Micronized Barley - Feed Ingredient
Micronized barley is whole barley grain that has undergone a high-temperature, short-time infrared heat treatment known as micronization. This process alters the starch structure of the grain, making it more gelatinized and improving its digestibility in the small intestine. Micronization also enhances palatability and reduces the risk of undigested starch reaching the hindgut.
In equine nutrition, micronized barley is used as an energy-dense cereal grain, offering a moderate level of protein and high levels of starch. Compared to raw or rolled barley, the micronized form is more suitable for horses due to improved starch availability and reduced risk of digestive upset. It is often included in pelleted or textured feeds designed for performance or weight gain.
Because of its high starch content, micronized barley should be fed in controlled amounts, especially in horses prone to metabolic conditions such as laminitis or insulin dysregulation.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Micronized Barley as an ingredient.
