inflammatory support. This is because ALA must first be converted within the body to EPA and DHA, a process that is inefficient in horses. Algae-derived DHA circumvents this limitation by supplying the bioactive form directly
