Medium Chain Triglycerides - Feed Ingredient
Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are a type of fat composed of medium-chain fatty acids, typically containing 6 to 12 carbon atoms. Common examples include caprylic acid (C8), capric acid (C10), and lauric acid (C12). These triglycerides are naturally found in coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and dairy fat, though commercial MCTs are typically derived from coconut or palm kernel oil through a process known as fractionation.
In equine feeds and supplements, MCTs are used as an easy-to-digest calorie source. They are associated with various health benefits in other species, including support for gut health, immune modulation, and metabolic efficiency, but no specific research has been conducted in horses to confirm these effects.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Medium Chain Triglycerides as an ingredient.
