Micronized Wheat - Feed Ingredient
Micronized wheat is whole wheat grain that has been subjected to a high-temperature, short-time infrared heat process known as micronization. This processing technique uses infrared radiation to rapidly heat the grain, which alters starch structure and improves digestibility while reducing anti-nutritional factors. The process also enhances palatability and feed handling characteristics.
In equine nutrition, micronized wheat is used as a high-starch energy source. The micronization process gelatinizes the starch, making it more digestible in the small intestine and reducing the risk of undigested starch reaching the hindgut, where it could disrupt microbial balance. Wheat provides a moderate level of protein and is low in fiber, so it is typically included in balanced grain mixes or concentrates rather than as a primary forage substitute.
Due to its high starch content, inclusion of micronized wheat should be managed carefully in horses prone to metabolic conditions such as laminitis or insulin dysregulation.
The following equine feeds, supplements and products contain Micronized Wheat as an ingredient.
